Summary: Dragon Naturally Speaking 9 fails to play back test
recording
Product: Wine
Version: CVS
Platform: Other
URL: http://nuance.com
OS/Version: other
Status: NEW
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-multimedia
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: dank(a)kegel.com
Today's git successfully installs Dragon Naturally Speaking 9.
To start it, I had to install Word Viewer 97 (to get docobj.dll),
and I had to do "winetricks fakeie6" (to get a fake iexplore.exe).
The app started up, if slowly, and recognized my microphone
without me touching winecfg. (That's gotta be a first.)
It even got past the first sound check, but when it wanted
to play back my voice, I got an infinite series of the following warnings
on the console:
err:mmio:MMIO_ParseExtA No . in szFileName: ""
err:mmio:MMIO_ParseExtA No . in szFileName: "C:\\Program
Files\\Nuance\\NaturallySpeaking9\\Program\\"

I can fairly easily replicate the lock-up with Wine version 0.9.36 when I enter
a situation in the game where there is too much going on the screen.

It seems that you are missing the whole point, namely that the fix
hasn't made it into the main source tree. Apart from the fact that
you are being a general pain in the ass in every way.

You know, if you morons would just FIX these bugs instead of dorking around
with Bugzilla and hassling people they wouldn't keep reporting them. It ain't
fixed until it is in the official release tree or whatever you call it. But
since you insist, I'll go repeat my pleas under 8033.

I am getting the following when jumping around in the menue's of Sturmovik:
fixme:alsa:ALSA_AddRingMessage two fast messages in the queue!!!! toget =
62(WINE_WM_RESETTING), tosave=1(UNKNOWN(0x00000000))
The game then hangs until I hit CTRL+C in the console where it was started ->
then I can go on as if nothing had happened (it does not crash!). Also I did not
notice any problems with sound itself.
It seems to only happen, when i choose my SB Live! 5.1 soundcard. Not with the
HDA Intel onboard. Can that be?
That's at least the behavior in 0.9.35. In 0.9.36 the game would crash at this
point.

Summary: Lords of the Realm 2 installer fails to complete
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.36.
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-misc
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: roothorick(a)new.rr.com
Lords 2 installer fails at 82% on file A2B_PEAS.PL8 with the message "An error
occurred during the data move process: -106". All copied files are deleted as
the installer exits. wine doesn't output anything useful on the console (then
again, I do not know what debug flags to enable).
If it makes a difference, my copy of the game is from the Lords Royal Collection
compilation, which includes Lords of the Realm (1), Lords of the Realm 2, and
the Lords 2 Siege Pack, each on its own disc.
You can copy the game out of the \Files\ directory of the disc, but the game
refuses to play as it does not recognize its own CD. I have resorted to running
the DOS version under another emulator (DOSEMU) for the time being.

The fix works for the two people who reported the problem.
Curious that the bug only hits people on dual core athlons.

It seems you don't understand what "duplicate" means. I think you need to start
from dictionary. Then do some RTFM:
DUPLICATE
The problem is a duplicate of an existing bug. Marking a bug duplicate
requires the bug# of the duplicating bug and will at least put that bug number
in the description field.
If you still don't get it - this bug is _the same exact problem_ reported on bug
8033. Unless you blind or your hyperlinks don't work, that bug 8033 is _NOT_
closed. If you still not convinced here is some status cut & paste from that bug

resolved until I have to stop adding this two line hack

It works fine here (with wine-git dated of 2007-05-09).
It may be a bug in the ATI driver, since I use a Nvidia card.
Moreover, when you report a bug, you should report with builtin dll only.

shell32.dll ordinal 755 is PathIsEqualOrSubFolder() - a rather undocumented
one.
I googled a bit and found that one implementation was introduced to wine dev
mailing list some time ago and got rejected because it was not
implemented/working correctly.
The ReactOS one isnt right either (people havent found out yet i guess) :-)
What both implementations did not account for is the fact, that the first
parameter can actually be both - a pointer or an index.
This dirty trick is the same brain damaged mechanism like SendMessage's LPARAM
(string pointer vs. integer index)
After adding an implementation based on shell32 trace it goes a lot further.
It finally shows the file dialog using native common dialog controls :)
They look a bit different, probably due to wine stubs but well (good test case
for other wine components/subsystems).

Ok, i thought "this is it" - until i double clicked an item :(
Crashes on unimplemented "SHCreateShellItem()".
I added a minimal stub for this, which actually does nothing but E_FAIL :)
(dont use -noname for that export on .spec file, it must be visible!)
Now it seems to work. One can walk folder structure and click/open items.
Beware if you walk up to root directory which contains "net"/"network" folder,
it takes some time to refresh then.
It seems that using native comdlg32 is a good test case for wine shell32
module/API.
(To get an impression what might be missing/required).
Use WINEDEBUG=+shell and see what i mean.
Attached is a sample implementation of all the stuff bespoken here.
The file/folder browser dialog stuff doesnt crash anymore with that patch
applied.
Use it for your convenience.

I found an interesting bit of information when monitoring War3 CPU usage:
When War3 is iconified, it uses 100% CPU.
When I sample War3's CPU usage when the game is visible, it's 20% usage on my
Athlon XP 2600+. Max gfx settings. That's pretty nice for a (old) game.
So really the reading seems to be invalid. Nothing I can tell is really a
problem here.

Ok what seems to happen is when you install wine the
/home/user/.wine/drive_c/windows/fonts is empty.
When you copy a new TTF file into this directory wine uses this file as font to
print any messagebox. If you copy a new one in there wine SOMETIMES changes to
the new font or SOMETIMES stick to the old one. It seems to arbitrary. . .
The sollution so far is to delete every file in the directory so wine uses the
default one. . .

What you need to do and what the original reporter needed to do was prove that
running at 100% is a symptom of a problem you are having. Neither of you have
actually described a problem. Likewise you need to prove it is not caused by a
configuration of your computer or distro. Lastly, for anything like this to
really be looked at, we would need profiling information to see what's sucking
up CPU time. Having 100% CPU itself is not indicative of a problem. And with the
variety of scheduler configurations, it could be actually valid operation under
linux.

I recognized that this does not happen under windows and with other Linux OpenGL
games. (with vsync enabled)
The problem is, that some CPUs, e.g. mobile ones, use the cpu usage for
controlling their clock or the fan speed. So this IS a problem.
I tried BillardGL's windows version with wine, and it does not use 100% cpu with
opengl. So i think this must be a wine+warcraft bug.
Even if it isn't a problem, there is still something wrong, isn't it? Because it
should not use 100% CPU: afaik the graphic driver is waiting when swapping the
buffers with vsync enabled. Maybe there's another thread using 100%? I'm new to
linux+wine so i don't know how to find out.

Yes, thank you, I will mark this as invalid and file separate bugs for each
issue, complete with terminal output log attachments. I reported 0.9.31 for this
particular application because that was the last version of Wine I had used when
testing this application, whereas the others I had recently re-tested with
0.9.36. I was going through my previous AppDB feedback submissions and trying to
file a bug for all entries marked as "Garbage" as instructed. When I file
separate bugs for each issue for this app I will try again with newest Wine.

Vitaliy Margolen,
I enabled virtual desktop and reinstalled with success, thank you! I am closing
this bug since installation works with this option, I will include this in my
new testing feedback for this application @ AppDB.
Unrelated to this bug but for a followup, once I run the started application,
the result (log attached) occurs on terminal.

I'm about to try it now, should the attempt fail I'll attach another terminal

"Did you removed your ~/.wine directory before installing this program?"
Yes, thank you
"Also killall wineserver - really really bad idea."
Thank you, when an application hangs and/or locks up my desktop, what command
should I use instead?

"Please do not uninstall/reinstall applications under Wine! Remove ~/.wine
directory instead _ever time you test new program_!"
Thank you for this kind advice, I appreciate the help. Yes, when I test an
application it is always with a fresh ~/.wine directory so results are not skewed.
"This is just one more reason why all your bugs being marked as invalid."
One more reason? What were the others? Actually, not all my bugs are being
marked as invalid, only those which had no terminal output when ran.

Now the date string shall be converted to date using current locale, which is
system default, sublang eng -> 0x409 on my system.
When the date string is parsed, the delimiters are being taken as DP_TIMESEP
type flags.
After parsing it tries to fill system time struct data by evaluating parsed date
struct data/flags.
It encounters inconsistency (because the parse data doesnt match expected time
fields) therefore DISP_E_TYPEMISMATCH is returned.
Now one can argue if we set locale to german (LANG/LC_TYPE to de_DE) this might
work. No it does not.
VarDateFromStr() doesnt take locale into account when processing date/time
delimiters - they are hard coded.
Compare delimiters:
Locale Common format Long format Short format
----------------------------------------------------------------------
United States English 05/09/07 April 9, 2007 05/09/07
German 9.5.07 9. April 2007 09.05.07
With locale set to en_EN this error is acceptable, because the application used
hard coded date format string on wrong locale.
With locale set to de_DE this is a wine problem/bug, because "." is a valid date
delimiter.
Regards

Hello,
--- quote ---
I tried to pass some extra commandline arguments as wel, but didn't make any
difference, and there's no mention that the app needs commandline arguments.
Maybe another case of copy protection?
--- quote ---
Yep. It is protected by ActiveMark v6.x (Macrovision).
Interesting software protection, faciliating many latest generation
anti-debugging/reversing stuff.
It currently dies due to insufficiency of advapi32 service API.
EnumServicesStatusExA() is currently a mere stub.
While trying to check for (in)famous kernel debuggers (and extensions) it derefs
NULL data.
You already noticed few trace output.
This is because the protector messes with API entry points (skipping first
instructions) thus interfering with wine's relay feature.
Though this works - with the side effect that you dont see some calls in trace
that are actually made. :-)

I understand perfectly well what the system time is. I know that it doesn't
start from a fixed date and that it wraps every 49.71 days. What you don't seem
to understand is that your joystick times are in a different time frame than
Wine's system time. You can call GetTickCount() and get 20000, then read a
joystick event that says it happened at 80000000, then call GetTickCount() again
and get 21000. That is clearly wrong. The timestamp is supposed to be the
"System time at which the input event was generated, in milliseconds", not the
system time plus some random offset.
If you don't believe that is how it's supposed to work, look at Quake 3's source
code. You will see DirectInput timestamps used exactly as I described.
(Luckily they only use DirectInput to read the mouse, not the joystick, so they
don't hit the bug.)
Anyway, I am done wasting time on this. Do what you will.

Sorry I could not query the bug-tracker if already an entry for this problem
exists. When I tried to search the bugtracker with the keyword "BadPixmap" an
PHP error was displayed.
The bug is reproducable, but I think it would take me a lot of time to make a
standalone example exe-file to demonstrate the problem.
Of course I would do that if some one needs it. (just ask but)
Here is the error message:

You mean you removed ~./wine dir and installed it again? From where? With what
command?
> Commands: "wine RelicCOH.exe -minvidmem 0"
> &"wine RelicCOH.exe"
You ran that in what directory? Those _exact_ commands would give you an arror
if you run them as-is. The reason I emphasized _exact_ is that I need to see the
command, including current patch _exactly_ as it appears in your terminal. Don't
add anything to it. Don't alter paths, parameters, etc. The best would be if you
can cut and paste the content of the terminal into a text file and attach it here.
It seems the program either didn't install properly or is not being ran the way
it should be.

If you didn't understood this is a not guaranteed behavior. You can not relay on
this to be what you using it as.
In _all_ input functions windows does use time-ticks in one way or the other.
However you CAN NOT relay on their starting point! Also you are missing the fact
that GetTickCount returns 32-bit number that will roll over after approximately
50 days.
Anyway, if this is your own program, you better change it. If it's the program
you bought, you better file a bug with their developers.

Of course, I still have no idea why setting the soft stack limit higher broke
things :) (Umm, comment #6 was doing from a vanilla bash shell outside of make;
I should have specified that clearer, sorry.)
For what it's worth, wine can certainly use large amounts of memory just fine.
(Running the MSVC linker trying to build Mozilla Firefox does that... sigh.)
Also, yes, I am running a local workaround that sets stack size before trying to
run wine; that helps me, but doesn't exactly fix wine :)

I made a workaround for my app, but the bad timestamps will break apps that
depend on them. Say you have a simulation that can only render at 10hz, but
runs its physics at 100hz. Every 100ms it will run 10 physics steps. For the
first step, it will only consider joystick events that happened before
timeGetTime()-90ms, for the next step it will consider events before
timeGetTime()-80ms and so on. With the timestamps as they are now, an app that
works like that will end up ignoring joystick events because the timestamp says
the event hasn't happened yet.
To get it right wine has to record the GetTickCount() time when the joystick is
opened and the timestamp from the linux joystick's JS_EVENT_INIT and then
subtract the difference between the two from each subsequent joystick event
timestamp.
If that is too much trouble, it would probably be better to ignore the linux
joystick timestamps entirely and just use the current time. At least it won't
be off by days then.

http://suomi.homelinux.net/wordpress/?p=27 says
that Visual Studio 6 works fine if you have
native msvcrt. So I fired up Visual Studio 6
on a large C++ project here at work (after doing
winetricks vcrun6, which is required to get mfc dlls)
and sure enough, with the builtin msvcrt, I got lots of errors
of the form
err:msvcrt:symbol_demangle Unknown operator: _R
on wine's console, and lots of lines of the form
... : fatal error C1033: cannot open program database 'z:\data\dkegel\foo\vc60.pdb'
plus one internal compiler error on the msdev console.
Setting msvcrt to native solved these problems, and
the huge project is now happily building away...

I received the INI files generated under windows, see attachments.
They are not identical to the wine-generated (see attachment #5766)
Empty key strings are present, as in:
[section]
=value
But empty sections seem to be written differently in the INI file between
wine and windows.
Wine does not put anything at all, while the windows-generated INI marks
the empty section with
[]
I am not sure about how to proceed from here,
my only idea currently is to try a version of the patch without the
part about empty sections, and with your help determine if the
tests run correctly under windows, so we at least get one part out of
the equation. Wdyt?

Microsoft's docs say this: "The system time returned in dwTimeStamp comes from
the same clock used by the Microsoft Win32GetTickCount or timeGetTime functions,
but it produces potentially more precise values. For example, on Microsoft
Windows 95, the GetTickCount timer is updated only every 55 milliseconds, but
the dwTimeStamp value is accurate to within 1 millisecond. Therefore, if you
call GetTickCount and it returns n, and you then receive an event with a
timestamp of n + n1, you cannot assume that the event took place exactly n1
milliseconds after the call to GetTickCount."
Your timestamps differ from GetTickCount by my system uptime. GetTickCount will
say something like 20000 milliseconds and the joystick timestamp will be
80000000. You aren't off by 55 milliseconds, you are giving timestamps that are
a day into the future.

strange for applications to fail with out any output.

then crashes with Unhandled Page fault.
I tried to pass some extra commandline arguments as wel, but didn't make any
difference, and there's no mention that the app needs commandline arguments.
Maybe another case of copy protection?

Oh, I have looked through the app's source
(http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/xboard/xboard-4.2.7.tar.gz) and not seen any attempts to
set a default or maximum character limit.
I would say that default of 32767 probably isn't correct, or that the control
itself doesn't respect whatever the limit is and instead uses 32767.
Since I had the source, I sent an EM_EXLIMITTEXT with 0 and 100000 to see if
that made a difference during initialization, it didn't.

To duplicate this problem, the patch for bug 8314 must be comitted, which it
supposedly is as of today.
Install and run winboard from a fresh wine config. Choose "Use an Internet
Chess Server", and select the 2nd item in the dropdown listbox:
freechess.org /icsport=5000 /icshelper=timeseal
Timeseal is unnessary, so if there is a problem (shouldn't be), then manually
edit out the last option: /icshelper=timeseal
If the app crashes when you click ok, then the patch for bug 8314 is not being used.
when prompted for a login, enter 'guest', and you should get lots of info and be
staring at a prompt: fics$
issue the command "games" a few times. depending on the number of players, just
once may be all that is required before the 32767 limit is reached.
Once reached, the window is effectively useless. You can still enter the "quit"
command to exit, (or any other command, for that matter), but the output window
will not accept more data.
This problem is also present in the application BabasChess.
http://www.babaschess.net/download/ZipBabasChess_3_6.zip
And, I suspect any other application using a richedit for console output, eg.
irc clients, telnet, etc. will suffer similarly.
Using native riched20.dll makes it go away, so it's definately a richedit problem.

Briareos,
gethostbyname(gethostname()) under windows will return a list of IPs of all
network devices in windows, with the device added last on top. Wine just uses
the os's implementation of gethostbyname(), so it'll just read your /etc/hosts
file under linux
Multiple "interfaces" may or may not show up in windows programs running under
wine, depending on how your linux distro is set up.
Applications running under wine may rely on the list of ips returned from
gethostbyname() to create dialogs like that.
It'd be nice if there was a way to get how long interfaces have been up for...

This is interesting. Do you get the selection option in wine?
As to your suggestions.. The windows way of determining the "primary nic", as
you called it is by keeping a stack of interfaces/addresses, and always
returning the top address. We didn't really have any good ideas to really
implement that in Wine.
However, the windows way of handling this means that for most use cases, other
games work fine on Windows, so it's unlikely that anyone will bother fixing it.
Dylan's patch cheats by giving out a list of interfaces in order of the user's
preference, which is as close as we can get to Windows behavior right now.
Thus, unless there's something else going wrong with IL-2, I think it's still a
dup of bug 7929

Hello,
the partial context fix will probably affect a whole bunch of bug reports (i
pre-tested some, no side effects).
If committed to GIT i can drop this one out of my private set of patches (every
time i update from GIT).
To prevent confusion you should improve the "FIXME" message.
If people dont know the current implementation, they might assume that
"__wine_call_from_32_restore_regs( context )" is never made due to that console
message.
e.g. change
--- snip ---
FIXME( "setting partial context (%x) not supported\n", flags );
--- snip ---
to something like:
--- snip ---
FIXME( "setting partial context (%x) not supported, using full context
instead\n", flags );
--- snip ---
Regards

> If an application doesn't run/work and displays no text at terminal,
>how do I report the bug for that application?
Just describe what happens: does it hang, or does it just return to the console
immediately etc. A few things you could always try is run in a virtual desktop,
and change windows version in winecfg to win98 /winxp. Maybe things change.
>What makes them invalid?
I dunno why they are marked invalid. I'll reopen them for now
