The Empire Earth 2 demo uninstaller asks you for confirmation when you select
the "Remove" option. The problem is that confirmation dialog appears hidden, is
not brought to top and then you cannot see it. You cannot either move the main
wine window once the dialog box has appeared, and you cannot close the
application, even with 'kill -9' the screen remains there. You need to restart
gdm in order to close the window.

OK, thanks to many repeated tips from A.F.,
I now understand the workaround, and have implemented it in winetricks.
Try
wget http://kegel.com/winetricks
sh winetricks vcrun2005
That should both install msvcr80 and make the
registry change needed for that library to
be found in the proper location instead of system32.
This seems to get around that bad dialog box.
I see also that real sxs support patches are starting to
be posted (http://www.winehq.org/pipermail/wine-patches/2007-April/038672.html )
Once that series is complete and merged, I can remove
this crufty workaround from winetricks.

You shouldn't attach the registry files with .reg extension. You also
shouldn't post the _entire_ wine registry, as you have done. Since you have
already posted the reg files with .reg extension though, dont bother reposting
with .txt unless/until you need to post an updated one (such as making sure
you only export the scsi branch of the wine registry).

I just installed Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn on my machine and would like to run the
program DVB Recorder to run my Nokia D-box with DVB2000 and grab TV. The D-box
is connected via a Adaptec 2940U PCI SCSI card.
The LINUX system has found it:
root@amd:/media/Daten/Programme/DVBRecorder# scsiadd -p
Attached devices:
Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 06 Lun: 00
Vendor: DVB2000 Model: Nokia rulez Rev: 2.21
Type: Communications ANSI SCSI revision: 02
Host: scsi1 Channel: 00 Id: 00 Lun: 00
Vendor: ATA Model: SAMSUNG SP1614C Rev: SW10
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 05
But DVB Recorder can't find the SCSI device.
I checked with 'wine regedit' and the device is missing.
I have attached the registry branch of Wine, of WindowsXP on the same machine
and the termilan output when I start dvbrecorder with 'wine dvbrecorder.exe'.
The problem is identical in both, the 0.9.33 wine from Ubuntu repositories and
the newest 0.9.36 version from your servers.
Please let me know when I can help or something is missing.
Thank you very much in advance.

I tested Office 2000 with Wine-0.9.36. I noticed that when I open any toplevel
menu and switch to another application or just move the Office window a littel
bit, the menu "detaches" from the Office window.
This detached menu is really in the users way, because it stays on top of all
other desktop applications.
I will attach a screenshot of this "detached" menu...

I tested Wine-0.9.36 with Office 2000 (German) and the spinners are back! Just
open "Datei -> Seite einrichten..." (in English something like "File -> Setup
page...") and take a look at the dialog. I will attach a screenshot...

Hi, you could always attach last part of the log of course, if it's too big.
Anyway, i gave this thing a try, and it starts fine on a fresh .wine, however
without any text on buttons.
So i copied arial.ttf to the fonts directory, and now i get the same crash as
you had. So appears to be a font-related problem. In the log, there's a call to
GetGlyphOutlineA just before the crash. Might be related. I'll attach last part
of log.

Downloading compiled wine-0.9.36 will work better. And using Bugzilla for bugs
_ONLY_ will be even better still!

Kent, thanks for the data.
But two favors, please:
1) never run applications as root. Never. It bypasses system security
and could endanger your system's health.
2) Don't paste logs into bug reports. Our enforcer, Vito,
will come after your kneecaps if he catches you doing it again :-)
The preferred way is to attach the log as an, um, attachment.
(You can paste five or so key lines if you know what you're
doing.)

What video card do you have? What drivers?
You can't just disable vertex shaders and expect anything to work. You forcing
HL2 into what's called dxlevel 60 mode - which is buggy and doesn't work.
What if you force it into dxlevel 70? When HL2 stars, open console and type
"mat_dxlevel 70" and hit enter.

Anastasius, have I told you lately how much you rock? :-)
The patch works for me. (I see
fixme:module:LdrGetDllHandle Unknown behavior, please report
in the log, guess I'll file another bug...)
And ps7 tryout text tool can't find a default system font,
I'll file that one, too. But it runs!

I can confirm this.
There's a workaround though: enabling the "Allow pixel shader" option under
Direct3d configuration (in winecfg) solves it, but the game becomes a lot slower..

Summary: Msi error during Call of Duty 2 Install
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.35.
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: major
Priority: P2
Component: wine-misc
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: stfan4cjk(a)gmail.com
About 2 percent through the Call of Duty 2 install with the 6 cd set, a "Feature
Transfer Error" pops up saying
Error: -1603 Fatal error during installation
Consult Windows installer Help (Msi.chm) or MSDN for more information.
I am not able to install Call of Duty 2 because of this error. The installer
just hangs there after I exit the error and I have to restart the X server to
get rid of it. I have attached a msi.log so that someone can try to fix this error.
The log was zipped with rzip to make it smaller in case anyone is wondering how
to unzip it.

Yeah, that should be ok. I wonder why I got more play out of it than you did?
Some time tonight I'll try again to confirm my results and come up with a +font
trace. I'm starting to think that this might be some kind of stack/memory
corruption problem. But that's just a preliminary guess. Just an off thing: how
much RAM do you have?

I reproduced this today with the Photoshop 7 trial downloaded from
fileplanet (name adobeps7tryout.exe, size 170250439, md5sum
cb61d85fceb56e212b89db4502c34ce8).

I downloaded and verified this too for sake of completeness.
With my proposed fix for advapi32.SetEntriesInAclA() (comment #10) the trial
version installs and runs cleanly.

and the patch in attachment id 5954 from comment #17 solves it in 0.9.36, at

Hello,
i might shed some light on this issue :)
While hunting down another bug, i downloaded Framemaker 7.1 from Adobe.
This application is protected by vbox 2.4.x so probably same issue as here.
Well, the error messages popping up at startup of adobe applications result from
an incomplete/corrupted vbox installation.
The vbox installer is called "VSetupT.exe" and contained within main app setup.
It gets executed as post install step.
Due to a failure, only license files get generated and copied (usually into
"c:\program files\common files\vbox\Licenses").
Most of vbox supplementary directories there are empty, vbox client/agent dlls
missing.
The following trace extract nails the problem down:
--- snip post-setup installation step ---

...
--- snip post-setup installation step ---
Due to advapi32.SetEntriesInAclA() returning ERROR_CALL_NOT_IMPLEMENTED the
installer silently fails install and exits without error.
I tested this on the fly in while running the installer in debugger by patching
SetEntriesInAclA() returning ERROR_SUCCESS in every case.
All following setup steps were executed successfully and the vbox client/agent
dlls get copied too.
These files are necessary for vbox to work (in c:\Program Files\Common
Files\Vbox\Common\):
vboxat.dll vboxm.dll vboxr.dll vboxtb.dll vboxten-us.vboxlm
The application successfully starts up and displays 30-day trial dialog.
Looking at advapi32.SetEntriesInAclW() I see someone already "fixed" it to
return "OK" in all cases - but missed the ANSI version.
To get adobe vbox installations right, apply the following patch:
--- snip dlls/advapi32/security.c ---
DWORD WINAPI SetEntriesInAclA( ULONG count, PEXPLICIT_ACCESSA pEntries,
PACL OldAcl, PACL* NewAcl )
{
FIXME("%d %p %p %p\n",count,pEntries,OldAcl,NewAcl);
*NewAcl = NULL;
return ERROR_SUCCESS;
}
--- snip dlls/advapi32/security.c ---
This recipe applies to all adobe vbox protected installations.
Be aware that newer installation/demos from adobe DO NOT use vbox software
protection anymore (SafeCast 3.x now)
Regards

Not really any different, except the lp value in the WM_PARENTNOTIFY msg
is different. I'm not clear on what the lp value is, so I can't comment.
Looking at the offending patch, I can't see anything jumping out - we seem to
get the same basic messages before and after.
Any experiments you would like me to try and I'll happily give them a go.

Thanks for the tips.
I tried again, this time replacing HL2DM with CSD, CS, CSTRIKE and CSLOGO (the
names of all the .ttf files in the counter-strike source resource folder).
Sadly this didn't make any difference (a crash in the second round twice), so I
didn't seem to get the extended play that you did.
By the way - I added those four by just repeating the entire bit of code that
Phil posted four times - is this correct?

Luke: I tried the fix last night, and it did seem to have a very noticeable
effect on HL2DM, but not on CS:S. I was able to play for a good half-hour (no
crashes, I just stopped playing.) I think these problems are slightly different,
but closely related. If you look in your steam folder, you'll find the fonts in
question in conunter-strike: source/cstrike/resource and for HL2DM half-life 2
deathmatch/hl2mp/resource. CS uses a whole set of different fonts for its
decals, such as cs.ttf, csd.ttf, and cslogo.ttf, to name a few. I tried adding
these font families (they're the same as the filename without the .ttf) to the
if statement in the patch, and while it seemed to last longer (I could get a
solid 10 rounds out of de_dust2) it didn't totally fix the issue.
On a related note, I did notice that when CS crashes, it complains about the
fonts I mentioned above before the debugger tries to start (it never does, don't
know what's up with that.) I'll reproduce and see if I can post these errors and
maybe even a trace to help us nail this one.

Hello,
the application employs SafeCast 3.x software protection (basically it's
SafeDisc without Media).
Framemaker starts Adobe License Manager Service which waits for client to connect.
The client crashes immediately leaving the service live locking with one of it's
server threads in WaitForSingle/Multiple loop with short timeout eating all CPU.
You can simulate this by starting the service first by hand (using some NT
service tool):
$ WINEDEBUG=+tid,+seh,+sync wine sc.exe start "Adobe LM Service"
...
and then start framemaker itself.
Both will crash then.
The service itself can't be attached by debugger due to protection (at least by
conventional means).
The Client (Framemaker) employs various anti debugging measures
(IsDebuggerPresent, ZwQueryInformationProcess, encrypted IAT, emulated opcodes
and the like) effectely preventing easy reverse engineering
It could be a wine API bug or just problematic anti debugging stuff which causes
this.
With more time investment it could be tracked down (by removing various
protection measures first to see if it's a wine API or anti debug issue), but i
dont see the value to get this type of software protection to work, speak
"support" it.

I saw a user asking about Framemaker 7.1 support
( http://groups.google.com/group/bit.listserv.techwr-l/msg/7d3aa82797d761cc ),
but all I could download from Adobe's site was Framemaker 7.2,
so I tried that.
Framemaker 7.2 trial installs fine but crashes quickly on
startup. After the crash, a service "Adobelmsvc.exe"
is running and chewing up all CPU time.

At the time, the problem was consistent across 7.0 and 7.1. I'd assume that 7.2
is a good proxy.
I'm not sure how relevant it is, but it now works under the Codeweavers builds.

As an easiest workaround probably the code removed from GetFileSecurity could
be moved to NtQuerySecurityObject to replace existing code.
But since NtSetSecurityObject is implemented, NtQuerySecurityObject should be
properly implemented as well.

Hello,
the error message with missing file name part is nice .. sloppy devs :)
It's due to GetShortPathNameA() with a path containing a symlink failing.

"warn:file:check_dir_symlink suppressing dir symlink" is the culprit.
To temporarily work around this, use the standard path without symlink.
E.g. if your "My Documents" directory symmlinks to "/home/<username", browse to
"/home/<username>" and create/open the file there.

As workaround i currently force the debugger to use native version and let the
debuggee use the builtin one (if needed).
How about automating the "compliance" testing between Micro$oft undname and
wine's version?
E.g. a little tool which loads both, the builtin version and the native one by
late binding (LoadLibrary/GetProcAddress), feeds both with same input and
compare the outputs against each other?
Dll names should be supplied on command line to get different msvcrt versions
tested.
Throw large quantities of binaries (.exe, .dlls) which export decorated symbols
at this tool.
E.g. a script which recursively scans filesystem, pick of any dll, dump exports,
pass it to both demangle calls and compare outputs.
Guard the demangle calls with SEH.
That way you get a much "real world" test cases than msvcrt cpp test.

Indeed. To get the app to load, all I need to do after the
winetricks command I gave above is set PATH to where the libraries
got installed in c:\windows\winsxs, e.g.
PATH=C:\windows\winsxs\x86_Microsoft.VC80.CRT_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.42_x-ww_0de06acd;C:\windows\winsxs\x86_Microsoft.VC80.MFC_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.42_x-ww_dec6ddd2;c:\windows\system32;c:\windows
then remove them from C:\windows\system32.
I guess I can update winetricks with this tomorrow morning so
nobody has to do it by hand.
The next problem with the app is the same as in bug 3221 comment 10
( http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3221#c10 ). That workaround
works here, too. The next problem is bug 7114. That, and it's real slow.

Hello,
if you install vc2005 runtime, make sure the CRT library NEVER gets loaded from
System32 directory.
It will check for this and terminate if so (the messagebox you see).
All other directories which are seen by loader are permitted (usually app
directory or winsxs).
Place the new CRT libraries along with manifest files there (as by download link
in bug 7409).
In this case msvcr80.dll and Microsoft.VC80.CRT.manifest are required.
Make sure the manifest (Microsoft.VC80.CRT.manifest) is either in directory
where the CRT dll resides or in c:\windows\winsxs.

Vitaliy, if you want to close the bug because it has a log pasted
in it, please give the user clear, polite directions.
But the right way to deal with this is probably to modify
bugzilla to automatically reject such submissions.
Maybe you should file a bug for that?
Ron, can you reproduce your bug with the downloadable trial version at
http://quicken.intuit.com/free-trial-download.jhtml ? That would really
help.
It's possible the DLLs you downloaded gave Wine indigestion.
When I tried this with the downloadable demo, I installed the
missing DLLs like this:
wget http://kegel.com/wine/winetricks
sh winetricks gdiplus vcrun2005
This downloads known good copies from Microsoft.com.
But the result I got was quite different: the app terminated
with a dialog box
"Runtime Error!
Program: C:\Program Files\Quicken\qw.exe
R6034
An application has made an attempt to load the C runtime library incorrectly.
Please contact the application's support team for more information."
This is not unexpected. Wine doesn't quite support applications
built with msvc2005 yet. I think what I saw is another example
of bug 7409.
Could you try again after renaming your .wine directory and
using winetricks as described above instead of downloading
the DLLs from wherever you got them? If you still have a problem
that's different that what I described above, file a new bug
(and this time attach the log, don't paste it inline).

Hello,
i read some discussion on developer list regarding this one ... so it catched my
interest :)
Fired up my debugger and let go (+few cups of coffee).
In short: it's an interesting (subtile) bug in wine trigged by unusual PE
section protection flags :)
First, the root cause is a c++ exception generated by precompiled boost::python
module which should not hurt at all.
When being passed to upper exception handler chains it finally arrives at a
point where the application tries to make sense of it.
That task is accomplished by a hooking library which exports several APIs to
gather process/module information, hook either by patching the import address
tables of all modules (1st level hooker) and/or to patch entrypoints of system
functions itself (2nd level hooker, trampolines).
The hooker enumerates all modules and their import tables.
It modifies the page protection attributes to get write access to the IAT of
each module.
This is done by a series of VirtualQuery/VirtualProtect.
To answer the question "lots of access violations being seen in debugger":
completely harmless and expected.
The code checks if page write access has already been enabled to system
functions code area by using IsBadWritePtr (2nd level hooking/trampoline).
Checks for trampolines code (e.g. insertion of jmp/call opcodes on entry) are
made too.
Well, back to topic.
One module "Blowfish.pyd" has a rather unusal protection attributes combination
to its .idata (imports) section: C0000040 -> readable | writable | initialized data.
Usually it should be: readable | initialized data .. i'm pretty sure it was on
accident by developers.
This triggers the interesting wine bug.
With the module being mapped by wine loader, the page gets PAGE_WRITECOPY attribute.
At one place, the hooker basically does following:
if( VirtualQuery( IAT_addr_of_module, &info, sizeof(info)) == sizeof(info))
{
DWORD prot = info.AllocationProtect & (PAGE_NOACCESS | PAGE_READWRITE |
PAGE_WRITECOPY | PAGE_EXECUTE | PAGE_EXECUTE_READWRITE | PAGE_EXECUTE_WRITECOPY);
prot |= PAGE_READWRITE;
if( VirtualProtect( IAT_addr_of_module, ... , prot, &oldProtect))
{
// access the IAT
}
}
Now the problem: VirtualQuery() -> info.AllocationProtect -> returns 0x8 =
PAGE_WRITECOPY for this specific module.
That gets masked and or'd PAGE_READWRITE: 0xC -> PAGE_WRITECOPY | PAGE_READWRITE
and the passed to VirtualProtect().
Guess. VirtualProtect() returns TRUE and the hooker tries to access IAT area.
*boom*
Now you have literally a "double fault" - the module which should gather
exception information produced exception by itself :)
You may ask where is the wine bug?
Well, wine should never have returned TRUE on VirtualProtect with PAGE_READWRITE
and PAGE_WRITECOPY flags both set.
This is a very little known (undocumented) limitation starting with Windows 2000
and higher.
I had this issue some years ago - that's why I remembered this one.
The mode attribues PAGE_READWRITE and PAGE_WRITECOPY are mutually exclusive.
You can test it by yourself on windows systems (Win2k, WinXp), VirtualProtect
will fail if both set.
For verification that my findings are correct you have to options:
- change the section protection of "Blowfish.pyd" .idata section to 0x40000040
(read | initialized data).
VirtualProtect will succeed and the app finally starts up with login screen.
- fix wine itself: VirtualProtect( PAGE_READWRITE | PAGE_WRITECOPY) on Win2K+
must return FALSE. PAGE_WRITECOPY is not supported by Win9X. Though I couldnt
verify NT4. I'd say: prohibit this combination at all.
Actually these are the bugs i like (along with stack smashers). I had some fun :)
Regards

Note that the font giving the problem is not a Truetype font, so is the
freetype version relevant? The program also installs two Truetype fonts which
work correctly under Wine.

HL2 Deathmatch crashes when you get hit by a physics object because
the "toilet-hitting-head" font is too big for the glyph memory. Stefan Dösinger gave
me a hack-around for this a few months back. (see end of post) This is not the exact
same issue as we have here, but it /will/ eliminate the HL2DM crashes and possibly
make the bug easier to spot. (Actually, the more I look at it, this looks to me like a
similar issue. Maybe it /is/ almost the same issue...
Try to see whether it crashes whenever the head-with-bullet icon should appear
(headshot). It can be any player, just so long as the headshot icon in the top right
tries to appear. I can't remember whether it worked or not here...
Anyway, for HL2DM:
in dlls/gdi32/freetype.c,
immediately after the line containing "BYTE *start, *ptr;"
add the following code
if(!strcmp(ft_face->family_name, "HL2MP"))
{
int i;
if(lpgm->gmBlackBoxX)
lpgm->gmBlackBoxX--;
for(i = 0; i < 2; i++)
{
if(lpgm->gmBlackBoxY)
{
lpgm->gmBlackBoxY--;
lpgm->gmptGlyphOrigin.y--;
}
}
}

Apparently, using native dbghelp gets past this crash point. So it is a problem
in dbghelp, although I could not find anything wrong looking at a trace from
builtin dbghelp.....

This start fine for me using native dbghelp.dll, so likely a bug in our builtin
dgnhelp. In case anyone wants to test, i created an account:
name->winehq;passwd->winehq

Summary: IL-2 Sturmovik (all versions) Most keys do not work in
the game
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.35.
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P3
Component: wine-misc
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: lays25(a)o2.pl
In IL2Sturmovik Forgotten Battles AEP some keys just won't work. Only several
work correctly, like F1-F6, the numpad ones and few others. Changing
configuration doesn't result positively as the keys just appear to be dead in
this game.

Sorry, I missed where you said you thought
this code isn't even getting invoked from windows.
I guess somebody's going to have to whip out a debugger like
you described to find out.

I have an NVIDIA Geforce 7800GT.
With the latest GIT, it seems to occur a LOT less now(at least for me). It still
does occur though(and seems to have the worst timing as well).

Had the same problem, did as suggested and moved MSVCR80.dll to the working
directory, I then had to download and install MSVCP80.dll to the system32
directory. Upon running Quicken I get the Quicken window appears but is in a
loop and get this output in console:

This bug is valid for Secret of Tunguska as well. Looks like the shadow
turns solid white.
See screenshot of Tunguska 1.02 This shadow bug does not exist in wine 0.9.15
for Tunguska.
