Summary: Counter-Strike 1.6: Start-up Menu does not show up
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.30.
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: critical
Priority: P2
Component: wine-directx-d3d
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: chris.r.walton(a)gmail.com
I'm on Kubuntu 6.10 running Wine 0.9.31.
I installed Steam as instructed on AppDB, then I downloaded Counter-Strike via
my Steam account. When launching the game, the Counter-Strike background loads,
and the mouse pointer shows. After a few seconds, the mouse pointer resets to
the center. I am able to move the mouse normally. However, the menu (usually in
the lower left corner) is not present. Moving the mouse over the spot does not
produce sounds, and clicking around does not do anything that could be done if a
menu item were to be clicked. I attempted to launch counterstrike with the
-console and -showconsole options, in hopes of getting a console, but that
didn't work either.
The console does not output anything once Counter-Strike itself is started (it
does print a bunch of stuff when Steam is started, though). I asked on the
Freenode IRC channel and nobody there had an idea either.
Thanks!

I, too have kept a folder of messages that crashed Notes. Yup, the latest Wine
runs Notes just fine for me, too, and happily displays all but one of the
problem messages (I think that last message, much more recent than the ones
mentioned here, indicates a different problem, which I'll report once I get some
handle on it).
And the icons that were blacked out on the Workspace tab now render properly;
looks like a lot got fixed between releases 0.9.21 and 0.9.31!
My warmest thanks to Dan and everyone else who took the time to verify and
isolate the bug, and to Dmitry for fixing it.

Hello,

(c48.17a4): C++ EH exception - code e06d7363 (first chance) <- huh?
--- snip ----
Looks fine to me.
"First chance exception" stuff should be considered harmless because it's part
of general application exception handling, e.g. C++ exceptions being thrown and
catched.
This is just information that an execption was thrown and is valid behavior for
a C++ program.
If you do not see an "unhandled exception" message immediately thereafter, the
exception was caught and handled.
The provided download link doesnt work (anymore)
Just send me the executable using my email.
Dont send the plain .exe - pack it before sending (.zip/.tar whatever).
Confidentiality is of course assured.

OK, this definitely overtakes me. As I expected in XP doesn't hang at all, even
running for a while under app verifier, both under version 2.0 included in the
XP sp2 CD, and under the last one available in the web, which required (or at
least suggested) me installing a debugger and which had a gui quite different
from the "howto".
Checking all tests under both app verifiers, then running the applications
standalone and furiously alt-tabbing and clicking everywhere inside its window
didn't get me anywhere; it doesn't hang at all.
In other ways, I've configured the debugger as suggested in the help (windbg -xd
av -xd ch -xd sov ApplicationCommandLine, then sxd av, sxd ch, sxd sov , then F5
to go), but it doesn't seem to scream at all and the program downloads and
alt-tabs flawlessly. I don't get nothing in the log from app verifier neither,
though I don't really know if I am using it properly. I guess it doesn't spawn
any exceptions so!
An eyecatching thing from the debugging log is:
ModLoad: 76980000 76a31000 C:\WINDOWS\system32\SXS.DLL
(c48.17a4): C++ EH exception - code e06d7363 (first chance) <- huh?

ModLoad: 76ea0000 76edc000 C:\WINDOWS\system32\RASAPI32.dll
after and before that is just complaining about symbols not installed, and the
remaining modloads. I can attach the log from debugger if relevant.
Nevertheless this is getting very time-consuming (and hard, though really
interesting =P) for me and I *really* have to work for the uni this week, so I
guess I'll leave this parked for now... Anyway I've uploaded the executable and
password-protected it on a zip to http://jisakiel.iespana.es/Downloader_2000.zip
. I'm not sure of the legality (though I am of it being legit, not always the
same), but as I didn't sign any EULA and I would be the only infringer of it,
feel free to try yourselves; I kindly ask anyone who uses it to 1. not denounce
me ;) and 2. delete anything downloaded by that program... Password is "winners".

restart it... but many time thge system need to be restarted otherwise the

>From what i've seen the windowproc pointer points to possible heap area

I remember some rare occurrences where WindowProc() might get called with
dangling pointer.
For instance when bugged code uses class libraries (like ATL, MFC and the like)
incorrectly by deleting window objects (like CWnd...) before calling
DestroyWindow().
There are cases where even class libraries contain such bugs (like the dreaded
"delete this" in OnFinalMessage() )
I would test this app using native windows. Wine isnt useful in this case.
Please run the software using "Windows Application Verifier"
(http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/windows/appcompatibility/appve…)
tool.
Here is a little "howto": http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms807121.aspx
If the software is bugged, the tool should report heap issues ("Page Heap")
prior to crash.
Report back if you encounter any problems or have new info.

Works for me. I just received Wine 0.9.31 on my Ubuntu system this morning and
after restarting Notes, I can troll through my "bugs" folder and see the
messages without a crash. Thanks!

Hello,
i modified script as follows:

#include <GUIConstants.au3>
$objShell = ObjCreate ("Shell.Application")
#Region ### START Koda GUI section ### Form=
...
-- snip ---
Compiled the script to exe.
Started debugger.
Placed breakpoints at OleInitialize() and OleUninitialize() imports.
Both breakpoints are hit only once (as it should) - the init and cleanup calls
are balanced.
Again: this is NOT a wine fault nor a critical bug.

guiddef.h is not a Wine only header, Platform SDK also provides it.

Summary: Result of widl -u includes WINE-only header
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.30.
Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-tools
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: kevin.kofler(a)chello.at
widl -u generates a *_i.c file which includes the header <guiddef.h>. That
header doesn't exist in MinGW nor in Visual C++. It should include
<initguid.h> instead.
Moreover, INITGUID should be defined _before_ including the first RPC header,
you get a warning from MinGW about initialized variables declared "extern"
otherwise, because the MinGW initguid.h contains this:
#define DEFINE_GUID(n,l,w1,w2,b1,b2,b3,b4,b5,b6,b7,b8) GUID_EXT const GUID n
GUID_SECT = {l,w1,w2,{b1,b2,b3,b4,b5,b6,b7,b8}}
where GUID_EXT is defined by the MinGW RPC headers, to "extern" if INITGUID is
not defined, and to nothing if it is. (I haven't tested how Visual C++ reacts
to this one, but I assume defining INITGUID right away is the right thing
there too.)
To sum up, the generated *_i.c starts like this:
/*** Autogenerated by WIDL 0.9.31 from oleaut.idl - Do not edit ***/
#include <rpc.h>
#include <rpcndr.h>
#define INITGUID
#include <guiddef.h>
It should start like this instead:
/*** Autogenerated by WIDL 0.9.31 from oleaut.idl - Do not edit ***/
#define INITGUID
#include <rpc.h>
#include <rpcndr.h>
#include <initguid.h>
(This is with WINE 0.9.31 on FC6. The version isn't listed in Bugzilla yet.)

In Vector NTI, if you are using builtin comctl32 and you hit open and then click
on the "Remote Sources" tab it causes a page fault on read access to 0x000000000
in mfc71. With native comctl32 this bug does not occur (the switching to this
tab clears the listview, hence why I think it is listview; also, since native
comctl32 fixes this problem it is definitely a comctl32 problem of some sort).

New (hope this time relevant) tail
OK, though I'm trying the splitdebug thing in gentoo which should make possible
to debug without including all the stripped symbols in the output... By now I
just untarred the 0.9.31 (as I noticed it is new, wanted to try if it might
have been fixed AND my previous outputs were not useful at all) under ~,
./configured as default with CFLAGS="-ggdb3 -O0 -pipe -fno-strict-aliasing" and
run the binary.
Previous I:\ path didn't work because of some problem with the paths which I
bet has to do with the old 0.9.30 config still functioning, but the program
still works downloading under C:\temp with same results. This time I see
function parameters on those lines, thanks for pointing out what to look for
^^, and hope they are useful now... As before, it seems to hang only when I
change to another window and then back, and I don't think that *every* single
time that I do it, as I seem to recall some alt-tabs to firefox that worked
before the crash... I have opened only firefox, gnome listen and gaim under
2.6.16.
By the way, I didn't run that msdn downloader the previous comment suggested,
but from the look of screenshots from google images I'd say that the thing I'm

Crap... There indeed seems to be something causing a crash here on my side now.
I noticed I do have posted a completed result for that latest test earlier,
although with an earlier version of Wine and core and several other differences.
I ran several of the earlier tests again, and they all keep failing now, so
there must be something wrong with my current system.
I just have no clue what that might be. I just wonder how I can find out the
reason.
Sorry for the hassle. :(

Well, the installer crash in comment 18 was my own fault, caused by deleting my
registry.
Running wineprefixcreate fixed it.

I just compiled 0.9.31 and tried it again. The crash is gone now. :-) The app
however still doesn't work. The Blt() call always comes back with error
DDERR_INVALIDRECT. The debug channel says
"Application gave us bad destination rectangle for Blt without a clipper set."
which is a bit misleading now as the code for the check is
if ((/*This->clipper == NULL*/ TRUE) && [...]
Any idea why?

I am now 100% confident that the failure to install all files with Wine's
built-in MSI is due to the inability to run the JScript script ExpandFeatList.
Simple test for this is as follows:
1. wineprefixcreate
2. Install IE6 from Microsoft (installs cleanly when in Win2k mode which is wine
default, IE6 needed by MDAC and also conveniently installs MS Scripting)
3. Switch to win98 mode and install native MSI as described in instructions on wiki.
4. Now download the Vector NTI installer indicated by the above URL.
5. Let it get to the part where it starts installing its required Microsoft
components, and asks you to reboot itself.
6. Before pressing ok, remove jscript.dll from
.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/jscript.dll and also from
.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/dllcache/jscript.dll (at this point the
OrderAction6 script has already been run and won't be run again).
7. Now press ok and keep on going with the installation. Eventually it will give
you a popup "Internal Error 2739. ExpandFeatList"
8. Now _don't click ok_ as this will uninstall everything, go to
.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Invitrogen and look at the files there. They
_exactly_ match the files installed by Wine's MSI which ignores the
ExpandFeatList JScript script.
Hope this helps.

Just compile Wine in the conventional way and don't even install it.
Just run it directly from the build dir with the full path:
/path/to/source/dir/wine setup.exe &> /tmp/file.log
And I'm talking about these lines:
2 0x7ee7cdbf WINPROC_wrapper+0x79b() in user32 (0x0034ddf8)
3 0x7ee8303e CallWindowProcW+0x66() in user32 (0x0034de38)
They should show function parameter names, values and line lumbers.

OK, from what I seem to understand from the debugging, the backtrace starts in
some address not available, even on the second one which is the one I did with
-ggdb, which should* be equivalent to -g.
88 0x7edc6f61 in user32 (+0x6f61) (0x0045e220)
89 0x0000c030 (0x00010028)
90 0x00000000 (0x00000000)
0x7d32734e: -- no code accessible --
And the same on the last one. So I guess to see where it explodes I should not
strip binaries in my whole system... Should you guys allow me to find a more
convenient way to do it than recompiling the whole system, I'd be infinitely
grateful for the patience invested... First time I report something like this,
you know. I just found http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/qa/backtraces.xml, which
suggest adding a "nostrip" flag, and I guess recompiling the relevant packages ,
which I hope to be wine and its inmediate list of dependences (though that can
take a while).
So again, thanks for the patience to this n00b and the pointers on how to
report... I'll try to get a debugging output without that dreaded "no code
accessible" line and report as soon as I can.

I did not attach a separate file of the terminal output, because I cannot get
one. The computer crashes completely at the bug, and responds to nothing
thereafter. It doesn't help to run the test in winedbg either. I can see the
output on the crashed terminal, though, and that's how I manage to copy it
manually. But all there is, is 14 times
fixme:msvcrt:MSVCRT_sopen : pmode 0x01b6 ignored
then
ALSA lib seq_hw.c:456:(snd_seq_hv_open) open /dev/snd/seq failed: No such file
or directory
And the conformance test crashes while extracting tests for 'dsounds'. Knowing
the test was working fine before winetest-200701071000-paul-mingw.exe, and the
only patch affecting 'dsounds' in that version is the above mentioned patch.
I assume I did find the cause as explained above, but I don't feel confident
enough to make a patch of it. So, could someone check it and make the fix, please?

Summary: Regression with Word viewer installer
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.30.
Platform: Other
OS/Version: other
Status: NEW
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-msi
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: myasar(a)free.fr
I've found an old regression with MS Word viewer 2003 installer.
(you can get it from:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=95e24c87-8732-48d5…).
With Wine version 0.9.16 the installation is almost OK.
The files are copied, the installer displays an error after installation but
WordViewer is usable.
Since Wine v0.9.17 (and all version until 0.9.31) the installation stops before
copying any files.
With git bisect, I have found that the following patch has caused the regression :
commit 7c35db000b26852fc2bf4a7a7e349953f60d183f
msiexec: Use CommandLineToArgvW instead of process_args to reduce code duplication.
The patch replaces the function process_args() by CommandLineToArgvW() in
msiexec.c, the result is that the decodification of the command line is different.
(Note that I have pasted here the output of multiple runs, each time the name of
the temporary file is different)
Original command line :

DO NOT strip binaries!!! Your backtraces are useless!
And PLEASE look at your output yourself first! What you keep attaching is
useless. It doesn't tell anything.
Add at least "+message" to the WINEDEBUG as well.
No need for CXXFLAGS - wine has no c++ code

disassembly of app crash code
Hello again,
that was a quick one (as usual).
Looking at exception address (.text:004DAE48) it seems a NULL pointer is
dereferenced after SDL api "SDL_ListModes" call.
SDL_ListModes() is supposed to return an array of supported video modes.
It tries two times but fails (one with hardware surface flags the other one
software modes).
The software itself should check the return value of api calls before blindly
dereferencing it.
---- pseudo code ----
SDL_Rect **modes = SDL_ListModes (NULL, requested_mode_flags_here);
if (modes == NULL)
{
// no avail
// shutdown/exit whatever here ...
}
else
{
// iterate thru, make some use of it
modes[index]->xxx
}
---- pseudo code ----
So the question remains why SDL returns/reports no available video modes in
wine.
Any takers?

Hello,
next time you supply an executable, make sure you uncheck "UPX Stub" option when
using aut2exe tool.
Packed/protected executable add unnecessary overhead while
debugging/disassembling target.
>From what i've seen its a bug in autoit software itself and can be considered
harmless (at least in this case).
The compiled script app runs fine.
OleUninitialize() gets called in app shutdown code without any previous call to
OleInitialize().
Wine is a bit chattier about mismatched OLE init/uninit reference count - hence
the error message.
Native windows ole just ignores mismatched counts.
You could fix it by creating a "fake" ole object in your script like
$objShell = ObjCreate ("Shell.Application")
which implicitly calls ole init. The cleanup uninit whould then match.
Just report the bug to the authors of the autoit software.
They should use some flag to balance a call to OleUninitialize in their shutdown
code when OleInitialize has been called once (or not).
Regards

OK, just O0... I noticed gentoo (I guess the ebuild) adds something else to the
flags automatically (as I exported CFLAGS="O0", CXXFLAGS="O0"): -fPIC -Wall
-pipe -fno-strict-aliasing -Wdeclaration-after-statement -Wwrite-strings
-Wpointer-arith -O0
-fPIC is because of the PIC useflag, as I usually prelink (but I haven't since I
recompiled wine); could be stripped if needed. -pipe only accelerates the
compile, so shouldn't be a problem. -fno-strict-aliasing should not do any harm
(and if the mantainers of the ebuild leave it always on I guess it's for good
reasons). And the W are warnings, aren't they? At least I recognize Wall as
so... Nevertheless if they are a problem next time I will just unpack the source
and install under a prefix.
Still hangs, unfortunately.
By the way, I noticed 0.9.31 got released into gentoo, if necessary I can try
recompiling that one (but please with only a set of CFLAGS! :))

I had been playing with ulimit in the console from where I started wine which
didn't help. Apparently it just wasn't wine but X who was complaining here.
Increased maximum number of open files before starting X and the problem seems
to be gone. It's still odd that the limit doesn't seem to affect KDE but
that's another story.
Thanks.

Ok, so it's already a known bug, meaning it'll probably be fixed next version,
and I don't need to do this regression testing...?
Also, I've never done a "patch" to my Wine before, I suppose I'd use it in the
GIT tree that I have. Can you point me to a Howto on adding a patch? I suppose this:
diff --git a/dlls/wined3d/device.c b/dlls/wined3d/device.c
...is a command, and everything afterwards is the actual code of the patch...

however was not producible (for me) on earlier versions of wine (as of

with 0.9.28.

6608 is reported to be fixed in 0.9.26, see last comment)
When simply running:
wine DawnOfWar.exe (install command on first cd)
a graphical screen of the game appears with a button called 'Next'. Pressing
that gives a screen with a progress bar. Before it can begin the installation
crashes.

The Patch changes vlc with OpenGL as output-module a bit.
The GUI-Elements are not overdrawn anymore, but most parts
of the video stay fixed.
Only a small part at the top and at the right side are updated.
It looks like the first frame was drawn at the bottom-left corner
and that is the area in the video that stays fixed.
Using vlc with DirectX as output-module still overwrite
the whole screen.

It's apparently not just systray icons. Having 6 systray icons and 4 konqueror
windows produces the same error. Or 7 systray icons and just 2 konqueror
windows.
I really don't get this. I have no problems running lots of apps and having
lots of open windows. But at some certain low limit Wine stops working.

I understand that, but when I actually play, CS does not use the 3D card.
It runs in software mode. Believe it or not.
I have both Windows and Linux on the same machine, and I can tell the difference.
Want to see both screenshots so you believe it?
Using the -dxlevel option for launching doesn't solve anything.
Also check the WineHQ page for CS:S, because I am not the only one who's stuck
in this situation.

The test crashing is winetest-200701071000-paul-mingw.exe.
I do have some problems with some OpenGL patches. I tried to replace
libglu1-mesa, libglu1-mesa-dev and some others with those recommended for Wine,
but I was driven to a jungle of demands for replacing patches by Synaptic. To
get those patches changed in, Synaptic notified dozens of core Ubuntu patches
like gnome etc. need to be removed first. That would have required me to
reinstall practically the entire system at last! I did try advancing further
even despite that. But I simply had to give up before I couldn't have returned
the old system in case of failure. Even now I had to save tons of patch names to
be able to recover them.

Summary: Conformance test jams everything
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.30.
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: critical
Priority: P2
Component: test
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: imaxfun(a)gmail.com
Running the latest conformance test winetest-200701071000-paul-mingw.exe crashes
after a while on both 0.9.30 and 0.9.31, and causes the whole computer jam.
Nothing else helps but boot. I have been running the tests frequently until the
winetest-200701071000-paul-mingw.exe caused the crashing on Linux in January.
(The test still runs OK on Windows.) I expected the bug to be fixed in new
versions of test or Wine, but no new test has been released since and the new
versions of Wine haven't removed the bug either.
The test runs doing some of the tests seemingly slower than earlier, until a
complete crash while testing sounds. The following error is repeated 14 times
before the crash:
fixme:msvcrt:MSVCRT_sopen : pmode 0x01b6 ignored
The single last error at crash with winetest-200701071000-paul-mingw.exe after
those is:
ALSA lib seq_hw.c:456:(snd_seq_hv_open) open /dev/snd/seq failed: No such file
or directory
I know there is a compatibility problem concerning the gcc compiler and
msvcrt.dll, and seeing those errors that might well be the cause.
General info on my system:
Ubuntu 6.06 LTS
kernel 2.6.15-28-386
gcc (GCC) 4.0.3 (Ubuntu 4.0.3-1ubuntu5) (4.0.3 - i486-linux-gnu)
GNOME v. 2.14.3
Xorg version 7.0.0
This bug is critical for running conformance tests.

Luca - there is no software mode in CS:S.
I used to play this game when I used Windows, and the behaviour is the same.
The Hardware option is always a disabled pull down box, and the Software option
is always just text. Please see this screenshot from a Windows PC running it:
http://www.notebookreview.com/assets/16511.jpg
The Software option is supposed to reflect the DirectX version installed (which
on most Windows PCs, and as reported by Wine is DX9).
The Hardware option can be changed, but not with the dropdown box (not even on
Windows).
To change it, open the CS:S console (enable it the options first), and run:
mat_dxlevel <dxlevel>
Where <dxlevel> is 60, 70, 80, 81 or 90.
I believe this bug should be closed.

For reference, the as installer has a batch part which launches a perl
script, which in turn issues a few commands. This fails at the point
where it calls
xcopy /q /r /i /e Perl\* c:\Perl
Basically wine needs an xcopy equivalent, which is a standalone program
on windows and hence probably ought to be for wine...

Hi, i tried to make a simple exe that triggers this bug. This sample crashes

handles it fine , whereas wine crashes. Hope this simple test helps to solve
