It's not clear that this is an MSI problem; those fixmes
are not uncommon. Attaching a compressed +msi,+relay
or +msi,+file log might help narrow down where the hang happens.
FWIW, http://www.winsoft.eu/support/download-adobe-acrobat.php
seems to have trial versions of the middle eastern
editions of Adobe softwware, perhaps those will be helpful
in reproducing this.

As for the failure to install everything I think it is due to current lack of
JScript support in Wine MSI (and wine too right? or am I missing the JScript
support somewhere?). I think this is due to this line:
fixme:msi:ACTION_CustomAction UNHANDLED ACTION TYPE 5 (L"V9_JS" L"ExpandFeatList")
I will attach a copy of the JScript that I extracted with a hex editor from the
Vector NTI 10.msi file. Basically looking at the msi logs it looks like a lot of
the features don't get automatically installed and this script actually expands
the list... or at least that is my current theory.

Does it still print out a fixme with status c000011f? If so, run the open
socket count test described on bug 3063 and post results.
Is the UDP port for kademlia still open when it breaks?
Run wireshark and capture all UDP traffic. What happens when it breaks, does it
still send and receive data?
Post a +winsock,+tid log. Put a debug mark in the log when it breaks.

This initializes (i don't know if very wisely) a blank PIXELFORMAT structure
passed to wine by the sims
Here is the patch,
by "the original version" i mean the windows version of the first the sims,
with no expansions.
To make he game run you need to remove the copy protection (if there is any,
the linux version seems to have nothing like that) and set the
DirectDrawRenderer to gdi (see http://wiki.winehq.org/UsefulRegistryKeys)

What do you mean with "the original version of the sims" ? Are you referring to
the modified "The Sims for Linux" version that this bug refers to?
Also, could you add the patch as an attachment ? If it needs improvements so
that wine maintainers will accept it, maybe I or someone else can do them.

The code crashes because the sims dows not initialize one DDPIXELFORMAT
structure, modyfing the code to initialize such strucure to default values
let's the original version of the sims (unsafedisked) run till the loading
screens, and then crashes at seemingly random times. i guess there are some
problem wih thread sinchronization. i've a basic patch to address the pixel
format thing, but it's not serious and will never be accepted in wine.

I tested Express Edition (.iso) a while ago.
It has different problems, starting with .NET 2.0 framework installation.
I suspect some stuff in original VS.NET 2005 Enterprise/Prof .msi files is
non-standard (by accident?) thus exposing this specific error in wine.
Google shows there are users which experienced the same problem on windows
(pretty much same error msg in log file).
Cause seems to be kaspersky anti virus software.
Suggested workaround: complete uninstall (deactivating protection does not work?)
Somewhat mysterious...

The two drivers have to be merged. There are no such thing as a fall-back here.
Game enumerates all the available devices, and each driver tries to enumerate
all joysticks. If it can't find any, then it doesn't return any.
Also evdev is the more modern interface with more features. It should be
preferred over js.
Patch is applied, the bug related to evdevice is closed.

Yes, you were right, my system (Gentoo) by default doesn't allow access to
event devices. But so what, why didn't wine fall back to the js device if it
failed to open the event device? It didn't even show a warning. If it can get
button events from js devices, why can't it also get axis events?

Ambro, Wine has two drivers for the joystick. One uses evdev devices
(/dev/input/event*) and the other uses joydev devices (/dev/js*). In these four
patches, the real changes are in the evdev driver (joystick_linuxinput.c). They
fix the problem for me when I allow Wine to access the event devices, but not
for the joydev driver (behaviour is unchanged).
Maybe your system isn't allowing read access on the event devices?

The wiki entry is a workaround, not a fix. It is not acceptable for fglrx to
randomly crash (running valgrind on wine is enough to cause a kernel crash).
Despite the security implications ATI claim that it is actually the user space
code at fault here. If that is true, then it should be fixed. Until that happens
this bug should stay open.

That doesn't matter. If the game doesn't install then that needs to be filed as
a bug (which I believe it already is). ONLY things that are installed WITH WINE
and INTO WINE are supported, NOT LOKI. Same reason ies4linux isn't supported by
us. If it doesn't work then take it up with Loki. This is only for pure Wine.

Creating a "fake" /dev/js0 (pointing to some input device that does exist) made
it start. But now it crashes in the main screen.
Could be the fake joystick device, but I can't test with a real joystick as my

Anyway, wine reports something wrong to the game as it works just fine under
real Windows without a joystick.

A test of treeview focus.
Here is a very small test, including source and executable. The source is
virtually a direct copy of the Wine treeview test, with an additional test
added and minor supporting mods to the existing code.It is compiled on Win2K
with mingw. Unfortunately, it does not seem to give valid results when actually
used as a Wine conformance test. Either focus events don't work under the
conformance test structure (perhaps because the Window is not actually mapped,
and therefore does not have focus), or I am doing something wrong ( rather
likely ;)
However, the attached test actually creates a visible window, so the test works
that way. When run on Win2K, it shows that if a label is being edited, a
(programmatic) scroll of the window does not remove the focus from the edit
field. But clicking on one of the scrollbars with the left mouse button does
remove the focus. When run under Wine, the (programmatic) scroll does remove
the focus from the edit field.
So it appears Wine should not do a SetFocus() in the scroll procedures, but
instead in response to perhaps a WM_NCLBUTTONDOWN message.

After installing both Soa and Tob via the loki installers succesfully, I ran
setup (setting everything to the highest setting and running at 1024x768) and
then started Soa. I had good sound and no problems until I actually started
playing the tutorial after building a Player character. The outside menus would
not redraw unless I pressed escape and then refused to quit, when they would
update themselves. This problem is very similar to bug #6975, but it affects
both TOB and SOA. A window will appear (blank) once dialog is initiated, but the
constant need to exit and deny, exit and deny makes the game unplayable
(especially with spell-casters). I turned off 3d animations and acceleration,
but the problem remained, with somewhat crappier graphics. I am running wine
0.9.30 on 6.06 LTS dapper. if more info is needed just ask! (the only console
messages were dsound errors about incorrect blocksizes).

8bpp color (256 color mode) is not available if the X display is set to 24bpp
color. This can be worked around using RealVNC 4 (vnc4server, xvnc4viewer) for
sure and possibly TightVNC or RealVNC 3. With vnc4 if you use the parameter -cc
3 (e.g. vnc4server :2 -cc 3 -geometry 640x480 -localhost, then issue the command
xvnc4viewer :2) you can have a virtual 8bpp display (in the example a 640x480
window with the virtual screen would appear). This is known as PseudoColor
mode in the vnc documentation.

I recently was having this exact same issue.
Everything worked up to the point when you were to (after loading) enter the
world. It would crash.
I tried a few things; Got the latest version of Wine, changed my video drivers
(NVidia) version. During the last which was changing the video driver versions
I had to turn off gdm. I started X again afterwords (without rebooting) and it
just so happened that a different window manager was the default. I started up
WoW and bang, everything worked perfectly. I thought "Hmm... wonder if it had
something to do with the window manager", so I tried running it in
enlightenment and had the exact same problem again. Ran it in a shell, or twm,
or Windowmaker (the only other window managers I tried) and it worked perfectly
every time.
Goes to show, sometimes reducing the environment to it's simplest level is a
good starting position.
Hope this helps someone. I'm sure glad I'm able to play without issues. :)
Cheers.

I bought Versacheck Business & Enterprise 2007
for $3 at Half-Price Books (great place, if you live
in Bellevue, WA). Trying to install one of its sub-apps
with the command
wine /media/cdrom/vcgold2k7/setup.exe
fails early with the dialog
The wizard was interrupted before VersaCheck Gold 2007 could be completely
installed. I'll attach the interesting bit of the log.

Clearification:
1) The patch from Louis Lenders solves the problem detected in 0.9.30
2) Running WA is posible with SElinux disable (Permissive)
3) Running WA and installer with SElinux enabled (Enforcing) with wine build
from source does not work out off the box.

The access violation on the install program for Worship Assistant (WA) was
caused by SELinux was enabled (Enforcing).
Below commands must be executed on the install program and the WA program after
installation.
chcon -t textrel_shlib_t wa441.exe
chcon -t textrel_shlib_t WA.exe
This is only needed if wine is installed from source's (make install). This was
not a problem with the rpm's from fedora extra with version 0.9.29. I do not
know why.

hmm, I don't see how your test shows that the first part is incorrect? It runs
successfully with the first part applied, because it doesn't even execute this
specific code path. This part only does something if a debugger, which handles
the breakpoint exception, is connected to the process.
Without the first part of the patch winedbg won't work anymore. If you are at a
breakpoint and press 'c' to continue, you don't get over this breakpoint because
nobody increases the eip register.
That said, I'm not sure if this fix belongs into that place where I put it, or
rather in winedbg itself or some other place(ContinueDebugEvent??). Haven't got
time to look into this.
But without this part the patch definitely isn't correct ;)

I'm still not convinced this is has anything to do with dinput. How did you
installed that game? Did you used any dll overrides?
Demo does work fine without any joysticks too.
It could be a ddraw related problem: try using "Virtual Desktop" mode - run
program this way: wine explorer /desktop=foo,800x600 game.exe

I've installed the 0.9.30 version on my other system (Debian i386) as it didn't
want to compile on the AMD64 system (some ./configure issues) so it was a clean
install w/o any previous wine nor motorhead configuration available for the game.
I've also tryed the demo (there were two versions: software and 3dfx - I chose
the software). The demo also doesn't work - the same problem.
Maby you could play the demo because you had a joystick? Maby in such case the
game is able to initialize the DirectInput?
But it ought to be possible to run the game w/o joystick because it worked under
windows.
BTW. I have an original legal copy of the game and therefore it is not a fault
of any crack/modiffication.
The game even worked under windows xp if I copied the installation from win98
to winxp and added some keys in the registry (the game's installer refuses to
proceed when it detects it is beeing run under NT, so the trick was the only
way to play the game undr xp).
When running with wine I've been trying with all possible windows versions'
compatibility (yes even with win2.0 which does not make any sense)
It is the dinput problem.

The bug should be present in the trial, as there is no difference between the

Some sub-menus may work and other not, and this may even change while working

Something is still not correct in the way we enumerate interfaces in winsock. I
was playing StarCraft yesterday with some friends via a VPN in LAN mode, and
while I could get direct messages to the game host, I couldn't see the messages
other players sent and they couldn't see mine. I assume I could only see the
game host because we were in the same LAN, I need to check that.
As I'm seeing somewhat similar problems when doing broadcasts to my dplay test
VMs, I assume this is due to "all interfaces" broadcast messages only being sent
via the primary interface.

I have an application designed for Windows 3.1 call Expert Easy Home Gardening
that only partially works under WINE. It's not an important app for me, but I'm
filing this report in hopes that it will be of help to someone else, most likely
for some other application.
This application tries to install Video for Windows 1.1e (which crashes with an
unimplemented function error (I can attach info if desired)). Skipping the VFW
lets the install complete successfully but the video functionality is
unavailable, and wine emits the following error:
fixme:mmsys:mmTaskCreate16 This is currently broken. It will fail
fixme:mci:MCI_LoadMciDriver Couldn't load driver for type L"AVIVIDEO".
If you don't have a windows installation accessible from Wine,
you perhaps forgot to create a [mci] section in system.ini
I suspect the mmsys: message indicates the culprit.

I have fixed this bug. I attached the patch and will submit it to wine-patches.
It is a simple one-line change:
--- a/dlls/msi/action.c
+++ b/dlls/msi/action.c
@@ -642,7 +642,7 @@ UINT MSI_InstallPackage( MSIPACKAGE *pac
msi_apply_transforms( package );

INSTALLUILEVEL_REDUCED )
{
package->script->InWhatSequence |= SEQUENCE_UI;
rc = ACTION_ProcessUISequence(package);
Basically, the current code was not taking into account the flags like
INSTALLUILEVEL_SOURCESONLY (=0x100) and was taking anything that had these
flags to be a full UI install. The Vector NTI installer MSI files were
INSTALLUILEVEL_NONE (=2) | INSTALLUILEVEL_SOURCEONLY (0x100) = 0x102 and thus
wine was thinking it was a full ui level install because it was just seeing
if the UI level is greater than reduced UI level, rather than just taking the
part of the UI level value that refers just to the actual UI level without the
flags.
Unfortunately it seems like the installation of Vector NTI with the wine
MSI, although now seems to install most things, is still not complete (but
this error is gone). I will have to look at the further logs of the install now.

Confirmed. Application sends TB_SETBITMAPSIZE with 128x16 (wrong, size is for a
single icon icon) followed by a TB_ADDBITMAP with an 128x16 bitmap for 8 buttons
- native seems to reset the size on TB_ADDBITMAP according to the bitmap passed.

Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal

When I try to start a game (whether it is Natural-Selection, Counter-strike
Source, Team Fortress), the Steam window is displayed on TOP of the game itself,
making things unplayable. If I try to close out of the Steam window, the game
disappears and goes back to my XFCE 4.40 desktop. There is no taskbar button for
the game itself, so the game is open, but there is no way to switch back to it
again.

It seems that Need for Speed: Carbon is also affected by this bug.
We have now 3 d3d9 apps that are affected + one d3d8 game.
All can be fixed if you comment out in d3d8/9 volumetexture.c:
if (hrc == D3D_OK && NULL != ppVolumeLevel) {
IWineD3DVolumeTexture_GetParent(myVolume, (IUnknown **)ppVolumeLevel);
IWineD3DVolumeTexture_Release(myVolume);
}
Or substitute != with ==
Earth 2160 starts, showing the menu. Most affects are missing. Dont know if this
is another bug.

You are right, msvc and mingw align 64 bit types on 8 byte
boundaries, plain gcc doesn't. This issue has came up before,
and Alexandre fixed most basic types by adding a compiler attribute
to their typedef:
typedef signed __int64 DECLSPEC_ALIGN(8) INT64, *PINT64;
See basetsd.h. The one he didn't fix is __int64. I don't
know if that is on purpose or if __int64 should get the same
treatment. If not we could use INT64 in the definition of _stati64.

Hackish implementation of _MCIWDCREATE
The attached patch allows TJPT to start - it crashes later when you try to
start a game but that seems to be unrelated.
Note that this implementation is just a hack - it will crash when the 32-bit
wndproc tries to send itself one of the wrapped messages with a linear pointer
in lParam. I'm not sure how to properly implement this one, we'd need to
somehow just translate the 16-bit messages - but the only place where this is
possible seems to be user32...

Leslie, bug 3032 seems to have some explanation on this compilation breakage. I
guess namely patch [7] is one which Marcuss kept in his head and which lets you
to continue compilation. You should download it in "raw" form and apply it by
hand to your current test-tree before you retry compiling. (In a case you didn't

Hi.
Same problem here.
I'm using wine 0.9.29 from Debian Etch AMD64.
The outputs of 'wine motor.exe' and 'WINEDEBUG=+dinput wine motor.exe' are in
attachments.
the output of 'WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dinput=n" wine motor.exe is:
err:module:import_dll Library DINPUT.dll (which is needed by L"C:\\Program
Files\\Motorhead\\motor.exe") not found
err:module:LdrInitializeThunk Main exe initialization for L"C:\\Program
Files\\Motorhead\\motor.exe" failed, status c0000135
The game uses a very old DX 5.0, so why it encounters such problems?
Please resolve this issue;)
Regards, Tomek
PS. I think the 'Version' the bug applies to should be changed to at least
0.9.29
