Summary: dinput regression in tomb raider legends
Product: Wine
Version: CVS
Platform: Other
URL: http://www.tombraider.com
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-directx-dinput
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: andras(a)csevego.net
CC: stefandoesinger(a)gmx.at
When I start tomb raider legends, it goest to an endless loop of
trace:dinput:IDirectInputWImpl_EnumDevices - checking device 2 ('Wine
Linux-input joystick driver') function, and sometimes after that, it crashes.
When it crashes, it crashes in wine/dlls/dinput/joystick_linuxinput.c line
350.
When I write an return FALSE; to this file function joydev_enum_deviceW's
first line, the game starts, but when I enter the game it doesn't receive any
of keyboard or mouse events. With native dinput and dinput8.dll it works
correctly.
I think this is a regression that created by the patch named support more than
1 joystick or something like name patch.
I'll attach log.

Actually it is the second part. I can play just the beginnig. I talked about

technicaly it is the first chapter, but it is the second part of the game.

The processes in comment #12 are normal - Wine removes it's name from the
process name.
Make sure and remove ~/.wine dir before you test. Check that your cdrom drive is
mapped to one of the Wine drives ex d: (using winecfg).
Also please 'cd' into program's dir when you run it. And don't use *NIX paths
with Wine ex:
cd /mnt/cdrom && wine setup.exe
or
cd /mnt/cdrom && wine "d:\setup.exe"
And please don't paste huge amounts of text here. Create attachments instead.

I've had a simmilar issue in empire earth when I hacked old ddraw to start it

look up the wine-devel archives, maybe I can find his answer in the archives.

I'm running into the same crash, I attached a dump in bug 5702, but here's a
direct link (which hopefully works):
http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=2948&action=view
As I noted there, this happens for me after loading the *second* area, not the
first, so one can actually play for a few minutes without issue.
Another interesting thing I've noted is that this crash looks suspiciously
like the crash when trying to quit the game normally. It looks like MP2 is
freeing resources in a way we didn't expect it to in both cases and ends up
dying. It would seem that this would explain why the first level loads fine,
but the second doesn't, as on loading the first one, there's no resources to
free yet, but that's not the case for the second.

Unless we have a test case that works all the time on Windows (not just by
luck), then we should close this bug as invalid. There isn't enough information
at the moment to work out what is being double-freed, let alone what steps we
need to take to stop it crashing in Wine.

err:dsound:DSOUND_MixOne underrun on sound buffer 0x7fdd4110
When I clicked to load a custom map on Warcraft 3. So to experiment, I turned
off sound and tried the same procedure. The map load time was just as bad. So I
do not think that this error is completely sound based. I think it arises when
wine is dealing with other parts of the game, and handles them inefficiently.

This worked before and was broken in revision 1.22 of dlls/dinput/keyboard.c;
after reverting to 1.21 everything works again.
If you keep holding a keyboard key in Max Payne 2 (e.g. for movement of the
character) the game freezes and won't continue until you let go of the key.
This can be caused by all except the modifier keys. Another case in which the
bug won't be triggered is if you jump to a side and keep pressing the key for
the appropriate direction.

>The logs do not help me to find an error in winspool, that result in
>the mentioned failure.
>("+psdrv" from comment #1 was not included. "Please add ..." from my comment #6)
Its seems rater that the psdrv wasn't used by corel draw. And I think it isn't
"bug" in a literal sense. The bug is more in the logical meaning of the wineprint.
There should (must) be configuration options to configure:
- Which printer type is reported to the windows apps
Should rater report the original printer type configured in cups than
just tell the app: Its just postscript printer.
I think if wine whould report a "normal" (in my case) HP Laserjet 4 Corel
would use the "normal" winprint api instead of self generating postscript
code
- What to do with the generated (in case of Corel) post script code.
I think the whole reason behind this bug is that wine transports the generated
postscript code directly "as text" to the printerspooler instead to tell him
"Look here comes postscript code, render it for the selected printer model".
This assumption is based on the first line of the paper printed postscript code:
"%%BeginDocument: Wine passthrough". So its just a matter of the handling of the
generated printer code and this should not be that big reason to handle that.

A user handed me his 12 year old Lotus Smartsuite 3.1 disk, said
"I have lots of Lotus 123 r5 spreadsheets that only
this version of Lotus can read. Can you get this to run in Linux?"
So I gave it a shot. Its installer aborted with
"Insufficient disk space", which was not quite accurate, as I have
1.7GB free. +relay showed:

On return, int 21h ah=36h has:
AX = sectors per cluster
BX = number of available clusters
CX = number of bytes per sector
DX = number of clusters per drive
That value for CX seems really high, btw.
By trial and error, I found that the app
was happy when I reported 1GB of free space
with a reasonable CX, so I coded up a patch
that returns that if real free space is over 1GB,
and it lets the app install. I'll attach that next.
The installer has heap and dde problems later
which make for a rough ride, but it does seem
to finish successfully. It then fails to run
because of a problem loading module 'SOUND',
but that's bug 3950.

Indeed it is a regression. Looks like something timing related. I know that the
patch in question does fix number of games.
Here I don't see why would it brake the game. Especially after some period of time.

Summary: Mouse movement impaired in American McGhee's Alice

After upgrading from Wine 9.16 to Wine 9.17 I noticed that mouse movement in
American McGhee's Alice loses sensitivity and consistency (i.e. sometimes moves
at normal speed, sometimes slow) - I've rechecked it by going back to 9.16 and
then to 9.17 again. Shame really, the game is 99% perfect on Wine 9.16 :(

Notes is checking if there's no crashed instance. It does this by checking the
shared memory data area of the nnotes.dll (MapViewOfFile) and has a look into
it's own process table. To find out if a process has crashed before it checks on
every OSLoadProgramm (notes related) the processes CreationTime. If it finds a
process in this table with a different Creation Time it normally shows the
Message "Process ID has been reused". Currently Wine doesn't implement the
CreationTime. So it's always different to the one that's stored in table.
I hope to have a patch ready 'till the end of the week.

Summary: ntdll: Heap implementation has a performance bottleneck
Product: Wine
Version: CVS
Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-kernel
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: hallo(a)michael-kaufmann.ch
Wine's heap implementation (HeapAlloc(), HeapFree(), etc. in dlls/ntdll/heap.c)
is very slow if many small memory blocks are allocated and freed.
I have found this problem with HomeSite 5.2. It's an HTML editor that contains a
syntax checker. The syntax checker needs 120 seconds to load on Wine. Most users
will think that the program has crashed. With the native MSVCRT.DLL (which
contains a custom heap implementation), it takes only 2 seconds. Wine's built-in
MSVCRT.DLL just forwards the C heap functions to the OS heap functions, which
have serious performance problems.
A similar problem has been reported on the mailing list:
http://www.winehq.org/pipermail/wine-devel/2005-February/034095.html
According to the source code, Wine's heap implementation is described in the
book "Windows 95 System Programming Secrets". This implementation is
inefficient: KB225099 ( http://support.microsoft.com/kb/225099/en-us ) says that
the heap implementation of Windows NT 4.0 SP4 and 2000 is much better than the
heap implementation of Windows 95.
I have created a trace of HomeSite's memory requests and written a program that
replays the trace. The program prints how long it takes to replay the trace. My
measurements:
Wine: 125.0 seconds (HeapAlloc and built-in malloc), 4.5 seconds (native malloc
of MSVCRT.DLL)
Windows 95 (on VMware): 55.0 seconds (HeapAlloc), 4.0 seconds (malloc)
Windows NT 4.0 SP6 (on VMware): 3.6 seconds (HeapAlloc and malloc)
So Wine's HeapAlloc is much too slow. Windows NT 4.0's malloc just calls
HeapAlloc (like Wine).
Does anybody know some details about the heap implementation of Windows NT/2000/XP ?

Hi Roland
I read the PS-Output but I'm sorry, I do not understand Postscript enough.
(from google: Encapsulated Postscript starts with "BeginResource").
Can you activate Postscript Level 1 compatibility in CorelDraw?
Does it help?
The logs do not help me to find an error in winspool, that result in
the mentioned failure.
("+psdrv" from comment #1 was not included. "Please add ..." from my comment #6)
Arcobat Reader seems to have the same EPS-Problems (not tested yet)
I have no Idea, how to Help a.t.m.

I don't know if this might help find out what's causing the problem, but I
noticed the same thing when running a direct sound demo that I downloaded from:
http://www.toymaker.info/Games/html/sound1.html
There are four .wav files supplied with the demo and the source is available
from the same page.
1) err:dsound:DSOUND_MixOne underrun on sound buffer
I've not seen this problem when samples are played just once. When they are
looped, the underrun problem never affects the Drumroll.wav and Drum3.wav, but
always affects Drum1.wav and Drum2.wav.
2) err:dsound:DSOUND_MixInBuffer length not a multiple of block size
I've seen this error always comes up multiple times before I start seeing the
underrun error when running Drum1.wav or Drum2.wav in a loop, but once the
underrun error starts, then I never see the block size error again. If the
underrun error doesn't start thent he block size error will loop indefinitely.
3) Sometimes the samples play distorted like there's static in the background.
This can start happening the first time the sample is played, or after any
number of times that the sample played without distortion. Wine produces no
errors when this happens. I was using the Drumroll.wav to test this since it
never produces the underrun error, but I've heard the same thing happen to all
four samples.
I've found that if the static problem doesn't happen at first, then I can quite
often trigger it by activating another window then switching back to the dsound
demo. It doesn't always work, and sometimes when the static effect is
happening, switching back and forth will "fix" it.
I'm running Ubuntu 6.06 on a nVidia nForce 3 board with built in AC97 audio,
Athlon 64 and 1GB of RAM. I've compiled wine 0.9.17 from CVS and I'm using the
OSS driver. Enabling/disabling driver emulation has no effect. I've got
exactly the same problems affecting GTAIII, so it's not just the dsound demo.

Updated link for test application.
I will test out with latest version of Wine but I doubt if it will work since
I believe that the OpenGL bug 2398 must be addressed before we have any chance
of it working. Let me know if you know differently.

Additional Note:
All Cups printers are reported as Postscript printers to apps by default (as far
as I tested it yet).
The problem here is that Corel Draw handles reported postscript printers
diffrent than "windows" printers. So in the case Corel detects a postscript
printer, it directly generates postscript code. But this code is not processed
by the local cups filter (for the selected printer). It rater sends the
postscript code directly to the printer. But even if there whould be a
postscript printer, it declares the code as raw text instead of postscript code.
This means the printer always prints the postscript code and not the graphic it
describes.

The patch seems to work! Picking 'local install' for the appropriate
couple items in the installer causes nlnotes.exe to in fact get installed.
Now Notes has a problem on startup, but that's a different story (bug 5708, to
be exact).

This is a continuation of bug 5662.
After applying the patch to get past Juan's mishap and bug 5662,
Notes 7 seems to install ok, but running it looks like this:
~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/lotus/notes$ ~/wine-git/wine nlnotes.exe
fixme:ole:CoRegisterMessageFilter message filter has been registered, but will
not be used
fixme:system:SystemParametersInfoW Unimplemented action: 8193

0x8001011d
~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/lotus/notes$
and no window is ever shown.
Setting win98, installing dcom98 with
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="ole32=n" wine DCOM98.EXE
and starting notes with
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="ole32,rpcrt4,oleaut32=n" ~/wine-git/wine nlnotes.exe
behaves differently; the app doesn't terminate, but it just sits
there, never having shown a window.

discovered that it doesn't want to run dk2 seemingly because of the same seh
stack overflow.

Then I will read the winedbg manual to figure out how to get useful info with it

I have got a Windows program which uses Mac style CR for newlines in the source

file is treated as a single line, while using the native msvcrt results in
correct treatment of the CR as newlines.
