This has nothing to do with DirectPlay; the game needs a DIB Engine to run at
a decent speed.
In future bug reports, please include a short problem description and game
name in the title. For example, this bug could have had the summary
'Unnormal slowness in Age of Empires II'.

Summary: Crash with VariantChangeType()
Product: Wine
Version: unspecified
Platform: PC-x86-64
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-ole
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: grolgh(a)gmail.com
VariantChangeType is observed crashing if it gets the same type.
It takes three parameters, input, expected type id, and output variant.
If you try to convert a VT_BOOL to a VT_BOOL it crashes.
Example program, not minimal:
This program crashes a bug in VariantChangeType()
Download:
http://www.batman.no/buzzwine/
Reference Screenshot:
http://www.batman.no/buzzclone/pre-v0.3-1.gif
Steps to reproduce:
Download entire folder. Unpack Gear.tar.gz into Gear. Start "wine buzz.exe".
Press "OK". Click treeview, "Generators". DnD FSM Infector next to "Master".
Doubleclick "Infector". Notice how sliders are drawn wrong, and does not work
correctly and eventually crashes the program.
Untested example code:
VARIANT v;
VariantInit(&v);
v.vt=VT_BOOL;
v.boolValue=FALSE; VARIANT v2;
VariantInit(&v2);
VariantChangeType(&v, VT_BOOL, &v2);

run eve.exe and wait for the loginscreen to pop up (needs patch from

open the Monitor window with the keycombo and check the VM Size
it should report the virtual memory usage of Eve as seen in the windows task manager

If you start EVE Online (with the help of the patch at
http://elfe.mine.nu/eve/linux/ ) the login screen (ExeFile.exe) allocates more
and more memory. (memory usage is constant on windows)
no login required
start Eve via wine, wait about 15 seconds after the loginscreen pops up and
watch the memory usage climb in top
I guess it's in the d3d code as the login screen is d3d and not doing anything
else at that time

I have another guess (I need to stop to do this) about this regression problem:
has something to do with image resizing. Could be this guess usefull to do a

I just tested with 0.9.17 (well, cvs from a few hours after 0.9.17),

Running the app exits early just as before, but with fewer warnings.
Here's all that's output now:

Oddly, even setting win98 and running with dcom98 installed,
and ole32/oleaut32/rpcrt4 overridden, it still fails early.
Sometimes it puts up a dialog box for a moment first.
So I no longer know whether this is an ole bug.
I'm setting it back to wine-misc for now.
There are quite a few installer warnings; maybe the app
isn't installed properly? I'll attach a log.

The patch went in here:
http://winehq.org/pipermail/wine-cvs/2006-July/024451.html
But 0.9.17 was released here:
http://winehq.org/pipermail/wine-cvs/2006-July/024394.html
So the patch didn't quite make it into 0.9.17; it'll be in 0.9.18.
BTW, the exact messages were
fixme:variant:VarCat types 4 / 3 not supported
fixme:variant:VarCat types 0 / 4 not supported
They are gone with current cvs.

Let me repeat again, what shows up as Local Area Network options has nothing to
do with Battle.net support. You don't get that as your last response shows. SC's
Battle.net is 100% UDP in every version of starcraft. Don't tell me what you
read somewhere on Starcraft's Battle.net -- find out yourself by taking packet
captures! Even the patch 1.09 log shows your wrong -- It says "LAN play via
UDP". So what they did with 1.09 was take the battle.net UDP code and adapted it
for LAN play. UDP was always in the game up to that point but it was only for
Battle.net.
You can do whatever you want with your bug, but I thought it odd that you admit
nothing was fixed; just a stand-alone patching work-around and you also have the
UDP fallacy.
What you should have looked for is the difference between "realmed" battle.net
starcraft and "classic" battle.net. Realm support was added in 1.08.

I also have applied Stefan's patch on my Wine 0.9.16 and played one Starcraft
game. My impression goes like this: WOW!!! If that thing isn't as fast as
Windows, it must be getting close. I'll do more stress test in the coming days
;) and I'll let you know of any problems I encounter.

I have reinstalled the game on my win2k box and oh! surprise: no UDP option in
the menu. As far as the average player is concerned, there is no UDP support for
LAN/Internet games in SC1.0. That comes in 1.09. Closing this report is 100%
justified. End of the argument.
What the UDP packets you saw are for exactly is another story. I think I saw
somewhere UDP was used from the beginning for some things (bnet related
probably), but not to play games.

Looking at the registry entries on Windows, I see that while IDriverT has a
service, it doesn't intend to be started by COM. I now think that the problem is
with the services code in advapi32, in that it doesn't cope at all well when
StartServiceCtrlDispatcher is called without the process having been started by
StartService.
See:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dllproc/ba…
- it should return ERROR_FAILED_SERVICE_CONTROLLER_CONNECT and not hang.

Wine does not emulate complete CD-ROM from it's image. Nor it is the goal of Wine.
You have to insert real CD-ROM into CD-ROM drive and try again.
Also please verify you can play audio from this CD-ROM.

I updated the eve patchfile with a little improvement on the login issue.
eve-2006-07-11.diff is available at http://elfe.mine.nu/eve/linux/
Basicly it returns the needed buffer lenght now but still isn't working right.
the Eve client can be downloaded from

hopefully they fix the testserver soon (proxy not connected error)
also usefull is the logserver (start before eve.exe and start a new workspace
from the file menu)
don't know if the patchfile is usefull for non NVidia users
chat with me (Elfe) on IRC
(I hopefully can get 1 or 2 test accounts on the testserver again)

I know this may seem a bit of a hassle, but this will eliminate this possibility:
Compile or obtain a copy of wine that is compiled with gcc 3.4 or 3.3, and then
run the game with that build of wine and without the NoCD crack. If you are
using AMD64, make sure you are using kernel 2.6.16 or later.

I'm using the Wine-packages provided by fedora extras (tested with versions

I have used noCD-cracks (two completely different for the two versions of wc3)
because Wine seems to have been compiled with gcc 4.x and therefore copy

so you have to use kill -9 on all wine processes to make it really die.)

so I'm adding the 'download' keyword to this bug.

Corel no longer offers a trial of Corel Draw 9,
but there are books that come with trial CDs of Corel Draw 9,
and Corel Draw 9 itself goes for $30 or so at ebay.
Does the bug still happen with Corel Draw 11 or Corel Draw X?

The Window manager (i use KDE) interference you guys suspected is correct. I
disabled alt + left click combination in the WM config and all is fine. I
don't use it so no big loss there.
The alt + left click interference started after 15-06, the next wine i tested
was from 17-06, and i got the interference with the WM.
I am willing to close this bug, but i'll wait for other opinions.

What WM are you using? It is a feature in most WMs that holding alt down you can
move a window by holding left-mouse button down anywhere on the window.
The "regression" you are seeing, could be that Wine now properly exposes this
game's window to WM. In other words this window is "managed". Before it might
have been "unmanaged".
Please disable dragging window with alt down in your WM and try again.

CVS 11-07-2006 -> bug is there
CVS 15-06-2006 ->works ok
CVS 01-07-2006 ->doesn't work(bug still there)
CVS 20-06-2006 -> got some strange results, like moving the directx
full-screen window when pressing alt. I blame not making a "make clean" before
compileing.
I'll do some more regression testing later. It takes about a hour to make a
compile from scratch on my computer, so patience is needed.

After first start of Jagged Alliance 2 Wildfire a serial has to be entered. The

Wow, that patch works great! Thanks, Stefan Dösinger!
I applied it to 0.9.16, and it fixed EVERYTHING. No more slowdowns at the main
menu or skirmish score screen, no mouse flicker or droppings, and no hitpoint
bar related slowdown.
I think 32 bit depth is as fast as 0.9.15 now. I'll switch around between
.15, .16, and patched .16 to make sure. I'll give it a lot of testing and post
again if I run into any problems with patched .16. So far it's perfect.
"Is it specially slow when moving the mouse pointer?"
I didn't remember noticing any difference - it seemed to do all that just as
bad while the mouse was still.

The wine 0.9.16 i got was from Fedora extras, perhaps they changed something,
althow i doubt it.
I think it's a wine issue, because i get the error with wine 0.9.16 and i
don't get it with 0.9.15. I didn't change anything on the WM between the
installs of wine, so it's not a WM issue. I can even run D2 from a source tree
of wine 0.9.7 without problems.
I'll do some regression tests.

Tiebreak patch
I think you're right that as long as you stay within the first 256 points,
there won't be any chance of different sequences comparing identically.
I think your understanding of the spec appears correct, too, but I'm a bit out
of my ken as well. If I understand it correctly, a tiebreak along the lines of
the attached patch should do it.
However, the VB runtime passes along flags to VarBstrCmp like NORM_IGNORECASE,
and I'm unsure how to deal with the tiebreak when things like that are passed
along. See:
http://www.unicode.org/reports/tr10/#Multi_Level_Comparison
Ignoring the flags altogether is also not correct, that causes some tests to
fail.
Any suggestions?

The problem is in SHGetPathFromIDListW. SHGetPathFromIDListW calls
IShellFolder_GetAttributesOf on the passed-in pidl with the SFGAO_FILESYSTEM
attribute, and fails (returns FALSE) if it's not still set after it's called.
ISF_Desktop_fnGetAttributesOf does not set this flag for the My Computer item
(and tests show this is correct.) Thus SHGetPathFromIDListW fails, and the app
uses an uninitialized buffer.

To be sure, I would go into the WM config screens and make disable all hotkey
functions that include the alt key. That may or may not work, because the WM
may decide to use alt as an activator anyways (for pressing and releasing alt,
and then using the arrow keys to switch between menus).
One thing I wonder about is if there is something in the registry for window
management. I recall that there used to be a DXGrab option and several
options for how X handled windows.. I know the DXGrab is removed now, but I
wonder if there something X is doing that can be controlled. My other
question is this: Is this issue specific to Xorg vs XFree, or vice versa, or
does it affect both?
Lastly, George, could you do a regression test to find out which patch broke
this behavior? Instructions are in the development docs, but if you need
assistance, anyone watching this bug will be more than happy to assist.

I didn't test right now, but this used to work fine for me when I tried D2. I
can imagine that Alt+mouse is some key combination for the window manager. My
kde uses that to move the window. The new ddraw code puts the main window
under the wm's control, maybe the old code didn't.
Jesse, I don't expect the patch from 5526 to help here. D2 never had the issue
from bug 5526(At least not in d3d mode).
Could be completely ddraw unrelated too.

When you run the Sound Forge 8 trial installer, it will ask you to install the
Windows Installer service, which fails, but that's a duplicate of another bug.
After this point, the msi file you want to run should be in
.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Sony Setup/Sound Forge 8.0/forge80_enu.msi. Running
msiexec on this msi, you get to a screen that says you have missing required
components, but no indication of what they are. We get this error:
err:msi:msi_dialog_create_controls no handler for element type L"ListBox"
So the installer wants to give us a list of components we need to install, and
we even have the option of installing them directly in the installer. We'll
need to implement the msi ListBox control to get this functionality. A patch is
on the way.

RSAENH_CPEncrypt
there is a check that compares *pdwDataLen > dwBufLen and returns the error
MSDN says if pbData is NULL (which is the case here) the function should

Well, the ddraw rewrite was also about sharing d3d code between ddraw, d3d8
and d3d9.
The main idea behind using opengl for ddraw is to handle Blits to the render
target in hardware, and to have color conversions handled in hardware. This
can really improve performance, in those games that work I get 500 fps instead
of 40 fps :-) (Well, swat3 and worms 2 with hacks). There is a hacky patch for
the old ddraw code which makes it use opengl, and it helped the performance of
the games mentioned here until the mouse was moved, then they crashed because
of multithreading issues.
Multithreading was the reason for me to port ddraw over to wined3d. This issue
is common for all d3d versions, now we have to fix it only once in wined3d and
it will work for all dx versions :-)

Proposed fix implementing async surface updates
This patch takes the old async surface update code into wined3d. The
asynchronous surface updates move the front buffer->screen blits out of the
main rendering path so they do not block the app. (Except if requested by the
app via DD*_WAIT flags). This fixes the performance issues due to the mouse in
C&C Tiberian sun and Age of Empires 2. Moving the mouse doesn't block the
entire game now.
It doesn't fix the slowness due to GetDC(requires a GDI engine or gdi opengl
driver) nor the real cause of the color conversion slowness(requires opengl
rendering). But it moves the slow blitting out of the performance critical
rendering path.
This patch needs more cleanup and regression testing before it can be commited
to wine, I'm just posting it here for testing

thats wierd. It's a ddraw game. Why do you need OGL for that? It's pure 2D graphics.
Plus, i thought the whole slowness in ddraw comes from the color conversions
when running X with higher depths. It's odd that it is still that slow when
running X with 8bit. Then there shouldn't be any color conversions anymore, in
theory ;)

That GUID, 4955dd33-b159-11d0-8fcf-00aa006bcc59, appears in a lot
of posts about not being able to run things under Wine.
It appears to be provided by msimtf.dll.
Maybe it's time to try creating a stub implementation of that dll.

Is it specially slow when moving the mouse pointer? The problem is that with
the currect synchronous surface updates unlocking or flipping blocks the app
while blitting the surface to the screen.
I will implement this in wined3d using the code from old ddraw, now that my
tests are over :-) Still the best fix would be to get opengl rendering working
correctly for 2D games, even if they use 8bpp

I'd like to draw the attention on the results of running Starcraft with Wine
0.9.16. That game also plays much slower than it used to on a 16bpp or 24bpp
display. The specific reason I want to mention this is that SC being an 8bpp
game, it is not possible to workaround the slowness by using a display with
equal bpp (8 bpp being unsupported by OGL).

You cannot use native ole32 with builtin rpcrt4.
This is part of the general rule:
YOU CANNOT MIX A NATIVE DCOM DLL WITH A BUILTIN ONE.

I think the error could be caused by ole storage.
Could you generate one more debug log with the options "+ole,+storage,+seh"?

There is a workaround: set wintab32.dll to native. You do not need the actual
native dll.

Summary: Steam web pages blank. Games crash on exit.

After the following commit Steam showing empty page. Games run, but crash after
exiting.
commit 7027ed458b56fce57e9d3424fe2c7005be1110eb
Author: Jacek Caban <jacek(a)codeweavers.com>
Date: Fri Jun 30 23:40:54 2006 +0200
shdocvw: Get rid of Mozilla ActiveX control dependency.
Re-installing Steam fixes the problem. But this affects all the applications
that were working with Mozilla ActiveX controls. Here is the few lines from
+mshtml trace:
trace:mshtml:load_gecko ()
trace:mshtml:load_gecko found path L"C:\\PROG~FBU\\MOZC~HTG\\"
err:mshtml:load_gecko Could not load XPCOM: 126
This indicates that new mshtnl tries to load existing version of Gecko but
fails. I think at this point it should ask to download new version and install it.
One more possible fix is:
wine regedit /D
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\CLSID\{1339B54C-3453-11D2-93B9-000000000000}"

Summary: The initial install patsh of the Lotus Notes 6.5.4 demo
are incorrect
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.16.
Platform: All
URL: http://www-128.ibm.com/developerworks/lotus/downloads/
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
Keywords: download
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-msi
AssignedTo: truiken(a)gmail.com
ReportedBy: truiken(a)gmail.com
CC: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
When you get to the Installation Path Selection screen of the Lotus Notes 6.5.4
demo installer, the program files path should be "C:\Program
Files\lotus\notes\", and the data path should be "C:\Program
Files\lotus\notes\data\", but both fields are just "\". The problem is that
AppSearchReg is looking for the registry key "SOFTWARE\\Lotus\\Notes\\6.0" and
the values "Path" and "DataPath". AppSearchReg mistakenly uses RegCreateKey, so
no matter what, we always report that the key exists, and when we try to find
the value, it's not there, so the installer defaults to "\". I'm sending a
patch to fix this later tonight.

Wine expand doesn't support cab files like win2k expand. Wine expand is unable

the CD is able to decompress them.

There's no fake dll for winspool.drv in wine,
and 'touch winspool.dll' doesn't help :-(
Maybe I should try making a winspool.dll that
forwards to winspool.drv.
