I've found an interesting detail using all Wine versions as they were
released. With 0.9.16 the behaviour changed. Diablo still stops working when I
ask Warriv that "I want to go to the East", but the window with the error
message no longer appears.
Something in the Wine code has been changed that is connected to the problem,
because I did not change my installation (all files are still the same).

I just tried Aquamark again with today's git on a fresh ~/.wine, it installs
and runs straight out of the box. It produces some pretty graphics, although I
have no idea how correct they are. The mouse doesn't work correctly though,
Aquamark keeps recentering the mouse and the mouse is never actually able to
move, this is visible on screen (both the X cursor and the Aquamark cursors
are visible, but they're not always on top of eachother).

That patch didn't work, but James' second try seems to do the trick:
http://www.winehq.org/pipermail/wine-patches/2006-June/028147.html
James says that (because Wine doesn't implement caching yet),
the .msi gets downloaded twice, but at least it gets downloaded and used now.
The app still doesn't install; see bug 5573.

The culprit font is sserife.fon. My version is built from wine. Saulius, looking
at your log, yours is pulled out of the windows\fonts directory. Where did you
obtain it from?
I'm sorry, but the crash is in the same spot. And there has to be a reason why
Stefan's patch makes no difference here. I can play without the font and the patch.

One problem is that /regserver is unimplemented in msiexec, but there's already
a bug report for that. You can workaround this problem by running msiexec /i
forge80_enu.msi directly. The problem now is that the installer makes you
select components to install, and you can't click next until you select at least
one component. However, since we haven't implemented the ListBox control in
msi, you can't select anything, and you can't proceed. This should be fixed
when the ListBox control is implemented.

The very slow displaying of EULA mentioned in this bug report:

is the result of commit 73c7420c5a48d5810f30ffdca59dc36c806b4bf5, work on
GetTextExtentExPointW. It uses an order n-squared algorithm to compute text
extent. Displaying the EULA during installation of the Adobe product found here:
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobatpro/tryreg.html
takes about 7-8 minutes. Reverting the code prior to this commit causes that to
drop to a few seconds.

The reason of the crash is the NM_TOOLTIPSCREATED notification sent when the
application is not prepared for it (the ScintillaEditView::execute is called
with this==NULL. This exception is caught in WinMain which tries to show a
message box but that generates a WM_ACTIVATEAPP which crashes in
Notepad_plus::checkModifiedDocument as _pEditView is uninitialized - this is the
crash we observe). If I comment out line 5649 of toolbar.c Notepad++ starts but
I haven't investigated what's the correct behaviour.

The problem is that the installer is running the following query:
"SELECT `_stpStdDlls`.`File`, `Binary`.`Data` FROM `_stpStdDlls`, `Binary` WHERE
`_stpStdDlls`.`Binary_` = `Binary`.`Name`"
which we think is invalid, because we return ERROR_BAD_QUERY_SYNTAX. This is
because we don't implement joins yet. Assigning to Mike, so he can take a look
at it when he gets back.

Righto, I think I understand. Sorry if I talk a bit of nonsense here, I'm just
trying to get things clear in my head...
As long as the individual characters stay within the first 256 points, should
there be any danger of different sequences matching, as I don't think there are
any decomposed characters within this range?
So, from looking at the code for wine_compare_string, there are three levels of
comparison (compare_unicode_weights, compare_diacritic_weights,
compare_case_weights) - am I right in assuming these correspond to the order of
1. alphabetic ordering
2. diacritic ordering
3. case ordering
(I'm copying from: http://www.unicode.org/reports/tr10/#Scope)
Should there be a 4th tie-breaking level here?

BSTRs always contain Unicode chars in 32-bit programs. MSDN give a better
description of the meaning of lcid in CompareString. For example, in Spanish
locales, the two-character sequence CH compares greater than the character C,
but less than the sequence CA, because CH is technically (or at least,
lexicographically) one character in Spanish.

I had sort of been assuming that the compares would be ANSI string compares (ie
a string comprising of 8 bit characters), so it would be a fairly
straightforward byte by byte comparison. Should the varbstrcmp function do
different stuff depending on whether they are the old-fashioned ANSI strings or
whether they are Unicode strings? MSDN did not seem entirely useful on this
point to me...

The strings are concatenated, so you end up with strings L"\0001\0002" and
L"\0002\0001". They look different, so I'd expect VarBstrCmp to say so too.
Rob claimed CompareStringW returns that the two strings are equal; I'm unable to
verify that. So it looks (to me) like a difference between unicode.org's tables
for certain characters, and Microsoft's, and I'm not sure what to do about it,
since we autogenerate our code page tables from the unicode.org data.
That being said, using VB strings to store abitrary binary data looks a little
unusual to me; certain non-identical byte sequences will end up comparing as
equal in certain locales.

O.k. so I tried with OpenSUE-10.1, Wine Version 0.9.16 from rpm-package.
Dink looks much better now. The floor tiles are drawn, but transparancy does
not yet work. Both the sprites and the objects drawn on top of the floor tiles
overwrite the background with white color.
You are making good progress. Thanks

Summary: HomeSite 5.5 crashes on startup (OLE problem)
Product: Wine
Version: CVS
Platform: PC
URL: http://www.adobe.com/products/homesite/
OS/Version: Linux
Status: NEW
Keywords: regression, download
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-ole
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: hallo(a)michael-kaufmann.ch
CC: rob(a)codeweavers.com
When HomeSite 5.5 starts up, a wizard is shown. After this wizard completes,
HomeSite crashes with an access violation. It is a regression, caused by this
patch: http://www.winehq.com/hypermail/wine-cvs/2005/02/0165.html
HomeSite runs well with native OLE components.
An evaluation version of HomeSite can be downloaded at
http://www.adobe.com/products/homesite/ (free registration required).
I'll attach a log file (created with HomeSite 5.0 which has the same problem).
There are some "stub object not found" messages.

First of all, are you sure it's http://staruml.org ?
The link doesn't work for me, http://www.staruml.com/ does.
MSXML4 is not a prerequisite. I copied native msxml3.dll and msxml3r.dll
to the fake system32 directory and started staruml with
WINEDLLOVERRIDES=msxml3=n wine StarUML
and it seems to work fine.
Wine's implementation of msxml3 is very incomplete and requires substantial
work. Perhaps as a Google SoC project next year:-)

It appears that the Starcraft battle.net screen crash and the Diablo 1 menu
crash is not related to the ddraw lib replacement. I just tested with cvs I
compiled on June 3rd. (before the replacement) This seems to correspond to the
version reported.
Moo2, probably is related to the ddraw rewrite though. I don't know about other
affected apps.

Ragnarok online was reported to be slow before, although then it only affected

simmilar issues in other games, should we create a new bug and mark all

Proposed fix
The issue was that the app passed bad values to BltFast, and in the old ddraw
code those values were filtered out in IDirectDrawSurface::Lock. This patch
adds those checks to IWineD3DSurface::LockRect, and it returns an error if the
rectangle is bad. This error is catched by BltFast which returns an error
itself. This fixed the demo for me(and some other games too :-) ). I sent the
patch already to wine-patches

Yeah, the opengl renderer doesn't really work with a lot 2D apps atm(well,
with no pure 2D app to be honest). It is just enough to make some d3d apps
happy which use 2D blts(Prince of persia 3d and swat3)
I've just hunted a simmilar regression where a BltFast call caused a crash.
The issue was that a bad rectangle was passed to lockrect, and wined3d doesn't
filter that out properly. I've sent a patch to wine-patches to perform sanity
checks on the rectangle and return an error if it is incorrect.

[Original report:

Installing staruml as follows:
WINE=~/wine-git/wine
rm -rf .wine
$WINE notepad
cp MFC42.DLL .wine/drive_c/windows/system32/
$WINE installers/StarUML-5.0-with-cm.exe > log 2>&1

Valgrind reports nothing stunningly informative; here's the log:

I think that ole error refers to msxml4.dll; see

A couple other bug reports refer to it; see bug 3910
and http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?versionId=2720&iTestingId=3597
This is an open source app, so potentially someone could run it in the

Yep, unfortunately the code is pretty reliant on passing and comparing strings
of abitrary 8 bit data.
I've been trying to have a bit of a look into the code for this to see if I can
help out, but a lot of this is pretty new to me, so it's slow going... I
apologise if I therefore say something stupid :)
The message compare functions seem to be treating the data as Unicode data -
shouldn't they be treated as ANSI strings? The code I encountered this problem
on was originally for Windows 95. Did this have Unicode support?
Reading the information on varbstrcmp, am I right in thinking that the LCID is
used to determine whether the strings are Unicode or ANSI? Would the string
compare functions be different if ANSI strings were used?
Thanks for looking into this by the way!

Turning on +vxd shows that the NtDeviceIoControlFile
call comes from DeviceIoControl:
trace:vxd:DeviceIoControl
((nil),8010204c,0x7fb9eff4,12,0x7fb9eff4,12,0x7fb9f00c,(nil))
Anyone know what that particular call is trying to do?
(It's a bit tedious to track down the values from
<winioctl.h>... yeah, I know I should...)

Thanks for the nice test case.
(I had to go find MFC42D.DLL and MFCO42D.DLL to run it, next time please do a
release build.)
(What's supposed to happen when you click on the text in question, btw?
It'd be nice if it did something; that was one could distinguish
between problems showing underlined text, and problems handling clicks.)
I verified that the test program shows the problem even with current
wine from git.
When I click on the "make clickable" button, and run with WINEDEBUG=+richedit,
I get the message
trace:richedit:RichEditANSIWndProc hWnd 0x2002c msg 0444 (EM_SETCHARFORMAT)
00000001 7fb9ec88
Perhaps Matt Finnicum can look at this as part of his Riched20 improvement
project.

Summary: Links arent clickable in CRichEditCtrl with mask
CFM_LINK
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.13.

Priority: P2
Component: test
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: ravinderonline(a)yahoo.com
CC: dank@kegel.com,infyquest@gmail.com
I am working with a Rich Edit Control in my VC++ application. I am changing the
normal text to clickable hypertext link with the help of an event. This
functionality is relevant to my application where user can click on an include
file name and have it opened in one of the other file editors.
To set the hypertext link, I set the mask CFM_LINK as follows, which allows the
clickable links.
CHARFORMAT m_cfLink;
m_cfLink.dwMask = CFM_LINK;
m_cfLink.dwEffects = CFE_LINK;
m_Richer.SetSelectionCharFormat(m_cfLink); //m_Richer is the CRichEditCtrl object
This sample application is working fine under Windows Platform as shown in the
snapshot that mean i am able to convert normal text in to clickable link. But in
case of wine the hypertext does not show as such. All the other character
formatting options work fine under wine.

Jesse, I am afraid Diablo 1 won't let you choose between OpenGL or whatever
else. IMHO it just uses default DDraw renderer and all. May this be switched
per app using some registry key?
BTW, you can always try a hack (from Vincent Povirk which I've tried to "port"
to new DDraw achitecture) to avoid black screen:

I've noticed that some software that have one install disc have this problem but

I had to do a bunch of jiggery-pokery to get
Tomeraider to install, and when I finally ran
it, it aborted with "res is not a registered protocol".
That appears to be a Mozilla ActiveX plugin error, and
is also reported against PartyPoker,
http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?versionId=2133&iTestingId=712
for what it's worth.
It also complained loudly and often:
fixme:ntdll:NtDeviceIoControlFile Unsupported ioctl 8010204c (device=8010
access=0 func=813 method=0)
just like TruePoker is said to,
http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?versionId=2195&iTestingId=3979
(Poker is obviously the best stress test of wine.)
To reproduce, here's the jiggery-pokery I had to do to get it to install:
first, if it's not already in cvs, apply
http://www.winehq.org/pipermail/wine-patches/2006-June/028035.html
then set up a clean environment for testing, with a fake IE registry
key, and a copy of mfc42.dll:
rm -rf .wine
wine notepad

cat >> $HOME/.wine/system.reg <<"_EOF_"

This is a bug in oleaut32. I changed the handling of IDispatch methods for
typelibs to use the MIDL-generated code. The client attempts to connect to the
IDispatch interface on the server-side. However, the server-side of things
doesn't tell the RPC to expose the IDispatch interface, so the binding request
is refused.
I'm not sure about the best way to fix this bug.

periodically changes to invalid colors (eg red, yellow, green), and when I
start the game (with a left click) it gives an error message, there are not
enough memory, or simplay freezes. The Settings Application crashes too.

It occured on loading, although if it was fixed, you probably hit another bug

If you are talking about testing the dwarf2 loading crash I filed
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5493 . Looking at the first pasted trace
in this bug it seems to be about the same error message and looping with a
different trigger. Bug 5493 did not occur until changes were made to dbghelp and
I think it is looking up a 16 bit function.
