The simple fix works for DRI, but not for the official ATI driver. The skybox is
both upside down and right up, and the two versions are drawn to different
sections (so you see both). Probably clipping issues -- but this might describe
a bigger problem.

Thanks Scott, however you maybe interested to know that I _have_ arts installed.
This problem occurs in both kde and gnome, so it also has nothing to do with
whether arts is running. But this has only occured recently for me, so it either
happened when I installed kde, or when I updated to 0.9.13 binary package. I
will let you know what happens with 0.9.14 when it updates.

------- Additional Comments From scott(a)open-vote.org 2006-28-05 18:54 -------
Ok, I'm pretty sure this is a binary package error on my part. Essentially, it
happens when the package was built with arts support, but the user doesn't have
the arts package on their system. Wine then probes for arts, but it isn't
found, and therefore we had a crash.
We can fix this by double-checking in Wine, or we can fix the binary packages.
I'm uploading updated 0.9.14 to the repository, which now have a dependency on
all the packages Wine believes it was built with. This should fix the crashing
problem when it's done.

I just wanted to update that my first crash seems to be a bug in mesa regarding

hope to fix it soon. The second is of course the wine dwarf2 problem which won't
be fixed if I fix mesa but it will go into hiding. =)

On Windows it seems that the GDI SwapBuffers() calls wglSwapBuffers(), and not

Summary: Wine performance lost on some CJK environment
Product: Wine
Version: CVS
Platform: Other
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: minor
Priority: P2
Component: wine-x11driver
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: hzhrong(a)gmail.com
I notice some CJK users complain that wine is too slow to run apps, when
clicking menu, or opening dialog box, it takes too long time to display. And
they said, if killed X input method, wine run fast again.
I haven't meet this problem until I changed X FontPath one day, yes, Wine run
very slowly, got very import performance problem. When I killed X input method,
it's fast again. So I realize it's a XIM related bug.
While reviewing dlls/x11drv/xim.c, in function X11DRV_CreateIC, about line 487,
I see the following code:
fontSet = XCreateFontSet(display,
"*", /*FIXME*/
&list, &count, NULL);
So, it's clear that it cause the problem. Looking for a matched "*" X fontSet is
ofen fast if there is no X core font lacked, otherwise it will take a long time.
In my case, in zh_CN.GBK or zh_CN.UTF-8 locale, X core font *-gbk-0 are missing.
When I add these fonts back, the problem resolved.
For a solution, I suggest to use "fixed" instead of "*", since modern X input
method apps doesn't use XFontSet anymore. Change to:
fontSet = XCreateFontSet(display,
"fixed",
&list, &count, NULL);

I used to setup the following reg keys (yes, copy&paste from MS Windows),
[Software\\Microsoft\\Windows NT\\CurrentVersion\\FontLink\\SystemLink] 1135414249
"Tahoma"=str(7):"simsun.ttc,SimSun\0msgothic.ttc,MS UI
Gothic\0mingliu.ttc,PMingLiU\0"
and set the desktop font to Tahoma.
In my zh_CN.UTF-8 locale, latin chars use font Tahoma, while mutibytes chars use
SimSun, all look fine.
But these settings don't work as expected in recent version of Wine. In
zh_CN.UTF-8 locale, mutibytes chars should use SimSun, but in fact, it uses MS
UI Gothic.
That's because Wine use localised font family now, so in function
find_face_from_filename(dlls/gdi/freetype.c), if we try to look for family name
SimSun, it will fail.
The English family name of the truetype font simsun.ttc is SimSun, and localised
family name is "宋体 (\x5b8b\x4f53)". Wine saves localised family name but lost
English family name SimSun.

This still does not work in gnome with Wine 0.9.13, however I would like to
point out that the new Linux version of Picasa (picasa.google.com) can do it.
Seems odd that they can do it and we can't.
I ran the picasa version of wine taskmgr:
WINEPREFIX="/home/user/.picasa" /opt/picasa/wine/bin/wine taskmgr
and it installed the systray icon perfectly in the gnome system tray.
Google provide a tarball of the exact wine source version they used for picasa.
The only explanation I can come to is that they way they do it isn't the Right
Way to do it. If not, I hope this info helps someone.

Using Shareaza (http://www.shareaza.com/), I can only get the splash screen, and
other images in the program to show up when I have the correct working
directory. For example:
---
cd .wine/drive_c/Program Files/Shareaza/
wine shareaza.exe
---
Works fine, all images in the program are displayed correctly.
However, using:
---
wine "c:\program files\shareaza\shareaza.exe"
---
(like the *.desktop file points to) images are not displayed, and a few minor
display glitches occur.
Wine should check the directory of the executable when looking for the pictures.

I can confirm this on Ubuntu Dapper release candidate, Wine 0.9.13 (winehq
build) crashes winecfg when I click on the audio tab.
Workaround (for me):
---
cd /usr/lib/wine
sudo mv winearts.drv.so winearts.drv.so.2
---
This could be due to the fact that I recently installed kubuntu with apt-get
(for non-ubuntu users: Ubuntu allows switching between Ubuntu and Kubuntu
without hastles, because they both use the same repositories)

You should be able to run Wine from the source dir:

That should give us better backtraces. If not, you'll need to do the same trick

Confirming. It works fine in wine-20050830 (haven't tried newer versions yet).
If you could do a regressiontest to track down the patch that broke this, it's
likely to be fixed sooner. Thx

I run into this problem with some games, too (e.g. Wing Command 5, Blade Runner,
Popolous 3).
Currently I have my sound preferences on alsa using full hardware accel - 22k
sample rate and 8b per sample.
This leads to the intro videos being played at a fast speed and then suddenly
hanging. I also tried some other settings but at least the hangs always occur.

Summary: Arena Chess GUI (V1.99 Beta 2) freezes solid when menu
drops down
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.13.
Platform: PC

Status: UNCONFIRMED

Load Arena Chess GUI V1.99 Beta 2 into Wine. Running on Fedora Core 5 with
latest updates applied. This problem has existed for many months now.
Start Arena. The "Options" menu has an item named "Colour Scheme". When you use
the mouse to move down the list of items, as you move down the highlight freezes
as you hit "Colour Scheme". Now, before doing force quit, click to another
virtual desktop and you will see that same "Options" menu displayed erroneously
on those desktops.
Now, force quit and restart Arena. You cannot ever use the "Colour Scheme" menu
item in Arena with Wine (until this bug is fixed I suppose!).
You can download Arena 1.99 Beta2 at: www.playwitharena.com

As Jason Spiro shows with the verbose log of how windows actually installs
americas army it does the following
his quote "Notice that MSI did a ChangeMedia to accessor.cab then did *nothing
whatsoever* then did another ChangeMedia to
Sounds.cab and started extracting it."
Disk1.cab = diskId 1
animatns.cab = diskId 2
Briefing.cab = diskId 3
sfvideos.cab = diskId 21
accessor.cab = diskId 22
Sounds.cab = diskId 23
If you upload the full log you will see that the log doesn't start at
accessor.cab, it probably is preceded with sfvideos.cab which is diskId 21, then
it goes to diskId 22, which is our accessor.cab, when it does the changeMedia to
diskId 22 it then does the following ( if LastSequence of diskId is less than
that of the LastSequence of previous diskId then go to next diskId ), which is
why it appears to "do nothing whatsoever". It then increments DiskId to 23 and
starts working with Sounds.cab.
Wine just sequentially goes through the list of files and then tries to work
with the media on a per file basis, which is why it starts with accessor.cab.
I'm not really up to snuff with my C programming, but if you want to help
rewrite the code Jason Spiro, it should query the media table, order by DiskId
and check the last sequence against the previous diskId.
enlighten me and upload the full msiexec verbose log from how windows actually
installs it, and I bet it starts with Disk1.cab and works its way up the list.

I am trying to get Derive 6.10 working.
Just installing Derive 6.10 on a fresh wine installation. There is a problem
with the font in the input. Every glyph is just a black square. See attached
screenshot.
I ran Derive with WINEDEBUG+fonts and found out that it tried to use Tahoma a
few times. Therefore I copied Tahoma from a windows installation to
drive_c/windows/fonts/. Now the glyphs are showing; but some are bold and other
regular and after a few seconds I get an X Error. See attached backtraces and
screenshot.
What else could I try to get this working?

extrem ugly "never use it" gcc4.0.* patch
David Ronis:
I think you are using gcc4.0.* too
its weird but AFAIK this bug only appaers with gcc4.0.*
3.4.* and 4.1.* works fine
this patch should fix it, but it is _very_ ugly, you should not use it!
it is _mutch_ better to update to gcc 4.1.1
I will upgrade my gcc to 4.1.1 next week =)

The behaviour is about the same in wine 0.9.14
Using 2000 as version emulated the installer does not crash but it fails when it
actually starts installing the selected components. BRANDING.CAB fails to be
installed.
Using Win98 we get the same behaviour as on 13 which is the message box
described previously.

The game "Grand Prix Legends" also suffers from the
dsound:DSOUND_MixOne underrun on sound buffer
ntdll:RtlpWaitForCriticalSection
errors. Thereafter the game's graphics have a very low
frame rate and the sound is just a continous tone.
ie the game is unplayable.
If I remember correctly this problem first arose sometime
in early 2004. Prior to this the game was playable.
I don't know if this is any help to the developers but
"Legends" stretches/contracts a wave file to create the
engine sounds. The games in the comments above seem to use
the same method.

The "fixme" should not the Reason for a crash.
When the output prints something about "Assertion `bpp != 0' failed",
then this is a duplicate of Bug #3774.
Changing the Setting in "Video" -> "Output modules" to "Windows GDI"
should play your Video in this case.
DirectX has the Assertion and OpenGL overwrite the Window (See Bug #2398)

Patch correcting the problem (enabled by solution of bug 4960)
This is a smaller patch dealing only with this bug's problem.
It uses the undocumented SWP flag for window state change introduced with the
solution for bug 4960. It defines it as a constant and uses it in default
window procedure's WM_WINDOWPOSCHANGED processing, to detect that a window
changed state, and send WM_SIZE in that case.
Additionally, it enhances checking for todo flag within dlls/user/tests/msg.c
test, since otherwise a message sequence marked with "todo" starts producing
errors (because currently there is no checking for todo at defwinproc flag
comparing), which it should not. In fact, the situation in the test improves:
the sequence of expected messages actually sent increases, however that leads
at coincidence at the second part of the test:
expected
...0x46 by defwinproc, 0x83 by defwinproc, 0x47 by defwinproc, 0x46, 0x83,
0x47;
actual
...0x46, 0x83, 0x47.
The problem is that some (defwinproc) messages are not sent, but the message
comparer in the test thinks that messages are correct, but have incorrect
sender. (A solution for this is included in the bigger patch earlier sent.)

MSIDIFF dump of America's Army.msi (zipped)
I used MSIDIFF to decompile "America's Army.msi" and "accessor.cab" is only
mentioned in the .msi file one time. There is a row in the media table with
these values:
DiskId="22"
LastSequence="0"
DiskPrompt=""
Cabinet="accessor.cab"
VolumeLabel=""
Source=""
The problem lies within the way wine is installing things currently. It reads
every file from the file table in MSI and then queries the Media table to ready
the media it installs from, order by LastSequence. It should read from the Media
table first and ready the media with the sort order by DiskId and then try to
install the files in order by sequence from the file table. LastSequence of 0 as
in the case of Americas Army is currently faking the installer into thinking
accessor.cab is the first entry on the media table. In reality it falls in
DiskId 22. It should be skipped as if read by order of DiskId It would check to
see if LastSequence of 0 in disk 22 was greater than the LastSequence of DiskId
21, which it is not. This is what is for sure what is causing these cabinet errors.

I meant to add:
This seems, at least for me, to prevent the Lotus Notes window from disappearing.
On the other hand, using just one Desktop and multiple Pages and clicking in the
FvwmPager also does the same thing. But because of my odd setup with KDE panel
(kicker) and FvwmPager, I put Notes on an entirely different desktop for my own
convenience. Also, clicking on the Lotus Notes taskbar button in KDE panel also
seems to work ok, it doesn't hide Notes when I switch to it or from it by
clicking another application's button in the taskbar.
Ultimately though, sounds like a Wine bug since this didn't exist before.

A possible workaround for this with FVWM, although I haven't extensively tested it:
Use multiple Desktops, each with multiple Pages. Put Lotus Notes on a page in a
desktop, and leave it there. Use the other desktop (and all its pages) for all
your normal work, and switch over to the other desktop when you need to access
Lotus Notes, by clicking in the FvwmPager module. Or if you're like me and have
the KDE panel (kicker) running, you can have KDE's desktop viewer there which
shows desktops only (no pages), and click in that.

Dear Tom,
after several hours of analysing, I have found a source of problem.
please edit
wine/dlls/opengl32/Makefile
and add
-L GLU
to EXTRALIBS. After this modiffication wine got compiled. libGL do NOT contain
gluTessVertex. Even when I upgraded OpenGL, the problem persists. May be, that
peoples have some libGL that is merged with libGLU, but when I compiled Mesa by
standard way, it generates libGL and libGLU.
Please do something to prevent anybody else to fall into this.

COM ports if only symlinks are created under ~/.wine/dosdevices. I have to
manually add the SerialComm entries to system.reg, then the ports are

wonder why any winedbg specific features isn't just stuffed into gdb..)

Maybe it was just this that I needed to do to get a correct backtrace..

I'm impressed..
As per my request for help on wine-devel, I was unable to get a backtrace.
Would you mind sharing with us how you did?

Great, thanks!
I see that your patch made it in in a modified form:
http://source.winehq.org/git/?p=wine.git;a=commitdiff;h=ff8306882085eab17da…
It's in 0.9.14, and I've tested with that, and Trillian doesn't crash like
this anymore, so I'm closing this bug.
(Now the main window is invisible, perhaps related to alpha blending as well -
I'll open a new bug about that after playing around some more.)
Thanks again :-).

Thanks for the input, I was running at 16bpp and so I did try switching it over
to 24bpp but the problem is the same still. Thanks for the suggestion though.
By switching to 24bpp your errors were gone and the program loaded fine? That
would be nice, I've been trying everything with no luck Please let me know if
you come up with any other ideas.

To clarify this, this is how the installer is supposed to work ...
First read from the media table with sort order by DiskId, each disk id is a
new disk to install from .
In the case of America's Army DiskId 1 is disk1.cab
The installer then starts extracting from Disk1.cab until it reaches the
LastSequence # on the disk. Disk1.Cab has the LastSequence of 6 which means
the installer should pull files off of Disk1.Cab in order by sequence key in
the file table and should stop at sequence 6.
Then it moves to DiskId 2 Animatns.cab. The installer should then extract
files from Animatns.cab in order by sequence number read from the file table
until last sequence of 14.
The DiskId sequence goes up to 25. which means there are 25 different cab
files to read from.
DiskId 22 is accessor.cab, but the last sequence on accessor.cab is 0, which
means it will pull files from accessor.cab until it reaches 0, which it should
start at 0, so it will never pull anything from accessor.cab. I'm not sure
what purpose this serves to have a dummy DiskId.

It appears the actual file sequnce is read from the file table. The Media table
should be sorted by DiskId to get the correct sequence of install medium, then
each file should be read from the media from by the order of sequence from the
file table, where as the LastSequence shows the LastSequence number of the file
on the disk. So accessor.cab is LastSequence 0, and its #22 in DiskId, which
means it should be the last thing read off of the MSI media table and probably
shouldn't have anything done with it as the LastSequence number is 0, which
means there is nothing on DiskId22 to install before it.

msi dump with sort order by DiskId
when installing with order by DiskId as recommended by MSDN the install
proceeds further and dies at trying to extract files to the temp folder. What
is strange is the trace I get from msi when it lists the SQL statement.
trace:msi:MSI_DatabaseOpenViewW L"SELECT * FROM `Media` WHERE `LastSequence` >=
611 ORDER BY `DiskId`" 0x7fb8f794
Changing the Order By to DiskId should have no effect on the LastSequence >= 0
portion of the sql statement, it should just change the sort order, here it
says 611 which shows there is a flaw in the trace message code.

EA, all I saw was one file, MSI637.tmp.
spiro@debian$ file MSI637.tmp
MSI637.tmp: Microsoft Office Document
It's 5.4 megabytes and is a copy of the AA installer on my machine too. I bet
it's an Microsoft OLE archive, sometimes also known as a Microsoft OLE compound
document.
I did not see your "The Windows Installer service cannot update one or more
protected Windows files." message.
Now, a series of questions: Which winver are you set to? Does Wine even
implement Windows File Protection? What generated that message, winemsi or some
executable code inside the America's Army.MSI file? How can I see the same file
you saw? Does the file only appear during the duration of the time winemsi is
running and it's autodeleted afterwards or something?
And why does the message not refer to accessor.cab? IIRC, I have never seen an
accessor.cab file anywhere in any Windows in my life.
Sorry to ask so many questions. :-)

Yes I do know why you got the trace you did, the trace log output is wrong. I
compiled wine by changing the LastSequence to 1 in files.c, the trace of the
LastSequence is still >=1, so the trace message programming is errored. Upon
changing it to 1 it stopped looking for accessor.cab which is the first entry
in the media table. According to MSDN it should be >=0. Regardless the output of
the MSI trace still read >=1 so it is not outputting the proper SQL statement in
the trace. It should be reading the accessor.cab value anyhow as zero is the
first entry of the media table.

------- Additional Comments From T.Bonner(a)freesurf.ch 2006-24-05 17:19 -------
During a programming work, I ran into a similar problem: loaded an external
bitmap for the toolbar (e.g. size was 64x15 for 4 buttons), and I erroneously
used the following code:
hwndTB = CreateToolbarEx
(hwndParent, /* paranet window */
dwToolBarStyles, /* window styles flags */
1, /* child ID */
14, /*15,*/ /* number of images in the bitmap */
GetModuleHandle(0), /*HINST_COMMCTRL,*/ /* bitmap resource */
(int) MAKEINTRESOURCE(300), /* uiBitmap ,*/ /* bitmap id */
ptbb, /* button array */
iNumButtons, /* number of elements in array */
16, 16, /* button size */
16, 16, /* bitmap size */
sizeof (TBBUTTON)
);
Here, the bitmap size y-value is wrong (I assumed the graphics was 16 in height,
but actually it was 15). Windows had no problems with this wrong value, but in
wine this resulted in a slightly wrong display. So I corrected the code and
everything went fine. In this sense, windows showed a more robust behavior to
wrong bitmap size values (although wine may be more correct here), and maybe
this is also the case here (or I should do a new bug report).

You do not need IE to install Office 2000. It installed just fine as-is with
wine-0.9.9 - wine-0.9.10 (don't remember which one I used).
BTW please upgrade to wine-0.9.14. It fixes few known regressions related to
installers. But it might not fix all of them.
And one more thing, Wine does not directly support installation of IE.
I don't think it would be feasible to create special overrides for
GetFileVersionInfo. Wine needs to keep installers from wanting to install any
native dlls. This can be archived only by having the latest version possible.

Using wine 0.9.13 with a brand new fake drive (deleted .wine and ran wineboot)
when trying to run IE5 I get the following:
1. Win2000 set as version results in a crash after choosing the installation type
2. Win98 set as version results in the reported message.
No tweaks are done to the dlloverrides a brand new default drive is used.
On another note CrossOver Office is also using win98 as the version.
I also can install and run Office 2000 using a win98 version and several folder
renames or files added but using 0.9.12 or 0.9.13 wine.
I thought that the wine emulation is supposed to be valid for GetFileVersionInfo
also for built in dlls. Or at least I find that it would be an useful thing. Not
sure yet how we can achieve it though :(

If you have access to a copy of HL2, could you or a friend run the installer
from inside Windows in logged mode?
First, you must uninstall HL2. Then click Start -> Run. Type the following and
press Enter:
cmd
A DOS prompt will appear. Type these three commands, pressing Enter after each
command:
c:
cd \windows\temp
msiexec d:\media\hl2_1\hl2.msi /qn /l*v winmsiverbose.log
This bit is not crucial: It would also be nice if you could uninstall and
install again using the command msiexec d:\media\hl2_1\hl2.msi /qn /l* winmsi.log
Then send us the file c:\windows\temp\winverbose.log. If it is more than 500KB,
please zip it *with gzip* before you send it. (Many browsers automatically
decompress gzipped text on the fly for display purposes.) Thanks!

The application the crash output is from is that dx9 sample, which can be
downloaded. Also, you can notice that the application is crashing first, and
then it gets an assertion reading the dwarf2 information from r200_dri.so. So it
will be hard to debug the actual crash of all these apps until this dwarf2
problem is fixed.

The split of the Windows Desktop Update from the IE browser has been

This is due to the win2k version of the shell32.dll returned. The Office 2k
installation is done emulating a win98.
The code should return a version depending the process version and the emulated
version by choosing the file version for the lowest of process and emulated version.

Confirming. I guess it's due to not fully implemented gdi32.ExtTextOutW, as this
message:
fixme:font:ExtTextOutW flags ETO_NUMERICSLOCAL | ETO_NUMERICSLATIN | ETO_PDY
unimplemented
is not present when run under win98, and there it works fine indeed.

I get the exact same thing as far as console output, using 0.9.9 from Ubuntu
Dapper (but I also tried the most recent version) and I know the cause. It
outputs this because your Xserver is using 16bpp... on my computer it works fine
at 24bpp. (I tried once at 15bpp and it did the same thing, so I assume that
there is a bug in wine assuming the wrong pixel depth? Don't know. Studio 8
apps work fine in windows at 16bpp)
Unfortunately, I have become addicted to my compiz eyecandy, and on my video
card I have to run at 16bpp to get compiz to work correctly, so I'd love seeing
this fixed...
