Summary: unhandled exception when playing Starcraft
Product: Wine
Version: 20050725
Platform: PC-x86-64
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-binary
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: minilek(a)gmail.com
The bug is triggered when I load the battle.net login screen for Starcraft Brood
Wars while using wine. It causes wine to abort, and so Starcraft closes too.
The full trace can be found at http://web.mit.edu/minilek/www/wine_bug.
The last few fixmes before the error:
fixme:ras:RasEnumConnectionsA (0x5a2000a4,0x55bcf948,0x55bcf94c),stub!
fixme:ras:RasEnumConnectionsA RAS support is not implemented! Configure program
to use LAN connection/winsock instead!
wine: Unhandled exception (thread 0009), starting debugger...
This battle.net login screen is the only screen that causes wine to crash -- I
can load other menus as well as play the game single player just fine without
crashing.
I'm running Ubuntu Breezy, linux 2.6.12-10-amd64-generic.

Status: UNCONFIRMED

I'm trying to use "Marco Polo Großer Reiseplaner 2005/2006" with Wine 0.9.13 on
Gentoo Linux. To use it, I ran travel\setup.exe from the DVD and the setup just
stops, before the "real thing" starts. Please see
http://www.myimg.de/?img=BildschirmfotoWinedesktopSeaa8.png
In the terminal window from which I started wine, I get:

As you saw on the screenshot, I setup wine to use a Desktop size of 640×480. I
also set the Windows version to Windows 98. But the error also happens, when I
remove my ~/.wine directory and just use the default settings.
Meanwhile, I downgraded to 0.9.12., and there the installer works just fine.

I am posting this issue here per mike_m. I suspect the row in the Media table
that mentions accessor.cab is being selected when it shouldn't be, and that if
it were not selected this bug wouldn't have appeared at all.
Wine-msi is executing the SQL statement "SELECT * FROM `Media` WHERE
`LastSequence` >= 1 ORDER BY `LastSequence`". That select statement should not
be selecting the row that mentions DiskId="22" LastSequence="0" DiskPrompt=""
Cabinet="accessor.cab" VolumeLabel="" Source="".
The only line in a +all log of an America's Army install that mentions the Media
table is:
trace:msi:MSI_DatabaseOpenViewW L"SELECT * FROM `Media` WHERE `LastSequence` >=
1 ORDER BY `LastSequence`" 0x7fc2f794
But, because the install fails later, I suspect the row is being
selected despite that LastSequence is 0. How else could Wine-msi think that a
file named accessor.cab exists?
(Background info: There is a full MSIDIFF dissasembly of America's Army.msi
attached to bug 4533; I saw the row (DiskId="22" LastSequence="0" DiskPrompt=""
Cabinet="accessor.cab" VolumeLabel="" Source="") in comment#5. I confirmed that
that was the only row in the entire MSI file mentioning a file "accessor.cab"
using the WiX decompiler. I am using a copy of wine from CVS that I checked out
about a week ago built on Debian Etch. wine --version returns 0.9.12.)

Tom, the only cab files on my Dell OEM WinXP CD are: \i386\mmssetup.cab
modem.cab osc.cab sp1.cab win.cab winsys.cab winsys32.cab
\i386\win9xmig\mapi\...\80.cab 801.cab 802.cab 803.cab 98map.cab 98omi.cab
40.cab 40a.cab 40sp3.cab 40sp4.cab 50sp1.cab 50sp2.cab \support\tools\deploy.cab
support.cab sup_pro.cab sup_srv.cab
There are a bunch of ca_ files too but none of them are named accessor.ca_.
Also, a Google search for accessor.cab finds only Wine-related issues.
I think that ignoring the return value isn't dangerous, though perhaps we should
print a trace or msi:err message when the return value of extract_cabinet_file
is or isn't "success".

The blackness only occurs in the windows for this particular game.
If I set the gamma for the system = 10 (the rest of the screen is unreadable

If it is a gamma issue with wine how do I configure it?

You dont search for the regression in one file. You do the cvs checkout by date
for the entire tree, and then when you find the day, you do it by time. Once
you get it narrowed down, the file and commit become clear because that will be
the only commit between when it was working and when it stopped.

What winver is being used? IIRC accessor.cab is a windows cab file, so if the
msi is asking for it, it is probably trying to install some sort of windows
accessory, which is why it dies when it cant use the accesory that is supposed
to be there. Mike is right that we could just return success, BUT it isnt proper.

Looks like wine is looking at fstab (it needs to look at mtab for mounted
volumes). If it is working with unmounted drives it needs to be either HAL
aware or get drive info from the kernel. /etc/fstab is not a canonical place to
find drive information on modern dynamic systems. Please file this upstream
with Wine.

The dialog box still says "Connection Error" and "Could not authenticate to

winecfg or changed any Wine settings.

The MapSource update released in March 2006 (6.10.2) completely fails to work.
This error comes up on startup:
App: MapSource

OS: Windows 2000 Service Pack 4
Processor: Pentium Pro or Pentium II, RAM: 1552256
AFX_COMBOBOX.HPP-122-6.10.2.0
Version 6.9.1 still works relatively well, although Garmin no longer provides
the installer on their website.
If anyone is willing to work on this problem, I can provide a tarball with
version 6.9.1 plus registry entries and other files needed to start the program up.
Depending on a number of factors (mainly if I have enough extra cash), I might
even be willing to purchase an eTrex Legend (the same unit that I use) for the
person who solves this bug.
I can be contacted on gmail.com; my address is akihana (at the mentioned domain).
Oh, and if someone ends up reading this -- please change the Component to
wine-ports since this is really a serial comm bug as opposed to a filesystem
issue. Please also update the version; I can comfirm that this problem still
exists in Wine 0.9.13.

Summary: [MSI] I suspect a row in the Media table is being
selected when it shouldn't be (America's Army)
Product: Wine
Version: CVS
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-msi
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: jasonspiro3+wine(a)gmail.com
CC: neftune(a)gmail.com
Wine-msi is executing the SQL statement "SELECT * FROM `Media` WHERE
`LastSequence` >= 1 ORDER BY `LastSequence`". That select statement should not
be selecting the row that mentions DiskId="22" LastSequence="0" DiskPrompt=""
Cabinet="accessor.cab" VolumeLabel="" Source="".
The only line in a +all log of an America's Army install that mentions the Media
table is:
trace:msi:MSI_DatabaseOpenViewW L"SELECT * FROM `Media` WHERE `LastSequence` >=
1 ORDER BY `LastSequence`" 0x7fc2f794
But, because the install fails later (bug 5139), I suspect the row is being
selected despite that LastSequence is 0. How else could Wine-msi think that a
file named accessor.cab exists?
Background info: There is a full MSIDIFF dissasembly of America's Army.msi
attached to bug 4533; I saw the row (DiskId="22" LastSequence="0" DiskPrompt=""
Cabinet="accessor.cab" VolumeLabel="" Source="") in comment#5. I confirmed that
that was the only row in the entire MSI file mentioning a file "accessor.cab"
using the WiX decompiler. I am using a copy of wine from CVS that I checked out
about a week ago built on Debian Etch. wine --version returns 0.9.12.

The harder way would be to realize that we don't need to copy any files from

Question: Why is wine crashing on accessor.cab?
Answer: Because there is no such file as accessor.cab anywhere in the America's
Army distribution, so it never should have been extracted.
Here is my long-winded explanation.
I extracted americasarmy260_aafiles.exe to a directory on Windows. Then, I ran:
msiexec.exe /i "America's Army.msi" /qn /l*v verbose.log (/i means install; /qn
does a silent install; /l* means log all operations, v means verbose)
Notice this direct excerpt from the msiexec log:
...
MSI (s) (D0:C0): Executing op: SetTargetFolder(Folder=E:\Program Files\America's

I can upload the full log if anyone likes. Notice that MSI did a ChangeMedia to
accessor.cab then did *nothing whatsoever* then did another ChangeMedia to
Sounds.cab and started extracting it. There is no accessor.cab file. It should
correspond to Program Files\America's Army\Accessories but the only files in
there are ArcadeInstallFull203-google.exe, xfire_installer_17171.exe, and some
DirectX stuff, all of which are stored in *other* CAB files.

Summary: Black Screen on Great Battles - Hanibal
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.13.
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: major
Priority: P2
Component: wine-binary
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: gobnat(a)optusnet.com.au
I recently acquired a copy of the (somewhat old) game Great Battles - Hannibal.
I loaded the game into SuSE 9.1 using the default wine shipped with SuSE 9.1
(2004- <something something>). The game ran and displayed graphics faithfully
(well, at least as far as I could tell - see below)
The game requires the CD to be in the drive, and I had trouble configuring that
wine version to properly mount and identify the CD, so all I could get was the
intro screen and the network client. These displayed properly.
So I decided to upgrade to the most recent version of wine. That fixed my CD Rom
configuration issues, but now all the screens are (not quite but almost)
entirely black. I have tried this with SuSE 9.1 (where a very dim outline is
faintly visible against the black - (enough to find the quit button)) and FC5
(where the screen is entirely black - can't even find the quit button!) and have
received the same results.
So, the problem has been introduced somewhere between 2004 and now. I can't
find where old wine versions are, otherwise I would try them. GB-H
installs/uses DirectX 5.
I saw there was a patch for a similar problem listed for Diablo. I tried to
apply it but it doesn't seem to have made any difference.

Many Thanks Ulrich for the post. I thought that the developers has forgotten the
Corel issus completly. Thanks also much for the hint with the ole32.
I played a bit around with the other required dlls for 0.9.13 because printing
is already not possible in Corel 9 in case of Corel directly creates postscript
code which is sent to the printer "as it is" and is not spooled by cups. For
this case PDF-Export is really important. Its seems that there are my buts in
the msvcrt etc. libraries of wine. So the whole winedlloverrides to get Corel
working with copy/paste and pdf export is:
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="ole32,msvcrt,msvcrt40,msvcrt20,msvcrt,msvcirt=n"
The dlls can come from a win98se cdrom (with license)

Bug 5429 had +ole turned on, which showed
err:rpc:RPCRT4_OpenBinding failed to bind
which might be material. i.e. maybe this isn't an msi bug.

BTW: Be sure to check your drivers and if you are running in DRI/GLX mode .
You can do so by running glxinfo, if it reports it is using Mesa Indirect GLX
then that can be very likely the cause.

Do not seem to fail here on Gentoo with Wine 0.9.13
with version 1.13f of StarCraft or StarCraft: Broodwar
also Demo 1.01 of StarCraft works
I do not know is this issue Wine issue or can it be reproduced at all so you
could check that you system is OK and if it is make regression testing to see
what will cause this crash.
I am sure some Wine version should run StarCraft on battle.net since it's been
working here for years.

But I did try compiling Wine 0.9 to see if it still worked there but I couldn't
get it installed right or somethin, does anyone know where I can find an

Are you running games with "WINEDEBUG=-all wine <prog.exe>"?
This should suppress errors and speed up your game.

This isn't a duplicate of 633.
I think Roland's suspicions of StorageImpl_Commit are correct. Implementing this
function may fix this bug.
As a work around try installing dcom95 and setting WINEDLLOVERRIDES="ole32=n".
That should get you going for now.

4294967295 is -1, so yes, the shader failed to compile. We do print a FIXME if
the shader fails to compile, but usually that happens long before
drawStridedFast is called, so it's not obvious the two are connected. We should
probably detect -1 shaders, print something, and perhaps just skip enabling the
relevant vertex/fragment program.

Because I had moved the msvcrtd.dll file around a bit, I decided to delete and
re-install the game to make sure that everything was working as it was supposed
to. Upon reinstalling it, I ran the game with: WINEDLLOVERRIDES="msvcrtd=n" wine
RubiesLauncher.exe and I got into the login screen and could log in my username
and password. Unfortunately the mouse seems to continuously recenter itself in
the center of the screen (similar to But 1410 (I also have this same problem
with Evil Geinus)
I also ran: WINEDLLOVERRIDES="msvcrtd=b;dinput=n" WINEDEBUG=+msvcrt,+relay wine
Rubies.exe but got that msvcrtd error again. Changing it to:
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="msvcrtd=n" WINEDEBUG=+msvcrt,+relay wine Rubies.exe did work,
however, but I'm not sure where the log file is stored.

Vitaliy, thanks for your comments. What do you mean exactly with "copy
everything over to default "c:" drive" ?
Windows is installen on a ntfs partition which I can mount read-only. This is
the reason why I am using a fat32 partition: there I can read and write files
both under Linux and under Windows. I could of course put the application on a
fake windows partition (such as ~/.wine/drive_c) bit then I would not be able
to access it from windows.

I've made some tracing (+tid,+font,+loaddll,+process,+module) for both BAD and
GOOD conditions (using some installer app, named "setup.exe").
Then unified (replaced by some wildcards) handles in both log files and diffed
them. Attaching the result.
Seems in a GOOD case "winex11.drv" is loaded earlier second time (still by
setup.exe)--just before launched explorer.exe starts loading "user32.dll". In
a BAD case this happens later--when explorer.exe has "gdi.exe" loaded.
If full traces are needed, just ask for.

patch which makes Diablo menu happy under Wine 0.9.13
Michał Kazior discovered [6], that patch from Vincent Povirk [7] makes
Diablo run ok under Wine using default cfg. Actually, I've tested this
and trimmed the patch down to one-liner. Attaching it and including
inline for a review:

I see the same bug, both with Skype versions 2.5 and 2.0. Wine version 0.9.13 from the Debian/Ubuntu package repository at http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/
Command line (running under a normal user, not as root):
$ wine .wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Skype/Phone/Skype.exe > Skype.Output 2>&1
Terminal output in attachment (I've cleaned it slightly, removing a couple of hundred lines of "fixme:bitblt:X11DRV_BitBlt"

After the submit 17b13bdc07dd477399a66a44ebf0c773032135bb [*] (gdi: Support for
loading fonts from the build directory) I get garbage drawn on one some controls
in some newly created windows.
If my box is under some load (spitting out lots of traces and being low on
memory) sometimes text gets rendered OK. Text on all other static controls
appears OK in any case. If I redraw window, garbage (or at least most of it)
disappears.
I guess some race condition was introduced by this patch.

This one line change will fix the upside down skybox. It basically disables the

tell so we can analyze how to make a better fix.
I wonder if this problem was caused by wined3d merges a while back.

what I wrote was some prefix for the command line you mention in the first
message ("wine RubiesLauncher.exe") so the whole command would be:
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="msvcrtd=b;dinput=n" WINEDEBUG=+msvcrt,+relay wine Rubies.exe
Sorry for not noticing you're novice here :) and thanks for a bug reporting.
Louis:
well, the game log says exception occures in ntdll:
| [***Unknown exception type***]
| in module ntdll.dll at 0073:7ffa711c.
| Exception handler called in main thread.
... so IMHO ntdll relays (before err:msvcrt:MSVCRTD_operator_new_dbg) are still
interesting to look at. Thanks.

Hi Jon, i just saw that this games comes with its own msvcrtd.dll. So no need to
download that one (better remove the downloaded one from
~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/). just do (copy & paste)
cd ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Rubies\ of\ Eventide/
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="msvcrtd=n" wine RubiesLauncher.exe
That should get you into the login screen. Does that work?

Yes, Star Trek: Bridge Commander is affected by this bug. The "fake" pointer it
creates hardly moves at all without a patch similar to the proposed one.
Several people in the BC clan I play with sometimes (|SoK|) use a similar patch
that I put together for them a month back or so, apparently to no ill effect on
other games. Basically every time BC polls the cursor, then warps it back to
the center and moves its fake cursor on the screen (it acquires in relative
mode, and fakes absolute mode for the menus only). This makes wine's code
(which only triggers every 10ms) think that it hasn't moved (since it's been
warped back a dozen times since the last 10ms interval), and wine never reports
any movement except for in the tiny gap between the last warp before the 10ms
interval, and the interval itself.

exactly sure what you would like me to enter here. I tried running
"WINEDLLOVERRIDS="msvcrtd=b;dinput=n" WINEDEBUG=+msvcrt,+relay" and
"WINEDLLOVERRIDS="msvcrtd=b;dinput=n" WINEDEBUG=+msvcrt,+relay Rubies.exe". In
the first case nothing seemed to happen and in the second case I got an error
saying something about Rubies.exe command not found. (I figured you didn't mean
the second, but just wanted to make sure. I had tried both commands before
copying any errors down so the 'Wine errors' attachment came after running both
commands. It is far from having output in the thousands, though, so I figured
that I'm still not doing it the right way.

* Jon Rosen writes:

This is about allocation of _CRT_BLOCK type of a block on a heap:
$ grep -i block.*2 include/msvcrt/crtdbg.h
| #define _CRT_BLOCK 2
And this is written by [1]:
| An allocation must never allocate, reallocate, or free any block of CRT type.
I guess this is a typo and MSDN guys meant "An application" here. So it would
be nice to see, what is calling this operator.
Can anyone, please, try running app with
WINEDLLOVERRIDS="msvcrtd=b;dinput=n" WINEDEBUG=+msvcrt,+relay
set and attaching tail of the log to this bug report? (lets say ~1000 lines
before the crash)
If this is called from the app, we'll need to make some tests on Windows and to
implement missing functionality to conform new tests, IMO.

HL highly depends on OLE Components. I could resolve some of the problems by
using native libs (eek I know but what can I do if the functionality IŽm looking
for throws a FIXME and then an error?).
I had to replace IMM32, OLEAUT32, OLE32 (not sure here), WSOCK32, WS2_32,
WS2HELP, RPCRT4 (this fixed the 430 error) mentioned here, the call is simply
not implemented and according to user "vitamin" (IRC) OLE will probably never be
supportet. Right now I am stuck with an "Out of Memory" error right after
loading mswinsck.ocx "vitamin" mentioned it looks like a non-registered
component. I ran regsvr32.exe with the ocx but no luck. Thats the status... any
comments?

My quick try at using the right heap functions
I take it back. At first I forgot to zero the memory; that caused
Visual Basic to barf on the very first allocation.
Zeroing the memory brought me back to the original
problem, i.e. vb barfing as soon as we try to resize a safearray.
I'm attaching my current try. I'm pretty sleepy, so this might be wrong,
but it does get rid of one FIXME comment in a principled way.

According to
http://blogs.msdn.com/oldnewthing/archive/2004/07/05/173226.aspx
there are convenience functions CoTaskMem{Alloc,Realloc,Free}
which can be used instead of calling CoGetMalloc and using that interface.
And indeed those get used quite a bit in Wine's ole and oleaut32 code.
So I tried the obvious patch, but now things fall over much earlier.
I'll attach it as food for thought.

ours doesn't. And, surprise suprise, in our dlls/oleaut/safearray.c, one finds
the comment
/* FIXME: Memory should be allocated and freed using a per-thread IMalloc
* instance returned from CoGetMalloc().
*/
I bet this error would go away once that FIXME is handled.
(There are other files that have the same FIXME, e.g. typelib.c, that might also
need to be fixed,
I dunno.)

It fixes the crash I saw with the SWAT 4 demo installer and the hang I saw with
the Jedi Knight 2 demo installer.
Note there are still some other regressions in 0.9.13 that affect InstallShield
installers so we need track those down and fix them before some installers work
correctly again.

I copied over dinput.dll but I can't find a 'msvcrtd.dll'. I found a msvcrt.dll
in the WINDOWS/system32 directory (in my windows installation) but no
msvcrtd.dll. This dll also does not seem to exist in www.dlldump.com (again,
msvcrt.dll is there, however) I did a google search and found it here:
http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/pop.php?msvcrtd
I then added it to ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32 but I still got the error so
I also gave it a shot in the Rubies main directory and still no go. Where did
you have to place the file to get the game to start?
