Yes, I have tried both the default (i.e. win2k) and setting
win98 as the OS to emulate. When I tried win98 I was careful
to wipe my .wine dir, create a new one, set win98, and then re-install
the app and run it.
With both OS emulations I get the same windowing behaviour (although other
subtleties are slightly different).

SF3 really seems to use the driver to access the disc. It uses a rather
strange (but clever) mechanism to check the media. To quote filesplit.org:
"StarForce3 uses different checks (angular values). If these values are the
same that Starforce3 checks, then the copy will run flawlessly, otherwise it
won’t work. 90% of CD-R media when burned have these values shifted and
StarForce3 recognises this and prevents the software from loading."
AFAIK, each lot of CDs pressed gets scanned using special software that
creates a serial number based on the angular values. The values are different
for each stencil (correct word? - the 'stamp' used to press the CD/ DVD). This
number is the CD key that ships with the game, and is used to decrypt parts of
the game (every part of the game could be encrypted that way, including data
files). Which means each lot has the same key, or they create a unique serial
number that contains the key (if needed for online play).

I think there's something weird going on here. I tried:
Winamp 2.0
jackd 0.100.1
Wine 20050725 Gentoo ebuild
on my PII 750
I tried several mp3s and wavs, and all but one of them exhibited the following
behaviour (jack in realtime mode):
* No Error messages
* *Lots* of skipping, such that a five minute track finishes in seconds
* Lots of new jack outputs showing up in qjackctl's connection window
However one file played OK (other than some buffer underrun messages at the
end). I'm wondering if it might be because it's mono, whereas the others are
stereo. No time to test this theory now though.
In realtime mode I again got good playback for my mono file, but no sound at all
from the others. On pressing play I get these errors:
zombified - calling shutdown handler

Summary: No default font defined in winecfg
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.1.
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: major
Priority: P2
Component: wine-x11driver
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: triad(a)df.lth.se
When launching winecfg on a machine which does not have an Arial.ttf
font anywhere in its font paths, winecfg comes up with all characters
as blocks.
winecfg obviously wants to use the default font, which is by default
Arial.ttf, and when it cannot find this, only placeholders are displayed.
Workaround:
Putting Arial.ttf into a machine-global search path, or into the users
home directory in ~/.fonts, or into a the .wine/c_drive/windows/fonts
will fix the problem.
However for the common user the solution will not be obvious, and many
e.g. Linux distributions cannot redistribute any Windows core fonts like
Arial.ttf.
Proposed solution:
I believe it is possible to make the default font an alias to a common
X font. There was a config option prior to winecfg that would take care
of this, but I haven't been able to get that working for the new
configuration system. (I believe it will have to be maintained globally
in wine.ini.) Also, this default X font needs to be made into
a fallback whenever the default (Arial) font can not be located when
running under X, so that this situation does not occur.
Perhaps winecfg is also in need of a font selection tab which will make
X font replacements for core fonts a simple thing...

Could you preovide back your exact Jack invocation? It may be something about me
using multiple sound cards.

Summary: missing functions in GDI32.dll

Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal

ReportedBy: michal.seliga(a)visicom.sk
i used wine to run demos/intros which didn't worked in my windows98 installation
(wine is emulating windows xp)
however not everything run, so i wanted to take a look what is wrong
and i noticed that few 4k intros complained about missing functions in GDI32.dll
before they crashed.
so missing ones were these (copied from log)
warn:module:import_dll No implementation for GDI32.562 imported from

of course i can't be sure if this was the only thing related to crash, these
little programs aren't very foolproof, but if nothing else then it may be useful
for other programs too...

IMHO this is not a copy-protection -- should be just a free driver to modify IO
bitmap for desired CPU task (windows process). I found no info regarding its
API on the web, though.
If the software worked earlier, I should try switching Wine to win98, as now we
are defaulting to win2k, AFAIR.

If you have the same behavior with d3d8-wrapper oliver have more work :)

You say it worked with previous versions of wine but did not say which version.
If the version it worked with was recent (less thatn 6 months) then the best way
to fix it is to find the patch that broke it through regression testing. Please

I solved this a couple weeks ago, but forgot to update this PR.
And for some reason, my post isn't in the usual wine-devel
archives. Here's a link to another archive:
http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=wine-devel&m=112993474405336&w=2
and here's a copy of my post. The upshot is: libfreetype
wasn't found because the developer who built wine had
a funny setup, and was using 'acoc' to colorize the output
of ldd, and acoc corrupted the output of ldd.
-- snip --
Here's the strangest thing I've seen for a while.
I was tracking down why I could build Wine, but another guy
on the same machine could only build a slightly broken Wine that
gave the error
Wine cannot find the FreeType font library. To enable Wine to
use TrueType fonts please install a version of FreeType greater than
or equal to 2.0.5.
whenever you tried to use it.
The first clue was funny output from Wine's configure script,
though it was hard to see until I diff'd against good output,
and used cat -v to make invisible chars visible:
--- configure.log.good.txt 2005-10-20 10:57:21.000000000 -0700
+++ configure.log.bad.txt 2005-10-21 14:41:59.000000000 -0700

-checking for ldd... /usr/bin/ldd
-checking for -lX11 soname... libX11.so.6
-checking for -lXext soname... libXext.so.6

+checking for ldd... /home/mmoss/bin/ldd
+checking for -lX11 soname... libX11.so.6^[[0m
+checking for -lXext soname... libXext.so.6^[[0m
And what's that funny ldd?
And what are those escape sequences?
Turns the ldd is one wrapped by acoc (http://www.caliban.org/ruby/acoc.shtml)
which colorizes the output, which also explains the funny escape sequences.
This error went away when we stopped using acoc to colorize the
output of commands like ldd. We had been using acoc-0.5.2,
but the latest version (0.7.1) also exhibits the problem.
I hope this helps somebody else who's scratching their head

I'm a bit ashamed that so soon after I reported this I found a workaround.
Setting the game's output device to WaveOut instead of DirectSound makes audio
work just fine.
If you still would like to get the DirectSound output fixed, I'm willing to give
a hand if I can.
Thanks for your time.

or some other recent build?
If you can, maybe it'd help to have a log created with

Summary: Audio broken in AGS games
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9
Platform: Other
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-directx-dsound
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: jkohen(a)users.sourceforge.net
I found that games created with the Adventure Game Studio (AGS) have trouble
detecting the soundcard when ran under Wine.
The console shows:
fixme:ddraw:Main_DirectDraw_SetCooperativeLevel (0x7fd5d638)->((nil),00000008)
err:wave:DSDB_MapBuffer Could not map sound device for direct access
(Input/output error)
err:wave:DSDB_MapBuffer Please run winecfg, open "Audio" page and set
"Hardware Acceleration" to "Emulation".
err:wave:DSDB_MapBuffer Could not map sound device for direct access
(Input/output error)
err:wave:DSDB_MapBuffer Please run winecfg, open "Audio" page and set
"Hardware Acceleration" to "Emulation".
And a dialog pops up saying:
Adventure Game Studio
Unable to initialize your audio hardware. [Problem: Digital sound driver not found]
Switching "Hardware Acceleration" to "Emulation" removes the messages from the
console, but still gives the same dialog, and no audio in the games. I've tried
all possible alternatives for this setting, as well as setting the "Driver
Emulation" checkbox (I couldn't find any explanation of what it does, though).
I'm using Wine 0.9 as distributed by Debian. The Wine audio driver is ALSA,
kernel is 2.6.14, but I've been having trouble for at least 2 or 3 kernel
versions (and maybe for ever, but I can't recall as Wine has at least another
bug that makes AGS games unplayable). The .wine directory was freshly created
wine wineprefixcreate. Audio works fine in other Wine games/applications, I just
tried a couple random, awful shareware games from download.com. Note that these
worked with "Hardware Acceleration" set to "Full."
See bug #2811 for a couple of games created with AGS, or visit
http://www.bigbluecup.com/ for the complete catalog. Don't hesitate in
contacting me for more information.

There is a wine joystick test in wine/dlls/dinput/tests.
You can run it like this:

You may want to send a trace of this if it fails.

Developers won't start bothering unless you don't pass them enough info. ;-)
Mark, you still hasn't answered the question: if you're running "jackd -R" or
"jackd --realtime", does Wine start 'speaking' if you rerun "jackd" without "-R"
or "--realtime" option?

to solve: if you change the return value in GetCurrentHardwareProfileA (in
dlls/advapi32/advapi.c) from 1 to FALSE it connects just fine. needs testing

I get the same error from time to time. Minor changes to my application will
prevent it or cause it. My app is an simulator for testing and debugging control
systems code. It consist of 3 16 bit parts. A Delphi 1 DLL which uses shared
memory to register window handles that will get change messages when data is is
storing is changed. The other two parts are a Delphi GUI and the problem task is
a BC++4.5 EasyWin program which all of my control code is tested in. This code
loops and uses setjmp and catch to emulate my RTOS in my micro so it never
yields except when it call the dll to modify or read data stored in the DLL.
Because of the way I have the simulator running it uses 100% CPU on window or wine.
Could the problem be an overflow of the message que blocking a task.
I was looking for something like a sleep in win 3.1 API but from Borland help it
is not seem to be any call that works with the win 3.1 API. Any suggestion on a
call to make?

Shareaza still doesn't work with wine 0.9.1 -- with this fix, it does. (though
apparently the file has changed since then, but it's still essentially the same
).
Here's an updated patch for current cvs:

(credit to the original author, my effort consisted of a ctrl-F to find where
the place to put the 'return FALSE;' has moved :)
With the fix it works *quite* well (better than any native Linux p2p app,
anyways ;), there's a total of two notable bugs:
- if you open a menu in the menubar and then move the mouse sideways to switch
to a different menu, the old one doesn't go away (workaround: always close the
previous menu before opening a new one)
- it seems it asks to overwrite a file every time a download completes, even if
no such file was there before (workaround: say 'ok')

More of my somewhat wild guesses. As app uses lots of unicode comparitions:
| 0009:Call kernel32.CompareStringW(00000000,00000001,7fb2fa5c
L"USERPROFILEh\000b",0000000b,7fb2fa44

| 0009:Ret kernel32.CompareStringW() retval=00000003 ret=0068ae42
I suggest adding +nls flag.
As there are lots of calls to NtAllocateVirtualMemory() and
NtFreeVirtualMemory(), maybe adding +virtual flag also would help.
And I'd put at least 2000 lines in the log.

First case is already duplicate of bug #3573, so lets focus on the second.
If you know what older version of Wine the app worked, you probably can do a
regression testing and to find offending patch:
http://www.winehq.com/site/docs/winedev-guide/x1344
That would be a really informative bug report. More, give us please a link to
download the SuperPI app and tell us its version used in your test. Thanks. :)

The only way to detect where some race condition occurs IMHO is to compare two
wine outputs: "+all" and "+all,-relay".
Of course, one should always check if the last one really shows a problem before
comparing:
WINEDEBUG=+all,-relay wine matlab.exe 2>/dev/null
Still, comparing probably will be somewhat painfull, as some handles and
addresses will change for sure when WINEDEBUG flags changes. Here some awk/sed
filter/similarifier would help before doing diff -u. :-)

Hi, i didn't even know you could use native advapi32, and at least it's rather
tricky as fulltilt will i guess write registry entries about the background,
which , with native advapi32 is likely to fail. What i've found is that after
install, you can run full tilt once with native advapi32, and after connect
during the first run exit the program again. then run again with builtin
advapi32 and now you can connect as well. changing the background does work
right here with the above mentioned method.
could you try this, and report back please?

This is at a table with 7/9 places filled. The seats around mulder_fbi are
empty, but there should be a pedestal-style graphic in the gaps that is
clickable.
A background should also be loaded, instead of the plain green backdrop that is
visible. Right-clicking on the background should allow you to change it, but a
right-click does nothing.

Full Tilt Poker is a popular online poker system. The installer is available at
http://www.fulltiltpoker.com/ and works very well.
To actually get the client to connect, you must use a native advapi32.dll. I
pulled mine from http://dll-files.com/. This causes a few problems during
shutdown, but I don't think it affects actual gameplay.
Unfortunately, the game is unplayable due to some rendering issues. You are
supposed to be able to change backgrounds by right-clicking on the table, but
this doesn't work. Empty seats also don't appear (to join a game, you're
supposed to click on an empty seat). It seems like the rendering gets worse as
you jump from table to table. I'll attach a screenshot.
A few versions ago (sorry, I don't remember the version number), the game was
much more playable than this.

Update: Alexandre seems to think that this can be fixed in wine, until the hacks
are removed from the X11 sources, and the X patch can be invalidated. See below.

In general yes, but in this case it's Wine that is creating the huge
bitmap, and that could easily be avoided.

>From what I understand, WinRAR creates several small bitmaps, and then wine
renders it all as 1 big bitmap, which X cannot handle due to the cause of this
report, and so therefore X returns a BadAlloc call, to prevent some sort of
over-/under-flow... Wine, according to Alexandre and some others on the list
can work around this by properly rendering the images as several small bitmaps,
instead of 1 large one.. How long it will take to get that done, I dunno, which
is why the next post to this bug by myself will be linking this bug to a metabug
tracker for the šXorg Pixmap patch issueš.

Yes I did install from an RPM. It was the one that was provided on the wine
website. I'm running it without any windows addons. I don't have windows on my
computer.
I'd prefer to use an RPM rather then a CVS version it makes it easier for me to
maintain my OS. But I'll be sure to try the RPM version of the next release when
it comes out.
I've also had problems getting dream weaver to load and the windows version of
shadergen. shadergen is an open source project made with an open source API. Its
not loading either. Maybe it is my configuration. But it certainly didn't work
out of the box.
As for downloading parts of windows on to my computer. I'd prefer not to do that
but if thats what it takes. I'll see what I can do.

When I install steam per http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?versionId=1554 I
get wine-systray running in its own window. This would be fine (ideally it
would be part of the Gnome systray), however upon minimizing steam to the
systray by clicking the X button another problem crops up: the steam icon
doesn't appear in the wine-systray, and instead the only way to effectively
click it is to carefully right-click on a one pixel tall white strip.
Perhaps a default Wine icon is needed if there's a problem with the
application's icon? Moreover, the steam icon should work...

Is it possible that some encryption library is missing/not implemented?

No, I haven't. And I don't see any point whatsoever in doing that, because
considering that all the variations I've already tried so far haven't changed
the error nor the logfile in the least it should be plain to anyone that the
problem lies elsewhere. I'm a software developer myself, I do know how to
interpret and hunt down errors; continuing to assume the problem is my
installation at this point is way beyond clutching at straws.

Well, if you can tell me where to output stuff or send me a diff that
patches the driver I can give it a go. Best would be committing the
changes to CVS for potential future problems.

Hmm... you're running Xorg, I'm still using XF86 4.3, apart from that I
don't see any noteworthy difference. My kernel driver is a little older
(1.0-7167), but since I've had the exact same behaviour at least since
6*-versions (maybe 5*-versions, I can't say for sure when I first tried),
I really don't think that's it.

Mesa's libGL should be inactive, otherwise you'd be running in software mode.
Since I'm using Debian, my Mesa version is considerably older than yours,
though (4.1). Upgrading my system is pretty much out of the question ATM,
though; I could try installing an up-to-date Mesa from source, but I don't
think that'd work without upgrading the X-stuff as well, which basically
equals a complete system upgrade. I seriously doubt this problem is caused
by GLU anyway; doesn't look like it aborts because of tesselation gone bad
or something...

I just have installed Jack packages from Planet CCRMA repository and have tried
running native SndRec32.exe in Wine. Although I got lots of buffer underruns,

tried in another system FC-2 with the RPM for 0.9.1 with the same results.

The game Hearts of Iron 2 runs perfectly from what I can tell, with one
exception: it is very very slow.
This error fills the terminal window:
err:ddraw:Main_DirectDrawSurface_GetSurfaceDesc Impossible/Strange struct size 0.
The other possible cause of the slowness is that this application opens
thousands of little bitmap files, much more than a typical Wine application
would be expected to, so perhaps that's related.

Booting on the same system but with non-SMP kernel (2.6.14), vb3run.exe runs
fine. Only when booting with SMP kernel (2.6.13 or .14), vb3run.exe fails. So
it seems the issue is a conflict with SMP Linux and 16-bit Windows.

The same 16-bit error occurs in other programs we want to run on our terminal
server for our learning center. The other programs are niche, proprietary,
important programs, and I used vb3run.exe as an example because we could all
test it.

Hello.
I recently dug out my copy of Clockwerx, an old game (1995). I load it up in
WINE, and lo, it plays perfectly, save for one caveat - no sound. Background
music doesn't detect a MIDI device (unsurprising - no MIDI device installed),
but sound effects do not function either. The README states that it won't work
if another device is using the sound card, but even when I have all daemons
which might touch the card killed, it still fails to function.
Additionally, it gives no error about not detecting something with which to play
sound effects - it just silently fails to play. Additionally, other devices can
access the sound card and play sound perfectly during this time, so some mystery
app has not locked it.
Thanks.

I can move the configuration files or even the whole directory, that's

Done. Unfortunately the OpenGL driver isn't particularily talkative either,
but maybe those two extra lines give you further insight (I kind of doubt
it, though).

Tried all combinations of desktop double buffering and desktop itself on/off
and it didn't make the slightest difference.
I'm pretty sure Wine currently uses undefined behaviour when destroying
hardware rendering contexts, so it works on some platforms and fails on others.
What I'd really like to know ATM: what kind of graphics cards and driver

I have a playstation (PSX) to USB converter that shows up as /dev/input/event1
This is recognised and used by zsnes, fceu, and epsxe (everything I've tried it
with) However, using wine (0.9.1 from your unofficial debian repositories) the
joystick does nothing. This is with GTA3.
I was advised to run wine with WINEDEBUG=+dinput. On doing so, Gta3 would
immediately change resolutions, and then sit for a long time. It continues to
display the desktop, but grabs the mouse.(if I move the mouse onto window
decorations at this point, it has an unhandled exception, but I suspect that's a
different bug) At some point between 30 seconds and never the game starts
pretty much as normally, but still without joystick support.
I can send you one of these trace files, they're quite large but compress very
nicely. Let me know if I can give you any more information.
