Photodex is a slide show presenter which allows zooms, pans and fades in sync
with a music track. Testing done under win98 and wine cvs using AMD 2.5Ghz 333
Mhz fsb ll in one mother board with 1 GB ddr.
Install firefox for windows in wine. Visit the url and install the plug in. When
the plug in is active, running or paused the processes wine-preloader X and
wineserver use 100% of the CPU. This results in choppy audio in ALSA config and
large blocks of static using OSS.
When running on same hardware on win98 and using system monitor these are the
numbers I get.
Boot
Kernel processor Usage 5%
Kernel Threads 31%
Firefox
Kernel processor Usage 5%
Kernel Threads 41%
Firefox with plug in loaded before running
Kernel processor Usage 42%
Kernel Threads 46%
Running in window on firefox.
Kernel processor Usage peaks at 75%
Kernel Threads 46%
Full screen mode (right click menu) 1024x768
Kernel processor Usage peaks at 90%
Kernel Threads 46%
This may be just that the thread switching overhead with the debug calls pushes
the cpu use to the limit of my hardware but a guess is the threading
model/method used is not meshing with wine implementation.

I am trying to install 3ds max on Wine. When I launch the installer, it
complains about not having administrative privileges and exits. 3ds max
requires 2000/XP for installation, so reverting to Windows 98 is not possible.
Is there any way to make Wine assume that I have administative privileges

I think i found the cause of the problem :
when i install wine using cvs i do this::
export CVSROOT=:pserver:cvs@rhlx01.fht-esslingen.de:/home/wine
cvs login
cvs -z 0 checkout wine
when i compile cvs wine krnl386.exe.so is just a copy of kernel32.dll.so
when i compile a source tarball krnl386.exe.so is a symbolic link to kernel32.dll.so
i compiled both cvs and source tarball and searched for diffs in configure and i
see this:
in cvs config.log:
configure:5389: checking whether ln -s works
configure:5396: result: no, using cp -p
in source tarball config.log:
configure:5389: checking whether ln -s works
configure:5393: result: yes
now how is that possible? how can cvs decide that ln -s doesn't work? it just
works fine here.
any hints welcome

Hi Robert,
I made a patch that tells you all the audio modules detected.(which has been in
the CVS)
By Default the its being set to OSS as it being the more stable one even if
there is more than one.
For some other audio modules there is no accurate mechanism for detecting them
like nas, audioIO(Solaris).
try this small program after you unload the modules for oss and also after
removing the /dev entries
void main()
{
int fd = open("/dev/dsp", O_WRONLY | O_NONBLOCK);
if(fd)
{
close(fd);
printf("OSS Detected\n");
}

I loaded ALSA and OSS and winecfg detected them, and OSS was choosen as default.
Then I tried unloading all the modules (no /dev entries left either), but
winecfg still detects OSS. So the problem isn't fixed. Another thing that
bothers me is that OSS is default and not ALSA, I have only been having problems
with OSS in wine and therefore I think ALSA is alot better. (Perhaps I'm the
only one) If the load is high the OSS driver only creates static. ALSA is fine
even under 100% CPU usage.

AFAIK Wine doesn't use native X fonts at all right now; it does everything
with TrueType. There are situations where it would be nice to use X fonts
alongside TTF. in particular, X comes with a pretty good selection of
easy-to-read character-cell fonts in different sizes. It would be nice if
PuTTY, Notepad, Visual Studio, etc. could be configured to use them -- I
actually think they're easier to read than the standard Windows ones.
Ideally, there would be a per-app registry entry for X11 fonts to import
and exclude.
Note that Wine originally used X11 fonts and did not support TrueType.

Some additional tests:
I ran a +bitmap,+x11drv trace for Mirage and it's predecessor, Aura, to check
for differences that might explain the issue. The splashscreen is almost
completely identical for both apps (different colors, but most of it is the
same). I couldn't see anything that would explain the drawing error in the
diff. Maybe someone else finds the problem in there, so I will upload both
logs if anyone needs them.
And there's something else I think is worth noting. Sometimes, upon starting
Mirage, it hangs for a fraction of a second. Shortly after the splash pops up,
after the (supposed to be) dark gray backgound is drawn, but before any
widgets appear. At that point, the background still has the correct, dark gray
color. But as soon as the first widget appears, the background changes color
to dark blue (completely wrong). I don't know why Wine starts to draw it
correctly and all of a sudden produces garbage, but maybe the info helps.
I'm starting to wonder if a DIB engine is really needed to fix that issue, or
if the problem is somewhere else...

The CVS regression site says:
"The date format is YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS. Using the CST date format ensure that
you will be able to extract patches in a way that will be compatible with the
wine-cvs archive http://www.winehq.org/hypermail/wine-cvs"
This paragraph says the time should be in CST. But in both command line examples
it gives:
cvs update -PAd -D "2004-08-23 CDT"
and
cvs update -PAd -D "2004-08-23 15:17:25 CDT"
The time is CDT. And it should, in fact, be CDT because that's what's used for
the mailing list itself. The paragraph should definitely be corrected; it
confused the hell out of me the first time I regression tested and made me use
the wrong system.

That fixme seems quite harmless. However you have:

fixme:opengl:wglMakeCurrent created a delayed OpenGL context (0x7c1b7ea8) for

I don't see these fixme's at all in my output. Do you have also problems with

------- Additional Comments From tony_lambregts(a)telusplanet.net 2005-05-11 11:42 -------
This is not a duplicate of bug 2075. Sim City has its own version of MSVCRT.DLL
that is used to display "Simoilians". I had the same problem in Feb 2003.(see
Bug 1257) The problem then (and now) was that wine does not use the dll from the
programs directory.
A MSVCRT.DLL copied from a windows installation (Windows/system) did not solve
the problem then nor does it solve it now.
This is a recent phenomena and is not a duplicate of bug 1257 but a re-occurance
of the same problem.
In general terms wine is doing the wrong thing by ignoring the dlls in the
programs directory. (This is not what windows does) Also it appears that lotus
notes has the same problem)
For now the workaround is to use winecfg to override this for now.

the SteamInstall.exe has a tendency to hang a lot at 26%. sometimes stopping
and restarting installation will get it to continue, but oftentimes, the easiest
way is to delete the .wine or Steam directory and try the installation from
scratch. not sure what is going on there. i think the installer tries to
restart itself at that point, so it may be an issue there...

Any code that attempts to modify the XML tree won't work. At the moment, Wine's
msxml3 implementation is pretty much read only, and allowing modifications to
the tree will introduce a bunch of problems.
We probably need to copy bits of libxml2 into msxml3 and rewrite the way the
tree is handled to fix it...

Now the bug is still there. But when i download the source package wine20050830

The deadlock is somewhere in direct sound mixer (the thread holding the lock
no longer exists), it also causes a problem with mmtimer getting corrupt data.
I've already checked to see if theres a missing LeaveCriticalSection but it
all seems ok, I've also tried giving MMTimer it's own critical section but
that didn't work either.
It may be a callback from the alsa driver since using emmulation seems to get
past the problem it many cases.

where 76 is major, and 7676 is minor version? ddraw checks for a \d+.\d+.\d+

Wine 0.9 now won't actually let me install it...
It uses InstallShield and comes up with the following error:
"Error Number: 0x80040706

It's been a while since I installed TTOTD, so I can't remember if I had to work
around this issue before.

I have encountered this bug running the ExpressSCH.exe and ExpressPCB.exe
programs that can be downloaded as freeware from http://www.ExpressPCB.com. I
was running the 20050524 version in a Fedora 4 system. The bug is 100%
reproducible, even when attempting to run with native DLL's. Native DLL's give
a
different sequence of error messages, but it seems to be approximately the
same problem.

Summary: Distorted geometry in Out from Boneville
Product: Wine
Version: CVS
Platform: Other
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-directx-d3d
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: willie(a)froq.net
The same problem is visible in Lucasarts Monkey Island 4 when using the D3D
renderer IIRC. Maybe Out from Boneville uses the same engine, as it's also an
adventure game, created by ex Lucasarts employees. The geometry is partially
distorted - some vertices are way off, or simply won't move with the rest of
an object.
A demo of Out from Boneville is available for download at:
http://www.telltalegames.com/products?pc=bn0102&CID=0&dlact=1
BTW, 'till two days ago, the game wouldn't even start, one of the patches
yesterday fixed that - great work!

But Wine would know that the Windows-application lost the focus? Should be
sufficient I'd think? If the game has focus, switch to the desired resolution,
if it loses focus, switch back to the desktop resolution - wouldn't that
work...?

OK, got a working Wine to build again. So I tested it some more:
- With my fresh (and working) Wine build, I get the "Bus error" message
- With my broken Wine-build (I guess some of the compiler flags killed it) +
relay trace, I got the message you usually get on i386.
- With cxoffce 5.0, fresh install, no native DLLs, WINVER=win98, it works.
Everything tested on a single Opteron, gentoo/ amd64. Hope this makes more
sense to you than it does to me...

Log of running with +msi debug, last 100 lines
I hereby submit a log (last 100 lines) of running the DoW demo with
WINEDEBUG=+msi.
Having read bug 3236 (which might be related to this one) I this debug is run
while using native rpc,ole32 and oleaut. I did not have native dcom98 so I
couldn't try that, which might be a reason for my failure. Needless to say I
still couldn't get it to work, but at least it seems like I got a bit further
with the native dlls. But I hope this bug can be fixed so that the installation
can work without native windows dlls, in case that is what I'm missing.
Best wishes

Can you build todays CVS on amd64? And if so, how? Like I said, it always
segfaults for me (tried with two different compilers, gcc 3.4.4 and 4.0.2)?
And why does it work with cxoffice? Because of the native DCOM, or are there
any special patches in cxoffice? According to Codeweavers, cxoffice 5.0 is
pretty much identical to Wine 0.9...

Ok. I had two wine installation on two computers (debian unstable) :
- from source
- from official debian package
The .dll.so is missing in these installations. So I decided to remove my
packaged installation to compile from source, and now the .dll.so is here.
So, I conclude that this .dll.so was not compiled during my first compilation
(dependence problem ?)
Similarly, this file is missing from the official debian package too (I don't
try your package).
I'm sorry for this report which can now be closed. Paint Shop Pro 9.01 doesn't
work but it was not the subject ;)

Usually only a few days. If it still wasn't committed, there's either
something wrong with your patch, or Alexandre missed it. Anyway, I'd suggest
to resend it to wine-patches, and if Alexandre doesn't commit it, send a mail
to wine-devel, asking why it was rejected.

Trying this with a broken Wine install, I hope the results are still correct.
Today's Wine CVS also segfaults for me (is it supposed not to work when
compiled on amd64?). Anyway, I tried with WINEDEBUG=+relay - for some reason,
Wine doesn't segfault this way. I don't get the error you mentioned, but it
still doesn't work (it _does_ work with cxoffice, however). A popup appears,
stating:
General extraction error
Location ES1
And then it quits. Maybe the error is caused by the relay trace, but, as I
said, I can't try without that trace. Maybe I should file another bug report,
one of yesterdays patches broke Wine for me...

Some disassembly shows:
sdkpc.exe calls OutToApp() which expects 6 arguments, but sdkpc.exe only
pushes 5 arguments when calling this function.
The 6th argument is however the temporary buffer used by this function to
print errors...
Somehow this value is in WINE a pointer to the PEB (process block) which then
gets overwritten by and "Unhandled reference" message.
So the program is buggy :(
If you can report this to TI, please do.

I read bug 3276 before posting. I thought he was at least able to install the
game (the full Dawn of War), but it might in some way be a duplicate of that bug.
Desktup Double Buffering was enabled as per default, but disabling it did not
make it work.
P.S. The unhandled exception in the WINEDEBUG=+relay was about 4000 lines from
the end, not 5000 as I said in the original post

Summary: Failure to install Dawn of War demo on Linux using Wine
0.9
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9
Platform: Other
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-binary
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: magnus.lundborg.6955(a)student.uu.se
When trying to install the Dawn of War demo (available from
http://www.dawnofwargame.com/demo/) the installer crashes before finishing.
I am using the 0.9 version of wine (0.9.0-winehq-2 package) on a Debian Sarge
system.
I have tried changing some of the dlls which are reported as used when running
with WINEDEBUG=+loaddll, but it has not helped. Perhaps I have picked the wrong
ones. From the output it seems like ole might be a problem.
I have also tried switching graphic settings in winecfg, but to no avail.
Running with WINEDEBUG=+relay shows something about an unhandled exception
(about 5000 lines from the end). I do not know how to attack the tailed output here.
I'd be glad if someone could see if the error is reproducible.

This bug has somewhat disappeared with later Wine (20050930).
It still happens rarely, but I can't seem to invoke it at will anymore.
Stuttering sound when loading/saving is still there, but it won't make Wine die
anymore.

Summary: WGL_COLOR_BITS_ARB handled with improper values
Product: Wine
Version: 20050930
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: major
Priority: P2
Component: wine-x11driver
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: chris.kcat(a)gmail.com
Looking in dlls/opengl32/wgl_ext.c, it appears WGL_COLOR_BITS_ARB is
implemented using GLX_BUFFER_SIZE. Unfortunately, accordind to
developer.3dlabs.com:
WGL_COLOR_BITS_ARB - Specifies the number of color bitplanes in each color
buffer. For RGBA pixel types, it is the size of the color buffer, *excluding
the alpha bitplanes*, For color-index pixels, it is the size of the color
index buffer.
GLX_BUFFER_SIZE - Number of bits per color buffer. For RGBA visuals,
GLX_BUFFER_SIZE is the sum of GLX_RED_SIZE, GLX_GREEN_SIZE, GLX_BLUE_SIZE,
*and GLX_ALPHA_SIZE*. For color index visuals, GLX_BUFFER_SIZE is the size of
the color indexes.
This is causing WGL_COLOR_BITS_ARB to handle the alpha value where it
shouldn't be.

I have tried the apps on winxp, there are some missing message notifications and
control notications in wine and also some graphical glitches like in the
Up-down.exe not scrollbars for the updown control. I have used royal theme in
wine. with theme there are some drawing glitches with Proprty Sheet.exe.
For some of the controls like Animation.exe, wine is working better than windows
one. Our Commctl version is 5.80 but on win xp its 5.82. Anyone please test the
apps on other windows versions

Still the same problem with the very latest, but here is a strange thing.
When run from a "windows" executable under KDE, by setting up a mime type,
i.e. by clicking on the .exe name, and selecting as start this program with
wine, then sometimes it works. But, when attempting to run a program from the
command line, the same error occurs, even on a program that runs by clicking
on it.

Okay, so I've tracked down the cause of this bug. The functions
GetMonitorInfoA() and GetMonitorInfoW(), along with the display name, were
changed in cvs on 2005-09-28 03:17:13.
Using the older definition of the function, the graphics are invisible under
Windows 2000 emulation but visible under Windows '98 emulation. This
corresponds to a display name of "DISPLAY".
Using the newer definition of the function, the graphics are invisible under
Windows '98 emulation but visible under Windows 2000 emulation. This
corresponds to a display name of "\.\DISPLAY1".
Absolutely no clue why this is bad, but if I switch the display names back and
forth, I can recreate the bug in either emulation mode. I'm new to wine, so if
there's a run-time method of determining which emulation mode is happening, the
functions could be modified to pick the right display name. Or if theres
something more fundamental going on that I don't understand, please enlighten me.

I'm not a c expert or a linux expert. So, I may have the explanation/wording wrong.
The kernel headers that wine uses during the compile are in
"/usr/include/linux/" instead of possibly the
"/lib/modules/version/build/include/linux" directory, which causes the HAVE_V4L2
check to possibly be inaccurate as it is defined in "/usr/include/linux/videodev.h".
http://www.winehq.com/hypermail/wine-devel/2005/05/0176.html
>From what I understand the kernel headers in "/usr/include/linux" should be the
ones that glibc were compiled against, even if the running kernel is different.
http://www.ussg.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/0007.3/0587.html
In short I would assume that the kernel headers should be taken from the
"/lib/modules/version/build/include/linux" directory using the version of the
running kernel to decide which headers to use.
Perhaps only certain parts if not all should be compiled against the running
kernel headers while others using the ones that Glibc were compiled against?
make failed orginally for me because of this when compiling avicap32_main.o
