Summary: Unable to run EXE packed with UPack
Product: Wine
Version: unspecified
Platform: PC
URL: http://post.baidu.com/f?kz=58190491
OS/Version: Windows XP
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: major
Priority: P2
Component: wine-binary
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: nikkho(a)gmail.com
Programs packed with UPack (http://dwing.51.net), cannot be run under Wine.
Since they run fine under Windows, it is probably a bug in Wine.
BTW, Wine already is compatible with other packers such as UPX, or NsPack, but
they do not get the compression ratio of UPack.

Just a small update: I'm stuck with tracing, I don't know how to run the trace
so that it gives info on the child process, and running the extracted file on
it's own doesn't work at all. Anyway, the protection system is element5 ESD, a
quite common protection/ license manager - I'm afraid I couldn't find any
technical in-depth information about it.

I'm not sure whether 'textbox' means the edit control or the static control, but
my patch will fix both.

You were right! Running a +process trace shows something. The executable
extracts a file to Windows\Temp, called "License Cleanup ESD.0001". That one's
a win32 executable as well, and gets executed. As soon as it's started, the
popup appears.
The license/ protection system seems to be somewhat common, it's not by
Pixologic (and therefore not part of the demo), and might be used for a few
other applications as well. I'll try to find out more!

i'm afraid there's no simple fix this now. However, if you add a simple
Sleep(5); in dlls/winmm/time.c right here:
/**************************************************************************
* timeGetTime [MMSYSTEM.607]
* timeGetTime [WINMM.@]
*/
DWORD WINAPI timeGetTime(void)
{Sleep(5);
#if defined(COMMENTOUTPRIORTODELETING)
.
.
the game runs just fine. Also make sure to add a key Managed=N under
HKCU/Software/Wine/x11drv, otherwise an annoying window will be on top of the
game. Audio set to OSS emulation. With these simple hacks you can play the game
at least quite nice for now until someone has a real fix.

So install and run IE in win98 mode, while keep your other applications in win2k
mode. I doubt they will see a difference. Wine infrastructure is quite more
unified than the whole 9x-to-NT Windows tree.
I write this not to close a bug, of course, which persists, but to make your
life easier. :)
If I am wrong, point us to those apps, which strightly depend on IE being
installed in w98 or w2k versions. Such reports can be transformed as a separate
bug reports, I believe.

| "trace+reg" gives an output
O dear, I misread this as "gives no output". :-]
I am Sorry.
Yet I think you should try running full version with several debug flag combination.
"warn+all" may give you some unusual warnings.
"+loaddll" or "+module" should show the dlls being loaded.
"+relay,+snoop,+msgbox" should give you some application activity just before it
pops up message box if you cut tail of some thousands of lines of Wine output.
"+file,+reg" should give another view of what app is doing.
"+process" will show any child processes launched (I imagine that may be a
reason of seeing no traces)
"+tid" adding this flag shows you what thread does every trace come from.
Then I'd try these:
"+hook",
"+ntdll",
"+nls"
"+server".
But it's hard to tell without having loaded dll list and without a relay trace.
Of course, it's hard to tell what is wrong at first sight. To find unusualities
you can use command 'diff -u' between the log of demo version and the full one.
Then lines belonging only to demo will be prepended with '-', while ones of
full version will get the '+'.
Also you can read some inspiring docs and find some usefull ideas on debugging
and finding how ZBrush copy protection works:

I'm quite sure. Other applications show stuff doing a +seh trace (as does the
command you posted). Also, my Wine build was configured with:
./configure --prefix=/usr --without-curses --libdir=/usr/lib32 --with-x
I already tried an unpdated kernel and switched the compiler from gcc 3.4.3 to

Actually, my mistake.. I should have tried it a few times, rather than just one.
Using the Transgaming control makes it work sometimes, rather than not at all....
I'm guessing the cases where it works were the cases that it used to freeze
described above. The bug described here still happens very frequently (most of
the time), so it should remail open.

Yes, I see the Transgaming one is much larger, and includes a dll from Microsoft
that you can't redistribute (msvcp60.dll).
I think I did actually have the original author's plugin working correctly, but
what probably happened is I let it get out of sync w/ Fedora - I run rawhide and
I update that fairly often... silly of me to expect that to work.
I see the current versions are not compatible with either my Firefox or my
Mozilla browser. I am forced back to Transgaming's plugin (which also includes
Gecko dlls, so it should not get broken by browser upgrades).
Closing bug, since this does fix the problem. By the way, I see the Steam focus
bug hasn't be fixed yet - shame, since a patch for this does exist, and I even
had it documented on the HL2 appdb entry for a while - maybe I'll post about
this on wine-devel again...
Next: re-try HL2 and document all the hacks that requires on APPDB
- transgaming mozilla activex Control (or make sure it's compatible w/ browser)
- document unmerged patch for Steam focus bug
- document workaround for EULA acceptance bug (defined LicenceViewed=y on
cmdline) until undocument Control Event is added for ScrollableText msi control

wine directory. Because of bug 3636, I use a script
to unpack all the registered CABs the MDAC installer
installs but doesn't unpack; I'll include the script I use.
To reproduce this,
register for the Powerbuilder 10 trial at sybase.com,
download and unzip all five or six zipfiles,
blow away ~/.wine,
install mdac 2.7sp1,
and run the 'common installer', PB10Eval/PowerBuilder/setup.exe
There will be ten or so little warning dialog boxes
complaining about DLLs not being able to register
themselves, but that doesn't seem to be a huge issue.
The real problem seems to be that the installer
gets into a loop or locks up after about the fourth
subinstaller.
Now, I don't know how many people will need to
install PowerBuilder under Wine, but it's a nice
test of whether wine can handle a complicated
database-ish installer.

Yes, testing of demo version would be greatly appreciated, Andreas. For me it
runs nice too. The only strange thing is e2_d3d8_driver_mfc.dll loading, which
makes some long delays during the process final initialization stage. See my
log below.

Well, this issue needs more debugging still. I have to get my
hands on a copy of Office 95, going back and forth like this is
costing too much time (no offence to you Philip). I think I'll
submit this patch as is since it already fixes the Office 97 and
2000 installers.

Hi, do you have the same problem with Max Payne demo? That one seems to run

it fails for you as well, because if so, it must be a problem with your

Apparently it isn't. This happens on my box:
$ WINEDEBUG="trace+reg" /usr/src/wine-cvs/wine/wine --version 2>&1| wc -l

I guess your Wine can be built with trace messages disabled. This can be done
by using apropriate ./configure param:
$ /usr/src/wine-cvs/wine/configure --help | grep -iC1 trace
| --disable-debug compile out all debugging messages
| --disable-trace compile out TRACE messages
| --enable-win64 build a Win64 emulator on AMD64 (won't run Win32
Are you sure this wasn't a case with your box, Willie?

I am using autofs (kernel automounter) to automatically mount and unmount my cds
and network shares. I added such an automatically mounted dir to wine as a drive
(/misc/cdrw_dvdrom). The problem now arises wehn I use an open dialog: It takes
nearly 0.5 seconds for each directory (icon) to appear (files are not a
problem). I found out, by inserting a cd the problem vanishes. So it seems wine
constantly wants to access above automoubnted dir, which fails if no cd is in
the drive. I think constanly trying to access the drive (even if I didn't want
it) isn't what wine shoould do. If wine would try this only if I explicitly
selected the cd-rom, then the problem reported wouldn't be there.

I just tried running this program with wine from cvs
built on Fedora Core 3, and it worked fine.
(I verified that the vbrun300.dll it unpacked was
good enough to run the open source vb3 app
http://neil.fraser.name/software/recog).
Can you try building wine from cvs to see if that
makes the problem go away? If so, maybe it's a problem
with how the RPMs were built (seems unlikely).
If not, then perhaps it's a problem with Wine built with gcc-4.0.

For some reason, the Transgaming Mozilla ActiveX control without native DLLs
works perfectly, while the one from www.iol.ie/~locka/mozilla/ doesn't work at
all. I had the same issue a few minutes ago, and it was fixed by switching to
the Transgaming ActiveX control. There seems to be a difference after all.
Now, if only HL² wouldn't always crash on startup... :-/

WINEDEBUG=+ddraw,+seh,+tid log
Lionel,
here's the log you wanted. Nice to get such an immediate response. It seems the
crash that happens at the end is in the destructor of the rendering engine, so
something earlier must have gone worng. I'm going to also test a debug build of
the game and see if the trace output gives me anything.
We have recently printed new releases of TLJ in english and french with our
partners (since the sequel is coming out next year), but I haven't got one
here. For testing, it might be easiest to download the demo, it's just 55 MB. I
see that our network people have not uploaded it to the ftp server on friday
like I asked them, but I'll put on my own webserver at
http://enno.homeunix.net/tmp/thelongestjourneydemo_english.exe
BTW, the newer versions of the game haven't got any of the copyprotection
problems.

winmx seems to be dead. Old version can be downloaded here from the website above;
Using wine-0.9:
the app pops up the mozilla activex messagebox and either answering no, or yes
makes it quit. I could only get it coming up using native shdocvw, shlwapi and
oleaut32. (however then it can't find any networkconnections)

Many applications needs Internet Explorer to be installed. It will be very good
if ie6setup.exe can be run with a win2k wine version and this will be a good

Hello,
I own this game but was never able to get it running in Wine due to the copy
protection not working. Maybe I should try it again to see if it works 'better'
nowadays (I got alas only the French version - damn French shops only selling

Anyway, if the problem seem DDraw related, could you attach a

Summary: The longest journey: almost working
Product: Wine
Version: 20050930
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-directx-ddraw
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: enno.rehling(a)gmail.com
I am a programmer at Funcom. We made an adventure game, "The longest journey"
some 6 years back. Strictly in my free time, I've been testing whether the game
would run under wine. I was told to report problems here. I have access to the
source of the game, and could make changes to the game in my free time if that
would help.
The game complains about 24 bit surfaces, something I was able to circumvent by
starting my X server in 16 bit mode. It then comes up nicely, the bink intro
video plays, and I get to the main screen where everything looks good so far
except some glitches in the transparency of a font. There are warnings galore,
and when I start the game, crashes o na null-pointer access inside it's
rendering engine (I assume because some DirectX call doesn't do waht it's
supposed to).
Almost all the error messages are DirectDraw-related. Here's a list of them,
I'll attach a full log at the end. If there's anyhthing I can do to help make
this work, please let me know. I can provide a legal copy of the game. In the
meantime I'll spend a little time trying to find out what the crash is all about.

Well, I have problems with Half-Life and Counter-Strike, while Winamp works
well except there's a bug when you pause aud unpause after some seconds the
sound "fast forwards" for the same amount of time it has been paused. (With
Waveout), with directsound I still get the same problems.

Well the games that I have tested so far is Warcraft 3, Diablo2, Starcraft (what
a blizzard! :) ) Nowadays you don't need anything special, dmix should work out
of the box. You don't need to activate it trough a ~/.asoundrc or something like
that. I'm using the intel8xo driver and this is the soundcard: 00:06.0
Multimedia audio controller: nVidia Corporation nForce3 250Gb AC'97 Audio
Controller (rev a1)
I had problems with dmix and wine before, but that was probably cause I always
used OSS instead of ALSA without even knowing it. It seems that when you create
a new configuration, and look at winecfg, it seems that ALSA is selected. But
this isn't the case. You have to select another driver and then choose ALSA
again and click apply to activate it. If you have any other questions, feel free
to ask!

Good news! The team at Bridge Base Online have addressed some the
incompatibilities with wine in their latest release. From personal experience
and online reports I know that their fixes work with wine at least as early as
20050725 and also work with 0.9.
>From what I understand the information below only applies to the current beta
test software. In the future the standard version downloaded from BBO will have
these changes rolled in. You can get more about running BBO on linux at the BBO
forum:
http://forums.bridgebase.com/index.php?s=8cac7ad0e101a86c0d2d9acf5aa457f3&s…
Here's an excerpt from the forum, a short HOWTO from Pierre Couzy (pico on BBO):
HowTo : install bbo on linux
1/ Go to www.winehq.com and download wine if you don't have it on your system
already.
2/ Grab a copy of Symbol.ttf. You'll need this font to properly display the suit
symbols. Copy it in /usr/share/fonts/truetype/symbol (you'll have to manually
create the symbol folder)
3/ Download bbo_setup.exe (http://www.bridgebase.com/450beta/bbo450_setup.exe as
the time of writing, but I guess the normal version will work pretty soon)
4/ Launch a terminal and type : wine bbo_setup.exe (bbo450_setup.exe if you're
using the beta version). This will launch the installer. Proceed as if you were
installing under Windows.
5/ Grab the patched executable (again, this step might be useless in the next
version of bbo) at http://www.bridgebase.com/450beta/LinuxNetBridgeVue.zip
Unpack it, you'll get an executable file, copy it to ~/.wine/drive_c/Bridge\
Base\ Online
6/ Launch the executable from a shell : wine NetBridgeVu.exe (or
LinuxNetBridgeVue.exe for the next weeks). In case you don't find the
executable, it's located in ~/.wine/drive_c/WhateverFolderYouUsedForTheInstall
7/ You're done.
Caveat : Monitor the free memory on your system when playing, you might have to
quit and re-launch bbo from time to time, there are some memory leaks probably
due to Wine. On my machine (PIII 700, 384 Mo, Ubuntu) I have to do this about
every hour.
If you have a problem, you can contact me on BBO (pico)

Summary: Display fonts according to fonts.conf
Product: Wine
Version: CVS
Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: enhancement
Priority: P2
Component: wine-gui
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: willie(a)froq.net
Why doesn't Wine simply try to follow ~/fonts.conf for hinting/ antialiasing/
sub-pixel hinting/ substitutes/ excluded range if it exists? I know that Wine
tries to be smart, guessing what settings would be best, but that's usually
neither needed nor wanted. That's why there is a config file for stuff like
that.
Wine simply stands out, because it renders fonts in a completely different
fashion compared to all native apps (eg, I use medium hinting, no sub-pixel
hinting and anti-aliasing for native apps, but Wine only uses hinting). Even
if it would respect those setting, Wine would still look odd, because the font
size doesn't match at all, but I think that's a different bug/ issue (for Qt/
KDE, GTK2, Fox, Java, Enlightenment and Wx, font size 9 is the same - for
Wine, it's much smaller, about 30% I'd say).
AFAIR, Wine has a XML implementation, couldn't that be used to parse
fonts.conf?

Soldat's DirectX is displaying garbled text with wine, making it useless as a
multiplayer game (but still fun to play singleplayer.) Maybe it has to do with
something funky in the Jedi DX headers?
Here's a screenshot:
http://appdb.winehq.org/appimage.php?id=1076
The game's menu is working fine. I think this is because it uses regular
controls instead of DX to display.

The patch will probably be sent off to CVS after I have tested Office 95 and
MDAC_TYP installer (which is also having a problem). Since this bug is classed
as ALL versions of MS office I think we should give a few others a try. Ill
let you know if it should be committed to CVS after a bit of testing.
Please do not close this untill I have least tested office95.

It was committed on 2005/10/11 and should thus been in Wine 0.9

But I still see exactly these problems :-(

can you also try -O0 please.
It is likely a miscompilation...
the assembly diff you quoted is none, since movl 0,eax does the same as xor
eax,eax.
I suspect a compiler error.
You could try to single out the file that needs to be compiled with -O0 in
dlls/ntdll to make the error go away.

The problem is that there's now a new, almost completely empty, builtin
usp10.dll. This wasn't present in earlier versions of wine, so it just used
native usp10.dll.
So for now as a kind of work around use

Summary: "Desktop" configuration variable broken
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-x11driver
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: zarquon(a)t-online.de
The new, winecfg-based version of the "Desktop" variable in the x11drv section
is broken: it doesn't behave like a full X11 geometry specifier anymore, i.e.
you can only enter stuff like "800x600", but not "800x600-10+79". This
behaviour was also documented as such in older releases (e.g. 20041201):
[...]
(adding a geometry, e.g. <literal>800x600</literal>
for a such-sized desktop, or
even <literal>800x600+0+0</literal> to
automatically position the desktop at the upper-left
corner of the display).
[...]
The old behaviour was extremely useful to me, doesn't hurt people who don't
want to use it and it shouldn't be hard to reanimate, so please return to
the old semantics ASAP.

Well, that seems to be problem appearently. optimization flags are set to -O2 by
default i guess. I changed it manually in the /ntdll/Makefile to -O1 ,
recompiled ntdll.dll.so, reinstalled it, and now the bug is gone. What's your
conclusion about this?

Summary: Corel 10 reports "no fonts found" wine 0.9 AMD64
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-programs
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: nospam(a)thenerdshow.com
Corel 10 installs fine under wine 0.9 when you trade places of regsvr32.exe
between the install media and windows/system32 (install overwrites this file)
using native msi. The resulting install refuses to recognize fonts as being
installed, however and the program bombs with an error.
(Wine then tries to create an error window of negative dimensions which causes
another stack dump. See bug 3678).

The directory is actually a subdir of the program's install directory. For me,
it's in "C:\Program Files\AR System\HOME" which points to
"/mnt/hdb1/wine_c_drive/Program\ Files/AR\ System/HOME/"
I tried creating a new directory in my Wine C: drive and pointing Remedy at that
for the "home" directory. No dice, same error no matter where the HOME
directory is. I thought it might be the whitespace in the path names, so i
actually created a directory called "C:\HOME" and it still didn't work.
Strange, as it was working fine with CVS from a couple of months ago.

That's really too bad, as it seems to work perfectly (except for the debugger
issue). I may be wrong there, but I use an amd64 system, and there was an
issue with recent amd64 kernels that affected copy-protected games in a
similar fashion IIRC? Think I read something like that on wine-devel a few
days ago...

Good news! Its fixed for Office 2000. Now I guess Ill move onto Office 95.
Office 95 setup quits unexpectanlty with the following in the console:
fixme:odbc:SQLConfigDataSource (nil) 2256 "" #0104
fixme:odbc:SQLInstallDriverExW L"Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb)" (null)

err:seh:setup_exception stack overflow 0 bytes in thread 0009 eip ffffe400 esp
7fa31000 stack 0x7fa30000-0x7fb30000
After we fix and test SQLInstallDriverExW and then test MDAC 2.8 SP1 and if
that works we should be able to submit the final patch to CVS.
If you want any more patches tested give me about 2hrs. Im reinstalling linux
since its got in a right mess. Wine is a bodged up hack at the moment cause
ld.so.conf is playing up and I had to hard link some lib folders. Now upower
isnt working so Ill go back to square one.

This bug is still valid for Wine 0.9 on Solaris 10/x86.
According to the ptrace(3C) man page no symbolic defines are available, and
/proc should be used instead anyway.
#include <sys/proc.h>
int lfd = open("/proc/$$/lstatus", O_RDWR); /* Insert pid here. */
struct stat st;
struct prheader *prh;
struct lwpstatus *lwpstat;
fstat(lfd, &st);
prh = mmap(NULL, st.st_size, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, lfd, 0);
lwpstat = (struct lwpstat *)(((char *)(prh + 1)) + prh->pr_entsize * lwpno);
The integer registers are then available by indexing lwpstat->pr_reg with SS,
UESP, EFL, CS, EIP, ERR, TRAPNO, EAX, ECX, EDX, EBX, ESP, EBP, ESI, EDI, DS, ES,
FS and GS.
The fp registers are available in the prfpregset_t lwpstat->pr_fpreg.

Yes, something like that. But remember, this is Wine's bugtracking
system, we should use it to get applications to run on Wine without
hacks like Sidenet.

Hi,
Yesterday, after having manually closed some old fixed bugs, I discussed
with infyquest and tlambregts on irc and tlambregts told us that instead
of manually closing the bugs, bugzilla had a "change several bugs at
once function"
It was then discussed that bugs that are FIXED and where resolution is
not LATER or DUPLICATE or REMIND should be marked CLOSED as the fixes
have been integrated in an official release (namely 0.9).
http://bugs.winehq.org/buglist.cgi?query_format=&short_desc_type=allwordssu…
FYI the CLOSED status means:
The bug is considered dead, the resolution is correct. Any
zombie bugs who choose to walk the earth again must do so by
becoming REOPENED.
Unfortunately bugzilla doesn't allow to close bugs directly from their
fixed state so you have to verify them before and thus it will send two
mails for each bug closed. I don't think it was possible to turn off
change notification at that time (tlambregts even told me that the two
spam bugs were normal because of the way bugzilla works) but I cannot
verify it as my account has been gently disabled...
However it seems that ivanleo didn't like my CLOSING session because
some of the bugs were not "fixed". Can someone tell me how a bug can be
not fixed and marked as resolved-fixed (see my query) ?
The discussion on IRC took place at a time when there were many of you
(vitamin, Thunderbird, kbln, infyquest, _Marcus_, tlambregts, cmorgan
and so on) and nobody seemed to think it would be a bad idea to close
bugs that were fixed before the latest release came out.
Thanks for clarifying the situation.

suggested patch
This patch correct the true problem i.e. wine create a link from sound.dll to
winmm.dll. However, this seems to be specific to windows 3.1 and the name is in
fact sound.drv.
Please apply this patch and rename sound.spec to sound.drv.spec in
\wine\dlls\winmm folder

This is not the case in recent versions. Works great in Wine 0.9 and CVS.

ALSA + DMIX works great for me! I'm using Wine 0.9 and also a copy of the latest
Wine CVS. DMIX is standard by default now in ALSA. I tested under 100% CPU
activity and it still was rocksolid.
(I'm using ALSA 1.0.9.)
