Summary: Colour palette goes nuts when Input fields displayed.
Product: Wine

Severity: normal

AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org

App: Titanic Explorer
It an educational CDROM produced using Macromedia Director and making heavy use
of Quicktime.
Had to disable ddraw within Quicktime as there was a repainting issue. It now
works fine until I try a search.
When the search dialog opens the white backgound of the 'input field' flickers
to blask and then back to white. When I start to enter a search the backgound of
the field goes black again. Then the colour of the application go screwy. blacks
become white text blue and so on. Also masks that give the front-end shape (like
rounded corners) appear so the rounded corner now appears in a white box. This
behavior continues even after the search dialog has been closed.
To give you an idea of the colour shift. If I don't enter a search criteria the
app displays a 'Windows' dialog. Instead of the light gray with black text and
blue title bar, I get a dark grey background white text and a yellow title bar.
When all this happens I don't see any errors in the console. What I do get in
the console is at start up (see below);

This just came to my mind: AFAIK, Wine has basic support for device drivers
these days, for SafeDisk and similar copy protection schemes? So, Wine can
support device drivers to a certain extent? I assume the element5 VxD is
somewhat similar to SafeDisk drivers, as there's no real/ special hardware
involved, so maybe it would work with Wine?
The second thing is - are regular services really standard executables? The
one from element5 ESD is. And it's possible to start it with Wine - so, maybe
it isn't a real service? If that's the case, it might work, if ZBrush would
even start up...

Some applications ignore the "COMSPEC" environment variable and expect the
command prompt to be located at '%WinDir%/COMMAND.COM'. For these applications
to work properly, there needs to be a symlink called 'command.com.so' pointing
to 'wcmd.exe'.
Occasionally, applications will look for "RUNDLL.EXE" when calling functions in
16-bit DLLs. For these applications to work properly, there needs to be a
symlink called 'rundll.exe' pointing to 'rundll32.exe'. Wine's RUNDLL32 does
support calling 16-bit libraries by the way: I checked.

The truth is that most applications do not mind the SETUPX_CreateStandardLDDs
function not being implemented although this can result in files being installed
incorrectly in %WinSysDir%/Unknown when one of the standard paths is not found.
The freeze when attempting to run Active Setup is actually caused by the native
ADVPACK.DLL included in the package not initializing correctly. The solution is
to launch the Active Setup Wizard executable with Wine's ADVPACK.DLL set to
builtin. If it is contained within a self-extracting package, you can find it at
<Wine's temporary files dir>/IXP[000-999].TMP with the highest number (the
[000-999] part).

Are you saying that Wine now supports the LNK/PIF file formats used for
shortcuts? I only reported this as a bug because I couldn't load the native
EXPLORER.EXE in Wine 20050419 (but that was the version used in NT4 SP6 -
probably too advanced...). Are there any 3rd party shells that support the
LNK/PIF file formats (which is where applications get their path info from, of
course) and are usable in Wine? Does Wine now run EXPLORER.EXE or have its own
implementation? Can Wine now launch LNK/PIF files directly as if they were
executables? Does WINEFILE now support launching LNK/PIF files?

This is defiantly a bug outside of DirectX, so far I've narrowed the fault
down to between 2005-08-30 and 2005-06-13, using the current version of
Direct3D and the dated version of the rest of wine.

Summary: No windows redraw or repaint in Adobe Photoshop Deluxe

Using a very old version of an Adobe Photoshop Deluxe Home Edition (version
3.1), I have a regression in wine between the December 2004 release
and current releases (at least from March 2005 onwards).
Previously it was usable, but now none of the applications
display area redraws or repaints properly. I guess this is related to
the window management re-write that started earlier in 2005.
An example sympton is if I iconise the app completely (using
gnome-metacity window decoration button), and then un-iconise it,
nothing gets redrawn. Similarly if I move another app window
over this app, and then bring this app to the front again it
does not redraw (leaving an image of the other app).
In fact, when the app opens, the app window contents are incorrect
from the outset because things are not redrawn properly.
I realise this is specific to this app, so if you can give me some
guidance on what debug channels to turn on, I will try and produce
some trace logs to attach.
The window management stuff has definitely gone adrift in the
case of this app.

I think he didn't, as this is different issue. I guess I am experiencing it
too. Installer crashed due to loading and unloading of OpenGL.DLL for me. But
when I upgraded my X server packages, my glibc, my gcc, my nvidia-binary driver,
the crash moment has changed now - setup goes even more further now.

IMHO, we need a new bugreport, something named like a 'Autocad 2004 installer
crash using native MSI' or so. I suggest you to create +tid,+module,+seh,+relay
output, cut 1000 lines before the crash and attach it to a new bugreport.
I'd use following command for the cutting:
$ cat acad.txt | grep -B1000 -A5 '^wine: Unhandled exception'
See you in another bugreport. :)

idea where to look further?

A little more info for users: if you don't also copy the file
proident.pi, you'll get dialog boxes saying "A required file is missing"
when doing anything.
Also, the easiest way to make the 'hidden file' go away is probably
to edit /etc/fstab and add the 'unhide' option to the list on the line
for the cdrom.

Or at least I'm quite sure it's related to the keyboard layout list. Upon
starting Cyborg (all DLLs builtin except for msvcrt, also tried with Wine's
msvcrt, tried several WINVER settings), the application exits as soon as the
workspace gets drawn. The console shows no output at all, Cyborg seems to
handle the crash on it's own. I did a +tid,+keyboard,+seh,+x11drv trace that
shows an exception immediately after keyboard:X11DRV_GetKeyboardLayoutList.
The output of winedbg makes me believe GetKeyboardLayoutList is the culprint,
I'll attach the trace, winedbg output and the relevant parts of the Cyborg
logfile.
BTW, Cyborg is a EOL'd turnkey graphics application from the long time defunct
company 5D, extremely rare. But the bug could still be interesting...

First, please don't ask why. I've spent the past several days trying to find
this answer online, and am finally submitting the bug report. It's beaten me
(for now).
This is actually a group of inter-related issues on this one.
1) During the install process, there is a failure relating to unimplemented
permissions APIs when running under Win2000 mode. Change the mode to Win98, and
the installer will run to completion.
2) When running, I need to get the MSyS shell working. The command to run is:
wineconsole 'c:\msys\1.0\bin\sh.exe'
I then get what looks like a functioning shell, ready for me to type in
commands. However, no matter what command I enter, the next line displays
"exit", and then wine reports that the program has exited with a good status. I
have even gone so far as to try and run a program like this:
wineconsole 'c:\msys\1.0\bin\sh.exe' -c /bin/ls
And I get the same result (except a blank screen with no ls output).
I can accept running in Win98 mode just fine. I simply need to get this
particular environment working under Wine, and am now stumped as to what I can do.

I think it's regression outside of wined3d.
Anyhow, I'll take a look and try to find out what caused the regression since
it's been stopping quite a few games that used to work really well.

No, that is simply a hack to make _one_ game work. It is a bug with World of
Warcraft, not Wine. Any patch that changes the meaning of OpenGL functions
should be discarded promptly.
However, I have tested this hack myself and it does work well for WoW, so if
that is the only thing you use Wine for then by all means make the modification
yourself and enjoy, but please do not submit/apply any such patch into Wine CVS.
Incidentially, I heard that WoW patch 1.9 has this OpenGL problem fixed, but
could be just rumours.

No fix, but I found a workaround for this problem.
Find an Application that uses a working version of InstallShield (for me
Battlefield Vietnam does the job)
Start installation
Goto C:\Program Files\Shared Files\ (don't know if this is correct, on a german
machine this would be C:\Programme\Gemeinsame Dateien) and copy the
InstallShield folder to a save place (in case another application overwrites
your files)
Hit Cancel on the installation
Start the Installation of the app that gives the 80040706 error. It should not
overwrite the files, but use the present files and installation works just fine.
Sometimes I get an error that IKernel.exe could not be copied. This can be
solved by overwriting it with a fresh one out of your backup folder.

Just tested again (this time with the school edition of

I did not notice for a second about the duplicate bug as when I try to access

notice this.
Now, I will move my questions over to the thread you provided me with.
Unfortunately, thou still we users cannot install AutoCad. It would be great if
someone could solve this issue for us.
Thank you,

I have seen this too. I solved by doing a 'make distclean' before
'./configure && make depend && make'. You may wan to remove the
*.spec.c files by hand. Wine no longer needs them, but a 'make clean'
will not get rid of them because you already updated your tree, so
Wine doesn't know about these files anymore.

Also I tried to copy the CD contents to my harddrive, without any difference
in the result.

Hi,
I tried to implement Installing native MSI. I did create in ~/.wine/ a new file
named nativemsi.reg and and followed the instructions. Install was succesfull.
Then, I tried to run setup and got setup to crash.
I will attach few files with the hope someone would take a look and see if
something is wrong.
I will also attach a debug file and what I read on konsole.
Please help if possible.
Thank you,
Spiro

> is this on a completely fresh install?
No. And why would it be?
> (so after rm -rf ~/.wine) If not , please try on a fresh install.
Not a chance in hell!
If you seriously think I'll reinstall all apps that need registry entries,
among those rather fickly ones like the SoF series, you've got another
thing coming. If you can give me a list of potentially dangerous registry
entries, I'll check for those, but I absolutely, positively draw the line
at a fresh install.
What I did try was renaming all *.reg files (and config) in my ~/.wine
directory so none of the files should have been seen by Wine, and the
program failed in the same way. That could also have been caused by
then missing registry entries, though, but that's as close to a fresh
install as I'm going to go.
The problem I'm experiencing may be related to another bug, though:
> It seems at first it is loaded by x11drv, then unloaded, and then loaded
> again by e2_d3d8_driver_mfc.dll. My Max Payne is demo v1.05.
That rings a bell: Bug 2725, which I also get when a 3D rendering context
(OpenGL in 2725) is destroyed and then immediately reopened (when it fails).
This may even be driver-specific. So just for the record: I'm running XFree86
4.3 with the 7176 NVidia drivers (I've had this problem in Wine for many
generations of the drivers, though). And no, I will neither reinstall
XF86 nor upgrade it for this. To me the problem appears to be that Wine
doesn't wait for the old context to be _properly_ destroyed before attempting
to open a new one.

can you try with a fresh fake wine setup?
or run "wineprefixcreate" once to update perhaps too old fake wine setup.
