I haven't used wine (or even Linux) for a long time so this test is on a fresh Ubuntu 5.04 and Wine20050705 which is the latest I could find packaged for Ubuntu/Debian. I see two issues: (1) The wine "standard font" apparently still gets changed to a smaller one after I install and run Word97. However it is not a real problem anymore since it doesn't break the window layouts (e.g., the text doesn't flow under the picture on the winecfg About page, as was my original problem). (2) I don't know if this should be in the same bug report, but after Word is installed and has been launched, my left and right mouse buttons appear to be swapped! Again this applies to Word itself but the same thing now happens with other Wine programs like winecfg or winemine. My ordinary Linux desktop and appliations work normally. Since I'm only a casual user of Wine I have not tried to change any settings (such as DLL overrides) away from their default values. Sometimes, this causes a crash. I have three drives set up, c:, d:, and e:. C: is the normal drive_c, and d: and e: are subdirectories in my home directory. Run notepad (wine application). File->save as. Now, drill up the directories, and move out of the wine directories into the host OS filesystem all the way until in the root directory. Go to, say / bin and save the file. Saves, but the file is written to c: (~/.wine/drive_c) instead of /bin. Run notepad. File->save as. Now drill all the way up until the very top. Two entries: "/" and "my computer". Try to go to "/". Crash. This doesn't happen all the time. There is nothing special about notepad. We all know that AJ does not like special hacks in the event code (like a key to trigger start of relay logging) but here it's something worthwhile. (Background: Poser 4 installed with wine 2005-02-11. It works, with exception of font bugs as described.) I've just tried wine 20050930. When run without modification ['cd $POSER_DIR; wine Poser.exe'], the program no longer works. I see the splash screen, and the typical initialization reports, but shortly after, the window disappears. This is what's left on the command line: err:module:import_dll Library MSVCIRT.dll (which is needed by L"C:\\Program Files\\MetaCreations\\Poser 4\\Runtime\\Plugins\\FFMS.arp") not found err:seh:EXC_DefaultHandling Exception frame is not in stack limits => unable to dispatch exception. If I copy the MSVCIRT.dll from my Win2k system32 directory into the Poser directory, and run it again (as above), I see the splash screen as before; and a few more initialization messages than before. But the window still disappears. I get the following: wine: Unhandled exception (thread 0023), starting debugger... (The debugger doesn't start, I just get dumped back to the command line. The thread number changes each time.) Running 'winedbg Poser.exe' yields the following. (Note that I still have MSVCIRT.dll in the program directory. Program behaviour matches the previous test.) This is because all our GDI operations are implemented using calls to the X server and the X server can only work on bitmaps that are in the same format as the screen. DS stands for DirectSound here. If the OSS driver is used there are four "DS" devices under Audio Device but selecting these won't do anything either. With an earlier version of Wine (can't remember which one) this did work. The dropdown did show both DirectSound and MME devices and I was able to select sample rate, audio latency and outputs. Traktor did work quite well except that the audio drivers did not support more than 2 channels so Headphone outputs were not selectable. I did some debugging on this both in the ALSA driver and on dsound and saw that Traktor calls IDirectSound_IDirectSound_GetCaps which seems to return the capabilities that the ALSA driver returned. I have no idea what Traktor is looking for though in order to get things shown in the dropdowns. This might be an easy one, I just don't know where to look. The fully usable demo version of the program (in which this exists) is downloadable from the Native Instruments site for free. The download is just 18 megs. You also need to create the following registry key (if it doesn't already exist in your install): [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders] "AppData"="c:\\windows\\profiles\\rmay\\Application Data" AppData can be whatever you want, so long as it is a valid (ie. already created) directory. Lines 1-18 are the messages generated during a successfull update, lines 21-38 when it fails.(the wm_null messages are my addition, sent in the programs wm_paint handler).
