So, this bug was fixed. I already created another report (bug 3160) for the
problem that still remains.

additional comments on program behavior
Upon startup, a splash screen is immediately displayed.
After a few seconds, a woindow labelled "about Graph Paper Printer" appears
behind the splash screen. It has a box labelled "press any key to close". It
goes away if that box is clicked, and immediately an error box stating "no
printer in your system" appears. Clicking on the "yes" in that box makes it go
away.
Then the main window of the program appears (labelled "Graph paper printer
4.03"), along with several boxes, one on top of the other, stating "access
violation ....". Clicking on the "OK" in these boxes makes them go away, and
one is left with the large window for the main program labelled "Graph paper
printer 4.03".
However, the upper left section on that window, where a picture of the
particular type of graph should be displayed, is blank.
Clicking on a type of graph in the upper right area of the window ("Cartesian
paper" for example) brings up an "access violation" error box. Nothing seems
to produce a sample graph in the upper left.
I'm using a stock Fedora core 3 (updated).

Install is fine, but at the end it runs the installed program, and there is a
dialog box hidden behind the splash screen (I am running metacity), asking you
about creating shortcuts. Just hit Enter a couple of times.
The access violation only occurs if there is no printer defined. Otherwise it
seems to run fine.
The "illegal directory name" sounds like notorious bug 3241

if (!data->managed && !using_wine_desktop && is_window_managed( data->hwnd ))
into
if (data->managed && !using_wine_desktop && is_window_managed( data->hwnd ))
(and get rid of the next line which makes no sense noiw)
i will investigate this further this evening when i have more time (as this will
probably break other things .... :) )

James,
I really agree, Wine is improving extremely fast, and I'm really grateful.
Still, while it's really great that more and more apps work from release to
release, that won't exactly help the people who are affected by this huge
regression. There are guys working with Wine, not testing random applications.
I, for one, only need Wine to support two applications: One of those
applications used to work, but is affected by this regression - the other one
never really worked (bug #1973, might be a small bug, can't tell - the bug
only affects one or two apps AFAIK, so I understand it won't ever be a
priority task to fix it).
So, for me and quite a few other guys, Wine became unusable despite all the
improvements of the recent months. The old WM code had many problems, but it
_worked_ for us, and that's somewhat frustrating... Believe me, if I
understood Wine's x11drv, I'd try to fix the problems myself. But I only know
a little C++, so I'm pretty lost digging through the Wine sources.
Anyway, keep up the great work! I read wine-devel almost every day, hoping at
least one of my apps will start to work (again) in the future...!

I don't know if the problem still occurs in the newer WINEs. Nothing I've
seen indicates that is has been fixed. This was a show stopper for us and
so we took another non-WINE approach.

[to the bug]
Note: This requires a multi-select open-file dialog. A good test is (Wine's)
regedit since every one has it & it has multi select.
> Is it fixed now ?
No, like the shift-key up selection problems (bug #2493) it is still present.
Q: Is the assignment still correct? This bug was assigned on
2002-10-29 to dpaun by fgouget.

> This can be viewed in any listview [...] for instance [...] open dialog
One needs to have multi select available. My suggested app is therefore Wine's
regedit.

I see the dotted line move now, whereas the selected blue stays.
I'd call this fixed.

Presently it is working pretty well. There is still alot of work to do
especially if we want to be able to load and use windows IME dlls. However as a
rough first step it is doing well.

Reading other bugs from Shachar, it seems that this bug is like a todolist for
him and that the whole description is in the subject of the bug.
So I'm reoppening it, sorry for the noise.
However if you have any update on this, don't hesitate to report back ;-).

Is probably not better.
Data1, Data2, Data3 are generated from the current time, so Data2 and Data3
are likely to stay the same.
Data4 is depending on the node address and does not change on repeated calls.
I am not fully sure how the GUIDs are defined to be, so I am marking this
as enhancement and confirm it.

------- Additional Comments From david.guembel(a)gmx.de 2005-03-10 08:52 -------
When removing the critical section, the problem still doesn't appear, not on
uniprocessor, not on SMP, and neither when running several instances of the test
program.
However, the application that causes the problem for me does not only do 1.
CreateFile, 2. WriteFile, 3. CloseHandle (like the test code above does), but 1.
CreateFile, 2. ReadFile, 3. CloseHandle, 4. CreateFile, 5. WriteFile, 6.
CloseHandle. I.e., it opens the file for reading, reads, closes the file, opens
it for writing, writes, closes the file. That still causes errors, and as you
suspected, the WriteFile gives me a 6 (= INVALID_HANDLE).
I noticed that if I open the file for reading (step 1.) using GENERIC_READ |
GENERIC_WRITE, close it, then open it for writing (step 4.) using GENERIC_WRITE,
there is no problem. However if I open it for reading with GENERIC_READ only,
close it, and open it with GENERIC_WRITE for writing, the WriteFile gives me the
INVALID_HANDLE after some time. Looks like your assumption about the race in the
cache is correct, doesn't it?
Anything else you'd like to see tested?

Summary: DirectX games stopped working.
Product: Wine
Version: 20050725
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: blocker
Priority: P2
Component: wine-directx
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: agalakhov(a)ifmlrs.uran.ru
Some DirectX games do not start anymore. I.e., Sim City 4 locks dead with a
blank screen immediately after start. At this time I see a lot of DirectX
related error messages on the stdout. It worked good enough and was 100%
playable (some minor graphic glitches) with older (February-March) versions of
Wine, though.

Not so visible as before but still there. Cursor switches between the arrow
and the hourglass very fast so that it looks like blinking. It does not move
as before, however.
I'm unable to check it in Sim City 4 since this game stopped working at all
after recent DirectX updates.

I don't know if there's already a bug for it, but basically we need to map the
GENERIC_* access rights to object-specific rights, and then always use the
object rights.
If you remove the critical section, are you able to reproduce the problem with
your test app? I don't see it here, and I suspect it happens because there's a
race condition somewhere else in your real app that makes it use a bad handle
(my theory is that a race in the server handle cache causes it to report the bad
handle error on the wrong handle, but this requires that the app causes a bad
handle error in the first place).

The error 5 is because you didn't request GENERIC_WRITE access. This is still a
bug in Wine, but a different one.
Also note that the mutex in your sample code is useless since you create a new
one for every invocation of the function. Still, it shouldn't fail even without
a mutex.

Some native dlls don't work. Apart from that we are more interested into making
application work with pure built-in dlls.
What ou can do is
1)try with no native dlls and report back in this bug report to see if you're
problem is fixed and
2) (if it doesn't work) try with your windows xp dlls and report back.
Thanks.

I tried to re-install wine but the problem remains.
on http://www.mcnabbs.org/andrew/linux/paf/ there is:
Problems Running the PAF Installer
If you have weird problems, such as an "error installing iKernel.exe"
try some of the following tricks which have worked for some other people
(and let me know which worked):
* Remove any Wine config files (some settings from an older version
of Wine might conflict with the newer version).
* Have |winesetup| or |winesetuptk| setup the default configuration.
* Run |regedit-wine /usr/lib/wine/.data/winedefault.reg|.
it seems like my problem, I would like to use regedit-wine
|/usr/lib/wine/.data/winedefault.reg|
but I cannot find regedit-wine in my installation.

v1.09 of the game launches secondary process of Diablo.exe and it detaches from
its parent terminal (let me say so). Once game is launched, you see its
messages in the terminal, but you can run another programs and cannot kill it
with Ctrl-C. Is your version exactly v1.09 ? I am very interested in this
possible difference.
On the offtopic: I am very curious - what is happening, when you launch 'wine
Diablo.exe' in 8-bit mode using nvidias native drivers. If answer will be more
of an offtopic, please write me an e-mail message. Thanks. :)

Thanks Saulius, but my 8-bit problem has nothing to do Wine but Xorg. I'd have
to rewrite the config and probably reboot to get rid of the nvidia binaries to
test it. But this is off-topic.
I forgot to mention that my Diablo is v1.09, originally installed and updated
with Wine, and no Windows anywhere.
I have not been able to force it to draw anything while in "black screen", I
cannot confirm that behaviour.

I'll attach seven snapshots of the problem on the
various screens of the installer.
Messages like the following were also displayed, which
might explain why all the windows in the screenshots have
garbage window text:

I can confirm that InstMsiA.exe will not install using Wine CVS. I've set the
version to Win98 in winecfg and set the dll overrides correctly using winecfg
and WINEDLLOVERRIDES. The app immediately returns to the prompt without
displaying any gui or console output.

Summary: Kid Pix Deluxe 3 crashes on startup
Product: Wine
Version: CVS
Platform: Other
URL: http://broderbund.com
OS/Version: other
Status: NEW
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-misc
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: dank(a)kegel.com
To reproduce: buy a copy of Kid Pix Deluxe 3
(list price $20, but you can get it for $2 at
http://www.shop.com/op/aprod-p18756232?sourceid=3 or $5 at
http://www.surpluscdrom.com/seansky82aw-store/kidpixdeluxe3.html)
or borrow one from your neighbor's kid :-)
Run winecfg and tell it to act like win98
(or you won't be able to start the installer).
Run the installer under a fresh copy of Wine.
When it asks you to register, click 'register later'.
You'll have to click and enter data past several
poorly rendered screens, but amazingly, installation
seems to complete properly.
Before you start the product, you may need to copy
the hidden file configit.dll from the kpinstaller directory
of the cd into the directory where you installed the game.
(The file on my disc doesn't show up in linux, so
I had to grab it under windows.)
Unfortunately, trying to start the product itself
fails quickly with an exception:
