If you're running an old version of Wine and you report a bug, we *can't* help you, because Wine has changed so much in between your version and CVS. I get the feeling that you think Wine developers don't care when our changes break apps. The truth is we work on Wine because it's important to us, and we care greatly about apps working. We realized the WM rewrite would cause regressions, but far more good came from the rewrite than bad. It's easy to think we don't care that yours and other apps are broken because of the rewrite because we haven't fixed it yet, but the truth is we seriously lack developer manpower. There are a million items that need to be completed in Wine, and we only have so many people that can and do work on them. IIRC there are several 'tables of contents' on cdroms, one of which is the portable iso9660 filesystem, the others being the RockRidge and Joliet extended tables of contents. Perhaps the file is only listed in the Joliet table of contents, and is thus only visible if mounted on a windows box. I have a sample application showing the same behaviour. It seems that the error can be triggered faster on SMP systems, and when using more threads. Another observation: When setting the wineserver process to SCHED_BATCH scheduling policy, it takes much longer until the problem arises. I thus suspect a race condition either in teh wineserver or in the communication with the wineserver. Using EnterCriticalSection instead of Mutex objects does not change anything. Any advice on how to solve this bug is greatly appreciated. Direct draw log doesn't show anything wrong but the game is doing really nasty things at the very beginning. Indeed, it rendered into a 32x32 tile and try to read back renderer pixels. It's seems the game doesn't like the result and does not make use of D3D at all. This is a really strange way to detect D3D support or maybe it tries to avoid a particular device (reference one!?!?!?). I think making it happy with the results would enable D3D support and smooth shading light effect. Shipping a broken implementation with no fallback is bad practice and actively prevents me from testing new Wine releases, bug fixes or not. Note that this also addresses the 'upgrade or we don't support you' point made by James Hawkins : I cannot test because the app is completely unusable as a result of this all-or-nothing approach. I reported the issue as soon as I was aware of it and spent a good deal of time finding out what patch broke the system (I suspect many would not have bothered). Those with the intimate knowledge of Wine haven't been able to fix it yet, for one reason or another (motivation strikes me as a troublesome reason, given the size and impact of this problem, but I don't question it). That leaves me out in the cold. I simply don't have time to learn how to hack on Wine - my days are very busy with RL stuff (especially at the moment) - and even if I could, those who wrote the code are likely in a better position to fix it or provide a fallback method. Without wanting to appear obnoxious, the delay on getting a fix to this issue also impacts my willingness to test new releases. This issue remains in place 8 months after it was reported and very close to a 1.0 release. What purpose testing and reporting bugs if the result is no change? I appreciate that volunteers are working on the code and have in fact a current license for CodeWeavers CXO product. CodeWeavers wash their hands of the problem because this isn't a supported app; in fact with the previous code it could very well have been and I could have easily demonstrated this. Right now, though, this single issue is preventing that. Volunteers are not obliged to fix this either, I know. I'm not saying that they should, but am making the case for a policy change to implement compatibility switch in order to prevent this kind of major breakage being a blocker in future. I activate the compatibility switch and can immediately upgrade Wine without losing my ability to use apps that worked before; I can still test the new code by removing the compatiblity switch. Easy, effective and painless for almost everyone. Lionel, I'm afraid your reply makes the case for a compatibility policy for major changes. I'm relying on your level of motivation for a fix. It's therefore completely open-ended in terms of when a fix might be implemented, if at all. That's entirely your right as a contributor, but doesn't help any of those folks affected by this change. Your code ends up being untested because either the users go back to Windows (possibly swearing off Wine for life - worse still if they were developers looking at Wine for making a linux release of their app) or they run an old version of Wine. Wine is a major part of the linux desktop scenario and it needs to be reliable (even as alpha software) and reasonably well planned. Until this issue, for me it was. Anyway, as most Open Source project, refactoring is often done in a more drastic way than in commercial projects (i.e. 'legacy' code is removed even if it breaks things). This for two reasons: a cleaner code baseline and to provide motivation for peole to fix the issues (otherwise the legacy code would remain in the tree for ages). And as this GL provlem is present in the tree for months now, it seems that nobody is really motivated to fix it. The latest wine version which did that correctly was Wine-20050628. Wine-20050725 is showing '~~~~~~' instead of transcription Wine-20050830 and Wine-20050930 are both showing a garbage of wrong symbols. I'm very happy that I discovered this, because I've erased the files in question, and freed up lots of wasted space. Now... if I could figure out why it wants to dump the memory in the first place... There's obviously some kind of an assertion that fails..but why.
