Phil:
You've misquoted me. If you're running an old version of Wine and you report a
bug, we *can't* help you, because Wine has changed so much in between your
version and CVS. I get the feeling that you think Wine developers don't care
when our changes break apps. The truth is we work on Wine because it's
important to us, and we care greatly about apps working. We realized the WM
rewrite would cause regressions, but far more good came from the rewrite than
bad. It's easy to think we don't care that yours and other apps are broken
because of the rewrite because we haven't fixed it yet, but the truth is we
seriously lack developer manpower. There are a million items that need to be
completed in Wine, and we only have so many people that can and do work on them.
Eventually the GL issue will be resolved, but know that between now and then,
we are constantly working to improve wine and better the end user experience on
so many fronts.

Yes, copying that one file by hand from the CD-ROM on a
Windows system into the kid pix directory gets us
past that error. So it's a system problem of some sort,
not a Wine problem!
(The game still doesn't work, but that's another bug.)

I can confirm this behavior exists with CVS. The screen corrects itself when
you switch to another window in the WM and then switch back to the app.

Nice try, but it's worse: there's a file of that name in the directory KpInstaller
on the cdrom, but is only visible when the disc is mounted
on a windows box, and only if you show hidden files!
IIRC there are several 'tables of contents' on cdroms,
one of which is the portable iso9660 filesystem,
the others being the RockRidge and Joliet extended
tables of contents. Perhaps the file is only listed
in the Joliet table of contents, and is thus only
visible if mounted on a windows box.
I will see if copying that file by hand rescues the installation.

using my patch [3], which helped me from a crash in libGL.so in 8 bit video

No, it didn't help me, but you can never know about another box and its setup. :-)

This problem doesn't appear when using true OSS, only when using ALSA's OSS
emulation. Hence, it works fine in, for example, 2.4.27. When using a kernel
that uses ALSA, the problem can be worked around most of the time by using
wineoss and running the game at nice 19, though there are still some problems.
Attempting to use winealsa is just painful :P. As for what makes the
difference between true OSS and emulated OSS, I couldn't say...

This error still exists in 20050930. I have a sample application showing the
same behaviour. It seems that the error can be triggered faster on SMP systems,
and when using more threads.
Another observation: When setting the wineserver process to SCHED_BATCH
scheduling policy, it takes much longer until the problem arises. I thus suspect
a race condition either in teh wineserver or in the communication with the
wineserver. Using EnterCriticalSection instead of Mutex objects does not change
anything.
Any advice on how to solve this bug is greatly appreciated. I think file access
in threads is a pretty critical thing, and I'd be happy helping to find a solution.

Hmm, I think what happens here is that a dialog box is supposed to be shown, but
it isn't. The installer is stuck in winex11.drv.WaitForMultipleObjects, waiting
for the user, but the user doesn't see the dialog box, so he doesn't know what's

> err:ddraw:Main_DirectDrawSurface_Lock Invalid values in LPRECT !!!
The same error sometimes occurs in Icewind Dale II, making at least one area
impassable. I found a hack on your mailing list, but it hasn't been accepted
because it probably isn't what DirectX would do:
http://www.winehq.com/hypermail/wine-devel/2005/02/0506.html
Would it be possible to make this error at least non-fatal, so that the
aplication doesn't crash?

Jason you are right. Last time I checked (about 2 / 3 years back) the game
entered the event loop and was waiting for events (thus taking 0 % of CPU time).
Now (on my slow PC) I have the menu screen appear so we can at least close the
previous bug (except if we change the title to 'rendering is awfully slow' :-) ).

I think UNC part (kernel32) is working fine. We have a different problem in nt
namespace (NtCreateFile):
- \\??\\PIPE handled as a named pipes (correct)
- \\??\\MAILSLOT handled as a mailslot (correct)
- everything else is handled as a file (incorrect)
The only way I can see this fixed is to use wineserver's object manager to
resolve a name into an object and perform the proper operation.

I've tested the app and I can confirm this bug.
Direct draw log doesn't show anything wrong but the game is doing really nasty
things at the very beginning. Indeed, it rendered into a 32x32 tile and try to
read back renderer pixels. It's seems the game doesn't like the result and does
not make use of D3D at all. This is a really strange way to detect D3D support
or maybe it tries to avoid a particular device (reference one!?!?!?). I think
making it happy with the results would enable D3D support and smooth shading
light effect.
Haven't managed to do some RE'ing (Winedbg crash).

Hmm, in most cases it seems to be fixed (wine 9-30-2005). There is one (more
comlex) case where it is not. I need to analyse it, what causes it and give some
example code then.

For duplicating using built a built in design file.
Start programa open File

Hit the running man icon and the ASSERT should trigger.
I took a look and added some debugging traces. It is an off by one error caused
by the patch.
Added emulation of RichEdit 1.0 behaviour when the 1.0 window class is
being used. This emulation (introduced in M$ RichEdit 3.0) counts
paragraph endings as 2 characters (CR+LF) instead of 1 (CR).
Here is a subset of a trace with the assert converted to a TRACE. and a trace
added to ME_SetSelectionParaFormat where it decrement nCharOfs.

Original report from Chris Rajula.
It doesn't handle the night/dark effect at all, but just falls back to ugly
pixels...
The previous client (7.1) was perfect from this respect so it seems that the
producers of the game changed the way that their effects work since of version 7.1
I'm sending you two screenshots, the first is a link from somebody running it on
windows (it is also the way it looked in the 7.1 client thru wine), second how
it really does look.

The day/night flickering is the same as in bug 1248.
For the fullscreen and maximize problems, we can't fix them because the clien
7.1 which is used can't be run anymore.
So this bug should be marked as duplicate of bug 1248 and closed.

You can install native MSI following the instructions here:
http://wiki.winehq.org/NativeMsi?highlight=%28msi%29 (if you use a recent Wine
version, make these changes using winecfg instead of using config file).
Anyway builtin MSI works quite well now, so please try agin without using
Microsof'ts msi and if it still doesn't work, please reopen the bug and give us
the informations you will get in the console and if possible a place where to

Despite the "black screen in menus" bug I had been nicely playing Diablo with
Wine 20050725 and 20050628 at least, version 20050830 had some trouble I can not
remember anymore. These were all Gentoo packaged Wine snapshot releases.
I took the CVS version and tested it twice, dates and reports follow.
The CVS version works just like 20050628, except the CVS version prints some
information.
-----------
Wine from the CVS Sep 27, 2005.
Immediately after starting:
pq@daedalus $ bin/wine 'D:/pelit/Diablo-wine/Diablo.exe'
fixme:ddraw:Main_DirectDraw_SetCooperativeLevel (0x7fdffb48)->(0x10022,00000013)
fixme:x11drv:X11DRV_desktop_SetCurrentMode Cannot change screen BPP from 32 to 8
fixme:x11drv:X11DRV_desktop_SetCurrentMode Cannot change screen BPP from 32 to 8
fixme:x11drv:X11DRV_DDHAL_CreatePalette stub
fixme:ddraw:Main_DirectDraw_WaitForVerticalBlank
(0x7fdffb48)->(flags=0x00000001,handle=(nil))
The "Blizzard" movie plays ok. After that, black screen. Music plays ok.
Main menu responds to keyboard, screen stays black.
Starting a game by pressing 'enter' three times. Music indicates game started,
but screen stays black. Printed dozens of times the line:
fixme:ddraw:Main_DirectDraw_WaitForVerticalBlank
(0x7fdffb48)->(flags=0x00000001,handle=(nil))
Clicking the game screen makes it appear and draw correctly. The game is now
completely playable, until you try to go back to the pre-game menus, then screen
becomes black again, but keyboard and sounds respond as they should.
After quitting Diablo, the window disapperas, but Wine stays running, not
releasing the terminal it was run from, until Ctrl+c.
------------------
Wine from the CVS, Oct 2, 2005
Works exactly like Sep 27 CVS version, except the address in the output is
0x7fdffb70 instead of 0x7fdffb48.

It's seems there are several versions of Myst. The readme file says it's Myst 1.0.3.
Anyway, this is obvious than DosDefineDevice does not do the right thing and it

Summary: DosDefineDevice breaking mapping to unix folders
Product: Wine
Version: CVS
Platform: Other
OS/Version: other
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-kernel
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: titan.costa(a)wanadoo.fr
It seems there is something wrong with DosDefineDevice.
If we consider a drive declared as F: -> /mnt/win_e
Remapping the drive F: to G: with this function leads to F: -> G: with G: non
defined.
This makes, in my case, my app to break all my drives assignement.
It's seems the code lacks a level of inderection as shown below:
Logical drive -> Real drive -> unix dir

I tried the installer and the panel for the main game, and its exceedingly
slow, but does come up eventually (about 1 min for me).
I dont know why there's such a slow performance (but i havent tried it under
windows either...) but I'm not sure its the same problem as originally
reported.

In addition, the game can now switch correctly to fullscreen mode,

Music and sound effects work less-than perfect (scratching, premature

Now a surprise. While I've fixed the bug that prevents the first screen from
being displayed, the installer breaks with the same type of error on third (or
so) screen - *regardless* if I'm using native or builtin version of
riched32/riched20.
The bug was in EM_LINELENGTH handler, and is fixed by replacing the
corresponding if statement in editor.c by:
if (item_end)
nNextLineOfs = ME_CharOfsFromRunOfs(editor, ME_FindItemFwd(item_end,
diRun), 0);
else
nNextLineOfs = ME_FindItemFwd(item,
diParagraphOrEnd)->member.para.nCharOfs-(editor->bEmulateVersion10?2:1);
I'll send a patch once the previous one gets accepted.

Where to start? :)
First off, if any major change is implemented that will probably or definitely
cause widespread regressions, it is arguable that the policy should be to have a
legacy switch until the new system has been tested and fixed. Shipping a broken
implementation with no fallback is bad practice and actively prevents me from
testing new Wine releases, bug fixes or not.
Note that this also addresses the 'upgrade or we don't support you' point made
by James Hawkins : I cannot test because the app is completely unusable as a
result of this all-or-nothing approach. I reported the issue as soon as I was
aware of it and spent a good deal of time finding out what patch broke the
system (I suspect many would not have bothered). Those with the intimate
knowledge of Wine haven't been able to fix it yet, for one reason or another
(motivation strikes me as a troublesome reason, given the size and impact of
this problem, but I don't question it). That leaves me out in the cold. I simply
don't have time to learn how to hack on Wine - my days are very busy with RL
stuff (especially at the moment) - and even if I could, those who wrote the code
are likely in a better position to fix it or provide a fallback method.
Without wanting to appear obnoxious, the delay on getting a fix to this issue
also impacts my willingness to test new releases. This issue remains in place 8
months after it was reported and very close to a 1.0 release. What purpose
testing and reporting bugs if the result is no change? I appreciate that
volunteers are working on the code and have in fact a current license for
CodeWeavers CXO product. CodeWeavers wash their hands of the problem because
this isn't a supported app; in fact with the previous code it could very well
have been and I could have easily demonstrated this. Right now, though, this
single issue is preventing that. Volunteers are not obliged to fix this either,
I know. I'm not saying that they should, but am making the case for a policy
change to implement compatibility switch in order to prevent this kind of major
breakage being a blocker in future. I activate the compatibility switch and can
immediately upgrade Wine without losing my ability to use apps that worked
before; I can still test the new code by removing the compatiblity switch. Easy,
effective and painless for almost everyone.
Lionel, I'm afraid your reply makes the case for a compatibility policy for
major changes. I'm relying on your level of motivation for a fix. It's therefore
completely open-ended in terms of when a fix might be implemented, if at all.
That's entirely your right as a contributor, but doesn't help any of those folks
affected by this change. Your code ends up being untested because either the
users go back to Windows (possibly swearing off Wine for life - worse still if
they were developers looking at Wine for making a linux release of their app) or
they run an old version of Wine.
Wine is a major part of the linux desktop scenario and it needs to be reliable
(even as alpha software) and reasonably well planned. Until this issue, for me
it was. If you cannot find the motivation to fix it, some wider publicity of the
problem would perhaps be beneficial - maybe someone else can fix it.

OK, the game runs quite smoothly. I concluded It must be DirectDraw, because I
can't tell any visual Difference or a Difference in Speed independent of the
Graphics Driver choice( Direct Draw HAL or User/GDI ). Max Payne2 at least
reports it as Direct3D HAL , which is a bit clearer. Wouldn't it be possible

On this point the fault would be mostly mine (I wrote the original OpenGL
support) as when discussing with AJ during WineConf2004 I found out that GL
would be broken as soon as the new WM code would be merged in and so had about
one year to write the code 'un-breaking' it but never found the motivation.
Anyway, as most Open Source project, refactoring is often done in a more drastic
way than in commercial projects (i.e. 'legacy' code is removed even if it breaks
things). This for two reasons: a cleaner code baseline and to provide motivation
for peole to fix the issues (otherwise the legacy code would remain in the tree
for ages).
And as this GL provlem is present in the tree for months now, it seems that
nobody is really motivated to fix it.
As for Codeweavers' tree, which is more in line with the support you would
expect from a commercial company, well, just buy it and get them to support your
favourite application so as to get them to fix the issue for you :-)

The real question is: does the game work ? I tried with my copy and while I can
only select between User and HAL (both the same actually) the game is still 3D
accelerated.
So could you try playing the game and see if it works and close the bug if yes ?
Basically, as we had no real reason to do so, Wine does not report the same
DirectX strings than real Windows (i.e. we do not try to detect the user's
videocard and report the same string Windows would when querying the driver name
/ revision).

I'm not sure, but it looks like the installer is really paranoid about the
license, and not just writes the content, but also checks if the contents is as
it supposed to be. At least I can't explain why it does EM_STREAMOUT on some
subset of the text?
However, the bug itself is related to something that the control does (or does
not) related to EM_EXGETSEL in 1.0 emulation mode. I'll take look at that.

The URL here didnt work, but a google for MC5DEMO found the program. The good
news is the program appears to work fine, the bad news is only if +relay debug
channel is on.
I've been investigating the cause, and it is some stack corruption in
RegisterClass.
A simple workaround is to modify dlls\user\wnd16.c:
ATOM WINAPI RegisterClass16( const WNDCLASS16 *wc )
{
char temp[100]; /* Add this line */
WNDCLASSEX16 wcex;
With this in place, it starts fine and appears usable (although since I have
no idea whats going on, its a guess).
Investigating the stack corruption further

1.
It is not because most users have a dangerous behavior for the system security
that I have to do like them.
An administrator must not install a Beta software as root.
2.
I mean that correcting this bug will enhance the already good wizard. Moreover,
the changes will not affect other use cases.
3.
New testers could be recruited if wine could be installed by normal user. Think
about students at university which have:
- a limited amount of disk space
- limited rights of their account
They can not grant all rights, nor use source directory as install sandbox (i.e.
keep the huge amount of source code with binaries).

So, it appears that in the cases where Steam freezes, it is stuck in
dump_memory_info, writing a 3.3G file onto my disk, since that's the size of
dc[0]->size. I'm very happy that I discovered this, because I've erased the
files in question, and freed up lots of wasted space.
Now... if I could figure out why it wants to dump the memory in the first place...
There's obviously some kind of an assertion that fails..but why. I have a 150 MB
log file with trace enabled for everything - let me know what to grep for, and I
can post the result here.
