Even though we're coming close to a stable release, .9, Wine is still alpha right now. That means there are going to be lots of bugs. We planned the WM rewrite knowing that lots of apps would stop working as a consequence; that's just the result of an evolving code base such as Wine. Promoting users to use older versions of wine until specific apps start working again is not a good solution. New features wouldn't be tested, and regressions wouldn't be caught. The term "the last-known-good version of Wine" is relative to each user's experience. My last-known-good version of Wine is today's CVS. Most distribution packagers aren't going to provide old versions of Wine, and if you happened to have a bug with an old version, the developers wouldn't be able to help you out (the bug was probably fixed already). The current version doesn't and there is no workaround/fix except downgrading Wine. That kind of breakage would put off a good number of people from using wine for any kind of development purpose. It would have been better to retain the choice until bugs in the new code were hammered out (such as this one). If I were a commercial vendor looking at something like Winelib for porting an application, I suspect I would be less than encouraged by this all-or-nothing approach to evolving the system. I don't dispute that many other apps have seen their behaviour improve with the change - I'm simply suggesting that having two systems side-by-side would be a better option at the moment. Once this and other issues have been resolved in the new code, the old code could be removed. b) The old working version of Wine is not packaged for current distributions. The user is left with a choice of attempting to install a package for an older distribution (potentially also conflicting with any newer version of wine that they care to install) or with compiling from source. That's not particularly friendly and those users coming from Windows who are determined enough to go this far will be few and far between (noting that Windows folks are not generally disposed to filing bug reports following years of being ignored by many vendors). It may also die with a similar error message (see below) during other actions, like loading. If it doesn't die at the first savegame, it can take several more before it goes down. Sound pops aggressively before death but sound pops anyway during all loading/waiting screens. I tried to search the web and bug database but didn't found much. I guess this might be related to the differences between linux and fbsd mallocs. Moreover, even with the previous WM code I was thinking about going the PBuffer way as it was the only way to really map to what Windows does (like being able to change the OpenGL visual 'on the fly'). I compiled WINE 20050930 from sources using the 'tools/wineinstall' method. wine --version Wine 20050930 The program starts up, but comes up with "Access violation at address 0046F351 in module 'GraphPap.exe'. Reead of address at 000000A0" in a windows box. This may be related to trying to draw the graph paper (that box is blank). Note: An older version of this program fails to install. I can submit that as a seperate bug report for those working on the installer. I *really* wish that the new window management system had been implemented alongside the older system, possibly with a command line switch or environment variable to set the mode to be used. At least that way those with apps affected by this change wouldn't now be completely blocked from using newer wine releases. This genuinely sucks and the wiki 'solutions' don't seem particularly ideal. Is there no hope of getting the old WM code put back in for legacy support until the new WM code is working for these affected apps? This impacts CXO/Codeweavers as well, making everything after their 3.0.1 release unusable for apps affected by this issue. That's a lot of breakage to be shipping in Wine 1.0 and commercial products based on Wine (which pay some of the developers to work on Wine, let's not forget). If nothing can be done with the current code (or by simply having two wine versions - one with the new window manager code and the other with the old implementation), could packagers be encouraged to provide working legacy packages based on the last-known-good January source (e.g. wine-legacy) for current distributions? First problem: I installed wine using installpkg executed the installation program using wine SteamInstall.exe, the program installed fine so I executed the program, the program udates it self and ask to install mozilla activex program, I click yes and nothing happens. I solved this one copying my steam installation from windows to linux. Second problem: After doing that the program ask me the login and password but I can`t type the password. I solved this clicking in forgot password and after clicking in back button. After that the program allowed me to type the password. Third problem: Finally the last problem occurs after clicking in login button. The program shows the login procedure but stops in a error that I cant work around. WIne shows some garbage and the error: "err:ole:CoGetClassObject class {4955dd33-b159-11d0-8fcf-00aa006bcc59} not registered". This last one I couldn't find a solution. Any aditional information can be asked by email. With WINEDEBUG=warn+all, the relevant messages (repeated for each attempt to play a file) appear to be: warn:file:CreateFileW Unable to create file L"D:\\lavamind\\zap\\sound\\lavamind.wav" (status c00000a2) warn:file:OpenFile (D:\lavamind\zap\sound\lavamind.wav): return = HFILE_ERROR error= 19 warn:mciwave:WAVE_mciOpen can't find file=L"D:\\lavamind\\zap\\sound\\lavamind.wav"! warn:mci:mciGetDriverData Bad uDeviceID I believe the problem is related to mciOpen attempting to open the file with write access because of the error 19 (defined in winerror.h as ERROR_WRITE_PROTECT). To test this, I mounted a tmpfs over the directory containing the audio files on the CD and copied all audio to that tmpfs and added write permissions. The files were then correctly played in wine without the above errors. This bug may be an error in the Zapitalism Deluxe program (asking for write permissions when they are not needed), but it appears that (on line 392 of mciwave.c) WAVE_mciOpen calls mmioOpenW with MMIO_READWRITE in all cases. Please take that as just a quick suggestion, you are the experts and have a lot more experience than I. I know for myself filing an accurate and complete bug report is a significant investment of my too scarce time. When installing Picasa2, the user cannot scroll through the full License Agreement. To reproduce: 1. wget http://toolbar.google.com/picasa/picasa2-setup-1884.exe 2. wine picasa2-setup-1884.exe 3. click on scrollbar on the right of license text window and drag it to the bottom. The scrollbar hits the bottom, but the agreement text ends in midsentence: "The Picasa Software may communicate with Google's servers to check for available updates to the Picasa Software, such as bug fixes, patches, enhanced functions, missing plug-ins and new versions (" When installing this on Windows the license agreement continues for many more paragraphs before it reaches the end. The problem seems to be that the maintainers of jack_fst didn't want to commit the small workaround to the code tree and the existing source doesn't work unless it is so it currently falls to the user to do this. I'm unclear as to what state this puts things in as fars as bugs.winehq.org is concerned. I'd truly like to see jack_fst fixed somehow. Since a good portion of this is really Linux code that works only with Wine is there any method to have Wine helper apps brought under Wine's umbrella so that this wasn't really an Alsa/Jack developers issue but something that could be worked on within Wine's sphere of influence? This might be best done as part of Wine trully supporting Jack, and maybe that's best done later. I don't know. As I said early on, there are literally 1000's of VSTs out there. Finding a way to run them correctly and consistently under Wine would be a cool way to pump up the number of Windows apps that work under Wine. If this was an 'application' I could easily get 50-100 people to come vote for it in a few days. It would be very popular. Then again, I'm not a developer so I don't know the real ins and outs of this request. I'm also OK with completely closing the bug with a 'Will not fix' decision if need be. This is normally caused by bad installation media or a corrupt installation file. I hit abort and get another dialog box that tells me the installation aborted. It's an old version but the only one I have. The installation failed pretty quickly.
