A native MCIAVI is not enough. msvfw32.dll is the key dll.
Current CVS with a patch I sent a couple of days ago should help.
Not all of the mentioned MCIWNDM messages are supported at the moment,
I'm working on it.

My wine version is 20031212 Fedora Core 1.
A typical run with nscd disabled:
bash-2.05b$ winemine
wine: Unhandled exception (thread 0009), starting debugger...
wine: Unhandled exception (thread 000b), starting debugger...
And so it goes on until ctrl-c is pressed. Then I get:
err:seh:EXC_DefaultHandling Unhandled exception code c000013a flags 0 addr 0x400f7cd6
err:seh:EXC_DefaultHandling Unhandled exception code c000013a flags 0 addr 0x400f7cd6
And so on.
On a stand alone installation of Fedora without LDAP there is no problem. Seems like wine can't
wait for the LDAP information to reach it. With caching on, everything works.

I have a similar problem. I don't get a segfault though, but never ending threads that ends with
an Unhandled exception. My setup consists of a linuxbox that gets all authentication from LDAP.
The root user kan run wine just fine, ordinary users cannot. Root isn't authenticated from LDAP.
Running a name-cache on the klient solves the problem. If I start nscd, everything works fine.

We recommend not pointing the Windows Installation
as WINE directories, but instead creating a seperate "fake windows"
tree, and just copy over the dlls that are needed.

got it. accidentally, from wine-devel:
all things stood up into their places when i ran wine like this:
WINELOADER=`which wine` wine /home/s2/cc/Program\ Files/winled/ledw.exe
hence, the question is risen: what did i miss? where is it said i should point
WINELOADER to wine binary? and when should i do it?
huge thanks goes for explanation in advance.

Mike,
I am not a developer, more of an end user with a little knowledge - which, as we
all know, is a dangerous thing. So, I shall own up that I am really out of my
depth here. I don't want to fill this thread with dubious or speculative
information. My last effort would be to ask you to consider submitting a patch
to remove the two divisions by 1000, for now, to see what the aftermath is.
One final comment, which may or may not be relevant to why some apps crash
without the division: because modern processors can execute instructions out of
sequence, it might be necessary to immediately precede the RDTSC with a CPUID
instruction to serialise it.
It might be worthwhile taking the issue to the wider community. Would you be
willing to post something to the developers' forum featured in the Wine Weekly
Newsletter?

This seems to be a bug from the category: "Doctor, if i do this it hurts.",
"Then stop doing it." You can probably close the bug.

By the way, it's acting kind of funny. The newest installation (wineinstall)
from CVS created a c folder in my home directory, but create a config file, so I
used winesetuptk, which made fake_windows in my .wine folder. When I installed
a program, it put it in the fake_windows folder, but there's some kind of
installShield folder in the C directory. Is this a problem? Is the setup
wacked? Why didn't wineinstall create a config in the first place?

Hello Marcus: Thanks for your reply, do you have any guidance about this issue?First, does any body have Terragen running under Redhat 9.0 or Mandrake 8.2 or Mandrake 8.1? Second, did you get past selecting a color-related function like Edit Cloud Color or similar function like Edit Surface Layer Color operation? These operations cause my Terragen to just freeze. Thanks for any help at all, including install pointers, especially regarding DLL installation... or any help with freeze issue (bug?).Wine 20020605 and Terragen 0.8.44Michael - Graphics & Engineering http://www.bowlvisions.com/

It's a xp only app. The installer starts, asks to upgrade the windows installer,
and reports it can't perform the upgrade. I'll attach a relay trace.
I'm using wine CVS current (20031216) on mdk 9.2 (kernel 2.4.22-21tmb) and glibc 2.3

There are 2 versions os the installer, one for windows xp only, and one for
windows 98se/me/2000/xp. The XP installer fails saying that you can only install
it on windows xp, even if you set winver to xp or 2k3, so xp emulation obviously
isn't working as it should. The other installer starts, but says that it can't
find current updates. After clicking OK, the setup exits and wine crashes, the
log is

Summary: Wine does not trim trailing spaces from LoadLibrary
calls
Product: Wine
Version: 20030813
Platform: Other
OS/Version: other
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-misc
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.com
ReportedBy: frederic.howell(a)powertechlabs.com
Because of a bug in one of my Windows programs, I was issuing
h=LoadLibrary("frq ");
This loaded frq.dll on Win2K, which is what I wanted.
However on a fake-windows install of Wine-20030813, the call fails. I see from
the module trace's that wine tries to load
"frq .dll",
which does not exist. I could work around this by copying frq.dll to
"frq .dll".
This does bring up the question of which dll would get loaded in Win2K if I had
both frq.dll and "frq .dll" It turns out that frq.dll still
gets loaded (if one is to believe the Output window in VS). If no frq.dll
exists, but only "frq .dll" exists, then the LoadLibrary call
fails(!). My conclusion for Win2K is that trailing spaces should always be
trimmed for LoadLibrary, if no extension is present in module name. If the
extension is present, then Win2K will load the module with spaces in the filename.

This bug has a fairly easy solution: the default config file, /documentation/
samples/config, had /mnt/fd0 as the floppy directory. I would suggest either
adding a way to detect the mounted floppy drive (since /mnt/floppy isn't
universal), or adding a line to the install script something like test -d /
mnt/floppy || echo "Your floppy drive isn't mounted at /mnt/floppy. Please do
X, Y, Z." (Note: replace X, Y, Z with actual stuff) I've written a program
that adds a drive to the Wine configuration file at 24.194.10.72.

The message most liklely is:
"You must copy a 'stdole32.tlb' file to your Windows\\System directory!\n
You can get one from a Windows installation, or look for the DCOM95 package\n
on the Microsoft Download Pages.\n"
You can also get dcom95 from the Support Files on the Download page on http://

Install it by doing:

and you should have a stdole32.tlb in your windows/system directory.

------- Additional Comments From Andrew.Talbot(a)talbotville.com 2003-13-12 15:38 -------
Mike,
There seems to be at least a third source for high-performance timers: the ACPI
Power Management Timer, which clocks away at 3.579545 MHz! (See
http://lkml.org/lkml/2003/11/17/138.)
I suspect that systems with a QPF of 1.193180 MHz (e.g. Win98SE) might use PIT
channel 2, whereas those with a QPF of 3.579545 MHz possibly use the ACPI PM
Timer.
Linux source file /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/kernel/time.c is an interesting read.
I think the next step might be to post a query to a Linux kernel Usenet group,
to verify/disprove these assertions.

Would this also explain the wierd behaviour we've seen with some apps crashing

I ran the program in winedbg (log attached). The important lines are:
First chance exception: page fault on read access to 0x00000000 in 32-bit code
(0x40227519)
0x40227519 (NTDLL.DLL.ZwWriteFile+0xd9 in NTDLL.DLL): movl 0x0(%edx),%eax
I also checked the interesting differences between the working WineX-version and
the current Wine:
grep WriteFile winex/dlls/ntdll/*
winex/dlls/ntdll/ntdll.spec:@ stub NtWriteFile
winex/dlls/ntdll/ntdll.spec:@ stub ZwWriteFile
winex/dlls/ntdll/ntdll.spec:@ stub NtWriteFileGather
root@z1709 work # grep WriteFile wine-20031118/dlls/ntdll/*
wine-20031118/dlls/ntdll/file.c: * NtWriteFile
[NTDLL.@]
wine-20031118/dlls/ntdll/file.c: * ZwWriteFile [NTDLL.@]
wine-20031118/dlls/ntdll/file.c:NTSTATUS WINAPI NtWriteFile(HANDLE hFile, HANDLE
hEvent,
wine-20031118/dlls/ntdll/ntdll.spec:@ stdcall NtWriteFile(long long ptr ptr ptr
ptr long ptr ptr)
wine-20031118/dlls/ntdll/ntdll.spec:@ stdcall ZwWriteFile(long long ptr ptr ptr
ptr long ptr ptr) NtWriteFile
wine-20031118/dlls/ntdll/ntdll.spec:@ stub NtWriteFileGather
Does that mean that ZwWriteFile is not implemented in the current WineX at all
and that's the reason why WineX works and Wine doesn't?

Mike,
OK, here are some results that spoil the party! Because I didn't want to overdo
the detail earlier, I deliberately omitted to mention that the Programmable
Interval Timer chip is fed from a crystal which oscillates at 3.579545 MHz,
(which just happens to be the chroma frequency for NTSC-N). Divide this by
three and you get 1.193182 MHz. Now, it was rumoured that some PCs use the 3x
clock straight, but I was sceptical - big mistake!
I have just tested five PCs from three different UK manufacturers, ranging from
a P2/400MHz to a P4/2.4GHz, most with Windows XP Professional, one with XP Home
Edition and, guess what, yep, they *all* show a QPF of 3579545!
I think it is true to say that Microsoft do not state what frequency one is
going to get when one uses the High-Performance Counter. So, I am rapidly being
drawn to the conclusion that we should forget about the RDTSC instruction
completely and just concentrate on getting whatever the PIT chip provides. I
gather this 82C54 chip takes the 3.58-MHz signal (as used by XP) and produces a
divided-by-three output (1.19 MHz, as used by Win98) and a
divided-by-a-further-65536 (18.2 Hz) output.

Mike,
Under Windows 98SE, on my P3/450, I ran your test2.exe program twice, with a
nominal twenty seconds between each run. Subtracting the two QPCs and dividing
by the timing period gave (472313655 - 448390410) / 20 = 1196162 ticks per
second. QPF was reported as 1193180: remarkably close. QPC, of course,
represents the number of clock ticks since switch-on. Programs can measure time
intervals by dividing differences in QPC by QPF, (i.e. tick-count-difference
divided by ticks-per-second = seconds elapsed) so the scalings have to be
consistent.
On my 'unscaled' version of Wine (SUSE 9.0), I also made two runs, this time
roughly thirty seconds apart, and got (191677227390 - 178935563205) / 30 =
424722139.5 counts per second from the two QPCs, with QPF given as 451054000.
Not bad for a crude, manual test.
It seems that versions of Windows <= Win98SE may have used the Programmable
Interrupt Timer (8254) chip, with its 1.19 Mhz clock (even on PCs with
RDTSC-capable processors). However, I suspect that other versions of Windows
(i.e. the more 'corporate' varieties: NT, Win2k, XP) might actually use the
RDTSC instruction, if available, thus providing the nanosecond-order resolution
of which the CPU clocks of modern computers are capable. So, perhaps the clock
that Wine uses for the High-Performance Timer functions (CPU vs. PIT) should
depend not only on the availability of the RDTSC instruction, but also on which
version of Windows that Wine is set to emulate.
I shall seek to run your program on at least one Win XP Pro machine to see which
clock that uses and shall report back here.
-- Andy.

This program: http://www.nimar.net/soft/OOK3_Manager_1_7_2_by_NiMar.zip
which is freely available, used to work flawlessly with Wine for quite some time
(until roughly a year ago) and it still works allright with current WineX-CVS.
But with recent versions of Wine I get this Error-Message popping up whenever
the program is trying to communicate with the phone (i.e. Press the 'Refresh'
button):
'Access violation at address 400A1BOA. Read of address 00000000'
That message only appears at the first attempt to read/write from the serial
port though, the program doesn't crash. At any further attemps the Message
'unable to init GBP-mode' appears, which is the expected behaviour when there's
some communication error or no phone attached to the specified serial port at all.
The debugmsgs didn't yield any interesting details, but I could of course
provide some logs if you are interested.
