Hi onederer,
Wine project itself does not provide binary packages and does not control any
Wine distributions, provided by anybody else, as stated on the download page:
http://www.winehq.com/download/
In this particular you can contact Mandrake mailing lists or tech support for
help about their packages. You can also contact wine-users(a)winehq.com mailing
list for help. There are probably other people who run Wine on this particular
distribution.
Are you sure you removed all the old Wine files before installing the package?
Here you can find instructions how to do total cleanup:
http://www.winehq.org/fom-meta/cache/1.html
Try to do this and reinstall the Wine rmp.
If the binary package still does not work for you do again total cleanup and try
to install it from source. Usually it is fairly simple. The README file with the
source provides very good instructions how to do that and you can expect much
more help from us as we are responsible for it.

Summary: Missing files in new installation. Mandrake i586.
Product: Wine
Version: unspecified
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: major
Priority: P2
Component: wine-files
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.com
ReportedBy: onederer(a)myrealbox.com
Missing wine related files in Mandrake 8.2 RPM distribution. Would not run "out of the box". Complained of missing lib.wine.so, lib.nt.so.
Had to search Internet to find missing library files.
After that, it could not successfully run a single Windows app, to conclusion. Kept on complaining to add 'WinMM' section to Wine config. file.
I don't have the faintest clue what is needed to do this.
There is no config file in /etc/wine/. Only registry files are there. If the registry files is the "config" file, then that should be clarified.
There is a BLANK config file in /home/~user~/.wine. Wine will now not run because it is complaining about this blank 'config' file.
Loose related wine lib.xxx files should be part of the package, and not spread out over the internet.
Missing WinMM section in Wine config. file should be taken care of by the "experts".
They know what has to be entered there. I surely don't! How well controlled is the bundling of the Wine package? Is it a loose arrangement?
Did Mandrake miss the bandwagon?
This is what makes 'newbies' give up, quit, and go back to Win**.

Bug 969 turned out to be still present, but to determine if we have the same
problem you could help a lot by enabling debugmsg=+relay, for a start.

Since you typed "wine /cdrom/install.exe", can I assume that you were not in the
/cdrom directory when you executed that? As a general rule, you should be in the
directory containing the installer when running them. They are sometimes picky
about that.

When I try to run the warcraft 3 installer from linux:

Nothing happens. It doesn't exit, it just sits there. When I press ^C it says
'Terminated' and exits.
I'm running kernel 2.4.19, under slackware linux. I'm using wine CVS as of
08/14/02. I'm using a fake windows install with C: as /winedrv, and I'm using
[Version]"windows"="win98". Wine does work sometimes, as I can play
halflife/counterstrike just fine under it, so I don't think it's a
configuration problem. I don't know what debug options to use for a useful
log, so if a log would be useful, email me and I'll send one.

We get several mails from people willing to translate some parts of Wine
documentation into foreign (and entirely alien ;-) languages.
We should have a common framework set up for doing this very regularly,
consistently and well.
I'd suggest that we create a web page for every language with a database backend
which creates a new translation ticket for every documentation patch of Wine for
every language involved (one ticket page per language).
(e.g. by Alexandre CC'ing documentation patches to this system)
Then everyone who is involved with translating documentation could commit the
translation for his language into the *foreign language Wine cvs tree*
and close the corresponding translation ticket on this language webpage.
Once a month an automated build process would take the entire foreign language
CVS tree and build new documentation for the web page to download.
(the idea would be that the main Wine CVS tree would still only contain English
docu, with a short hint at where to get foreign documentation, in the README file)
Someone would have to be willing to develop this for us, though.
Any takers ?
One guy willing to do some translation work is (add others here, too !):

This has come through a few iterations to satisfy Alexandre, and only a partial
implementation has made it into CVS. Uwe's latest patch has not yet been
committed to CVS. So if what is in CVS does not work, you might want to also apply:
http://www.winehq.com/hypermail/wine-patches/2002/08/0013.html
This is necessary and works well for me on Xilinx ISE.

Now I tryed again with 20020804 build.
However it doesn't even start the installer.
I get an dialog saying:

It seems to me that the problem is with mpr.

Summary: Intermittent regression tests freeze, possibly due to
thread race condition.
Product: Wine
Version: CVS
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: NEW
Severity: normal
Priority: P2

[Comments made about CVS just after Tue, 13 Aug 2002 19:44:01 +01:00 (BST) updates]
Whilst conducting the regression tests (as part of the rolling CVS regression
testing) I discovered a problem. With the version set to "win20", the process
froze at one of the wininet DLL tests. This has happened before (see [1]), but
it only occurs when emulating one of the 16-bit version of Windows (ie "win20",
"win30" or "win31") and never for other versions.
Sylvain has reported [2] problems with the wininet regression tests. The
symptoms are the same, but for me the problem is only intermittent. Once I found
an example of the problem, I haven't been able to reproduce it - even with
identical CVS trees.
When the problem occurred, I attached gdb to the process and got the following info:
[...]

#9 0x400b3f3f in call_on_thread_stack (func=0x400afd2c)
at ../../scheduler/sysdeps.c:108
So, to summarise (with some extra bits of information):
The problem occurs when wininet/tests/http.c is testing asynchronous
HttpSendRequest() (so flags > 0). The problem is triggered at line 121 of
http.c, i.e.:
120 while ((flags)&&(!goon))
121 Sleep(100);
Sleep(), in turn, just calls WaitForMultipleObjectsEx(). From
scheduler/synchro.c:
176 VOID WINAPI Sleep( DWORD timeout )
177 {
178 WaitForMultipleObjectsEx( 0, NULL, FALSE, timeout, FALSE );
179 }
WaitForMultipleObjectsEx() has problems when it gets to 257:
256 SERVER_END_REQ;
257 if (ret == STATUS_PENDING) ret = wait_reply( &cookie );
258 if (ret != STATUS_USER_APC) break;
In this case, ret is 1079729528, btw.
AFAIK, __DTOR_END__ (see near bottom of stack) is the destructor for a
function call in ntdll. I'm probably missing something obvious, but I
don't see the connection between scheduler/synchro.c:257 and ntdll. The
closest is wait_reply() (in scheduler/client.c) calls wait_reply_data (in
same file), which calls NtCurrentTeb(), which is commented as an NTDLL
function. But there doesn't seem to be an implementation of NtCurrentTeb
in ntdll.
HTH
Paul.

This is what Microsofts documentation has to say about MaskBlt
Windows GDI
MaskBlt
The MaskBlt function combines the color data for the source and destination
bitmaps using the specified mask and raster operation.
BOOL MaskBlt(
HDC hdcDest, // handle to destination DC
int nXDest, // x-coord of destination upper-left corner
int nYDest, // y-coord of destination upper-left corner
int nWidth, // width of source and destination
int nHeight, // height of source and destination
HDC hdcSrc, // handle to source DC
int nXSrc, // x-coord of upper-left corner of source
int nYSrc, // y-coord of upper-left corner of source
HBITMAP hbmMask, // handle to monochrome bit mask
int xMask, // horizontal offset into mask bitmap
int yMask, // vertical offset into mask bitmap
DWORD dwRop // raster operation code
);
Parameters
hdcDest
[in] Handle to the destination device context. nXDest
[in] Specifies the x-coordinate, in logical units, of the upper-left corner of
the destination rectangle. nYDest
[in] Specifies the y-coordinate, in logical units, of the upper-left corner of
the destination rectangle. nWidth
[in] Specifies the width, in logical units, of the destination rectangle and
source bitmap. nHeight
[in] Specifies the height, in logical units, of the destination rectangle and
source bitmap. hdcSrc
[in] Handle to the device context from which the bitmap is to be copied. It must
be zero if the dwRop parameter specifies a raster operation that does not
include a source. nXSrc
[in] Specifies the x-coordinate, in logical units, of the upper-left corner of
the source bitmap. nYSrc
[in] Specifies the y-coordinate, in logical units, of the upper-left corner of
the source bitmap. hbmMask
[in] Handle to the monochrome mask bitmap combined with the color bitmap in the
source device context. xMask
[in] Specifies the horizontal pixel offset for the mask bitmap specified by the
hbmMask parameter. yMask
[in] Specifies the vertical pixel offset for the mask bitmap specified by the
hbmMask parameter. dwRop
[in] Specifies both foreground and background ternary raster operation codes
that the function uses to control the combination of source and destination
data. The background raster operation code is stored in the high-order byte of
the high-order word of this value; the foreground raster operation code is
stored in the low-order byte of the high-order word of this value; the low-order
word of this value is ignored, and should be zero. The macro MAKEROP4 creates
such combinations of foreground and background raster operation codes.
For a discussion of foreground and background in the context of this
function, see the following Remarks section.
For a list of common raster operation codes, see the BitBlt function.
Return Values
If the function succeeds, the return value is nonzero.
If the function fails, the return value is zero.
Windows NT/2000/XP: To get extended error information, call GetLastError.
Remarks
The MaskBlt function uses device-dependent bitmaps.
A value of 1 in the mask specified by hbmMask indicates that the foreground
raster operation code specified by dwRop should be applied at that location. A
value of 0 in the mask indicates that the background raster operation code
specified by dwRop should be applied at that location.
If the raster operations require a source, the mask rectangle must cover the
source rectangle. If it does not, the function will fail. If the raster
operations do not require a source, the mask rectangle must cover the
destination rectangle. If it does not, the function will fail.
If a rotation or shear transformation is in effect for the source device context
when this function is called, an error occurs. However, other types of
transformation are allowed.
If the color formats of the source, pattern, and destination bitmaps differ,
this function converts the pattern or source format, or both, to match the
destination format.
If the mask bitmap is not a monochrome bitmap, an error occurs.
When an enhanced metafile is being recorded, an error occurs (and the function
returns FALSE) if the source device context identifies an enhanced-metafile
device context.
Not all devices support the MaskBlt function. An application should call the
GetDeviceCaps function to determine whether a device supports this function.
If no mask bitmap is supplied, this function behaves exactly like BitBlt, using
the foreground raster operation code.
ICM: No color management is performed when blits occur.
Windows 2000/XP: When used in a multiple monitor system, both hdcSrc and hdcDest
must refer to the same device or the function will fail. To transfer data
between DCs for different devices, convert the memory bitmap (compatible bitmap,
or DDB) to a DIB by calling GetDIBits. To display the DIB to the second device,
call SetDIBits or StretchDIBits.
Requirements
Windows NT/2000/XP: Included in Windows NT 3.1 and later.
Windows 95/98/Me: Unsupported.
Header: Declared in Wingdi.h; include Windows.h.
Library: Use Gdi32.lib.

broke the app (worse than it already is) is described here
http://www.winehq.org/Docs/wine-devel/cvs-regression.shtml
I know that you have some trepidation about compiling from source but it is very
easy. Also once you have it set up as CVS it is a snap to keep up to date with
wine. the following link explains how to set up wine via CVS.

with wine set to "win98" the screen shows up with what look like 4 blank

thing to do is implement the function.<grin>

"Managed" = "N" is not recomended as default setting (too many problems). After
you have tested them in desktop or managed mode. If they run OK you can set it
that way for individual programs using the appdefaults sections if you want to.
As far as the problem of wine trying to write to "usr/lib/menu/wine" I really
have no ideas. There is probabably a bug there, but it would require that you
look at the code in the debugger which you can't with the striped rpm. If you
want to install from source its not that hard.
If I understand you correctly you were able to install the program. So if this
is the case could you mark the bug as resolved (probably WORKSFORME) and start
individual bug reports for any problems that you encounter actually running the
program.

When I click on the first menu item the application generates page fault on an
attempt to access 0x00000000 address (NULL pointer?).
This happens in procedure PBVM60.DLL.PBE_FmtFormatData.
Ligi, is PowerBuilder provided with sources of the runtime library? If yes it
would be great if you could find source of the abovementioned function.

Hello, I'm running an out of the box install of slackware 8.1. I compiled the
lastest release of wine. 20020804.
I don't currently have any copies of windows, so it may be a dll issue, not
entirley sure.
In any case, when it attempts to connect to the update server without any wait
it tells me it cannot connect to the server. the wine console does not put out
any error messages. I know that winsock works ok on my system, so I am unsure
what the issue could be.

Tony, thanks for your help. My debugger is working fine with other programs, so
that wasn't the problem. Using the Desktop = Y option in wine's config fixed
it. Apparently without, the dialog box was popping up off my screen, with me
having no way of knowing it was there.
The interesting thing is that during installation, it opened a separate
"Windows" desktop, so that there were two open for installation.
Once installed, both closed. It installed successfully, but also gave me the

Sorry for the holdups.
It is not crashing afterall. I can't tell if this is a bug or some "feature" I
change modify...
The setup program opens a window that takes up my whole screen, however, there
are no user inputs. Just some graphics. It seems it is still "freezing" at a
certain point even though it's not crashing. I have to ctrl-alt-F1 to a console
in order to kill wine to get my X usable again. The last lines shown in the
console running the windows setup program with +trace are attached.

I visited the mentioned URL. The current version of Pinboll is Tech Beta 6. It
requires a lot of other Windows components, so I'm not sure if this is the
version you used. I checked Wine sources - CryptHashData function is
implemenented now.
Reporter, do you still have the application? What version is this?
Can you still reproduce the issue with recent Wine?

While trying to make sense of bug 745 I ran across this bug. The problem is that
if I change the default values in winedebug those values are not saved to the
registry.
When I ran a trace using --debugmsg +wineconsole,+reg I get some indication as
to why. It looks like it is not finding the registry entries in order to update
them.
trace:wineconsole:WINECON_RegSave saving registry settings.

If I change the values using regedit they are read by winedbg and wcmd but they
seem to be ignored by both programs when creating the window. The only registry
settings that seem to be used are those for the font settings.
It concerns me that both winedbg and wcmd would share the same registry settings
in the first place since they are totally different programs, and in my mind
should have setting that are independent to each other.

Summary: Win3.1 program function keys and ALT/SHIFT/CTRL don't
work.
Product: Wine
Version: unspecified
Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: RESOLVED
Severity: normal
Priority: P1
Component: wine-misc
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.com
ReportedBy: vwdowns(a)bigfoot.com
Running CodeWeavers Wine release 20001026, a Windows 3.1 program (AS/400
terminal emulation package) doesn't acknowlege function key presses properly,
nor does it handle ALT/CTRL/SHIFT variations of normal key presses. I believe
the program was based on a DOS program, so it may be using very old APIs
internally, which appear to not be fully backward compatible.
If someone wants to work on this bug, please contact me at vwdowns(a)bigfoot.com,
and I can set you up with a copy of the program (it's proprietary, but I can do
this for testing purposes) to reproduce the problem.
Getting this working could be a boon for Linux in our business. Thanks in
advance...

I downloaded and installed the program netskat from the site and I could not
reproduce the error. This however is not conclusive as the game is in german and
I do not read or speak it as well as I would like. Also there does not seem to
be a download for winskat pro but if I understand the site correctly then
netskat is an upgrade from winskat. so for the purposes of testing and resolving
this bug report we should be able to use it.
If someone who can speak german better than myself could test this program I
would appreciate it.

It doesn't seem to be a color problem but a column index problem in all WinMX
application.
In fact in place of the filename it shows the size field right-aligned and all
othe fields shifted left consequently.
Same problem can be noted also in the download tab.

Have you tried Alt-F1 on your system? If it's only X locking up you should get a
text console so you can kill wine. Should work on most distros, I think.
Press Alt-F7 or something to get back to X btw :)

Tony, how do I get to the debugger prompt? I have the unstripped CVS RPM of
Wine, but when it says starting debugger, I don't see anything. Do I have to
pass options to wine when starting it?

The file trace is less usefull since the problem that required it seems to be
fixed. At this point a bt (backtrace) from the debugger would be more helpfull
along with the last 200 lines from a --debugmsg +relay before starting the debugger.

"useDGA" = "Y" Is not recommended unless your program is well behaved since it
accesses /dev/mem directly which can lock up your X session. As far as I have
been able to figure out the purpose of this setting is to squeeze an extra bit
of speed for graphics operations so that your game will play slightly faster
(better frame rates). If this game is not working right in the first place using
this setting will only make things worse.
Generally I test new programs using "desktop" = "640x480" before trying other
settings. If everything seems to work ok with a game in the desktop then I will
try "managed" = "Y" without desktop and so on.
This makes debuging the program easier. So I would suggest that you use desktop
= 640x480 and useDGA = n to start with and report what problems you encounter.

Actually it looks like that it is Wine that makes that reparenting thing,
under windows these dialogboxes have desktop window as parent. Only the owner
window should be set to main window.

Summary: X11 Window parenting
Product: Wine
Version: CVS
Platform: Other
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-x11driver
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.com
ReportedBy: tkujala(a)lut.fi
DBMGUi.exe, which is a Visual Basic 6 application uses forms to present dialogs
on screen. Under wine these dialogs do not receive any mouse input and only
partial keyboard input. Also if a form activated with ShowModal fuction opens
another dialog box, it will not even display.
After debugging I found out that VB6 (or wine?) reparents (through
X11DRV_SetParent) these dialogs to the
main form. Under wine this means that these windows become subwindows of the
main form which firstly means that these windows will never become managed if
managed mode is set to "yes". Also this means that they will not get mouse
input (because dbmgui (or vb6?)) disables the main window when form is
displayed
and therefore WindowFromPoint-function will never return anything. And finally
this means that all these forms clip incorrectly to their parent window, and
may then be completely invisible because they are created in desktop
coordinates but are actually a child of a form whose coordinates are not
desktop coordinates.
These forms seemed to have only WS_CLIPCHILDREN+WS_MAXIMIZEBOX+0x80 as style
and WS_EX_DLGMODALFRAME as ExStyle.
I was able to continue my quest with dbmgui by forcing WS_EX_DLGMODALFRAME
windows to be child of the root window and then prohibiting X11_SetParent to
set new parent for windows that have WS_EX_DLGMODALFRAME set.

So it's not crashing then right? it tries to load the scenario but fails leaving
you with what? The game you had, or a blank game?
Maybe the output of wine --debugmsg +file might tell us something as well.

Summary: ChooseFontA dialog never displays the script selection
Product: Wine
Version: CVS
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: NEW
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-gui
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.com
ReportedBy: winebugzilla(a)sun.consumer.org.il
The "ChooseFont" dialog, when not using Unicode, has an option to select which
script will be used when the font supports more than one. This option is not
implemented in WINE at the moment.
In principle, it shouldn't be too dificult to implement. All that needs to be
done is adding a combo box to the dialog layout, and filling it out with the
result of "GetFontUnicodeRanges". There is only really need to check for those
ranges that correspond to the defined charsets (SYMBOL_CHARSET,
SHIFTJIS_CHARSET, etc.).
There is, however, some need to tweak the resources. For each of these charset,
you probably need:
1. The demo text to use (locale independant).
2. The display name to use (i.e. - SHIFTJIS_CHARSET is "Japanese" if the current
locale is English, "RUSSIAN_CHARSET" is "Russian" if the current locale is
English, etc.).
It is my experience that, under Windows 2000, ChooseFontW puts this combo box
in, but disables it (ugly).

------- Additional Comments From dclark(a)akamail.com 2002-08-10 12:42 -------
This problem is being caused by this short bit of code in the function
SHGetFileInfoA(). This function starts by setting pidl to null. Then WinZip
calls this function with the flags 0x4115, which includes
SHGFI_USEFILEATTRIBUTES but not SHGFI_PIDL. With that combination of flags, this
short bit of code will always fail (return FALSE).
if (flags & SHGFI_PIDL) {
pidl = ILClone((LPCITEMIDLIST)path);
} else if (!(flags & SHGFI_USEFILEATTRIBUTES)) {
hr = SHILCreateFromPathA(path, &pidl, &dwAttributes);
}
/* get the parent shellfolder */
if (pidl) {
hr = SHBindToParent( pidl, &IID_IShellFolder, (LPVOID*)&psfParent, &pidlLast);
ILFree(pidl);
} else {
ERR("pidl is null!\n");
return FALSE;
}
Changing that last "else" to:
} else if (!(flags & SHGFI_USEFILEATTRIBUTES)) {
fixes this.

I have two programs that run at 100% percent cpu usage now:
Warcraft 3's install.exe, and blizzard provided patches.
The quick fix for these would be to use a native win95/98/me msvcrt.dll.
My guess from what the traces look like, they get stuck in an infinite loop
because of code in wine's msvcrt somewhere.
P.S. We should have people report the programs based off of the latest CVS.

Summary: Windows Media Player 6.4 audio problems (setting format

Product: Wine

Status: UNCONFIRMED

Component: wine-multimedia
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.com
ReportedBy: roz(a)one.net
When running certain MPEG videos in Media Player 6.4.07.1112 (using Windows '95
DLLs), I get the following message, along with the sound cutting in and out as
the message repeats:
err:wave:OSS_OpenDevice Can't set format to 8 (16)

fixme:dsound:IDirectSoundImpl_SetCooperativeLevel (0x4044d708,00010023,2):stub
It seems Win95 is trying to set the audio format to 8-bit, but Wine's emulation
is force-set at 16-bit. Is that what's happening? I will attach one MPEG that
gives me this error.
Let me know if you need any specific traces.

Well, ReactOS probably shouldn't compile this part anyway
(as it belongs to Win16 SHELL.DLL).
Or does NT also have a SHELL.DLL ?
Hmm, it probably does, so you do need to compile it.
In this case it sounds like KERNEL32.K32WOWGetVDMPointer() is what you want
instead...
