Summary: Wine cannot download mono
Product: Wine
Version: 10.5
Hardware: x86-64

Recently, wine seems uncapable of downloading mono. The progress bar does not
move from 0 an everything hangs. Might be an issue with wine itself or with the
servers from which mono is meant to be developed. In either case, lack of a
proper timeout and diagnostics in wine seems problematic.
To repro: `wine 'C:\windows\system32\control.exe' appwiz.cpl install_mono`

winecfg
Laptop: Lenovo G15 V4 IRU
OS: Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and 22.04 LTS
Wine versions tested: 9.0~repack-4build3, 10.0.0.0~noble-1, 10.6~noble-1
When running winecfg on a clean OS install - ole/rpcss errors occur in the
terminal. These errors prevent wine-mono to be installed and it ultimately
makes it not possible to run the windows app I want to run.
I spent some long hours troubleshooting, trying to determine the root cause of
the issue and resolve it(even wiped an entire OS to switch to the latest LTS).
There are some posts on the forums with similar wine logs, however they were
either ignored as non braking errors or solved in other or untold ways.
What ultimately helped is to enable Secure Boot in BIOS settings (???).
Now it works just fine.
No idea why. Maybe my findings will provide you with a valuable troubleshooting
info, or become one of the solutions for a problem which does not seem to have
a common source or fix.

I should be able to switch to another desktop and get a debug trace when the

(including this one) after the driver upgrade, and I've recently had similar
issues with Shantae: Pirate's Curse (also from GOG), everything other than
WINE seems to be working fine.

last step of bisect for steam client launch failure
I recently tried to run steam client on upstream wines and found that the
client will not start on any wine version 8.19 or above. I bisected the
problem to the update to mono 8.1.0. The last stage of bisect is attached.
When starting the client a ton of processes get created and then "Maximum
number of clients reached" messages get spammed infinitely on the console.
OS: Linux 5.15.140 Dist: Slackware 15.0 64 CPU: 9900k GPU: RTX 4070
I found a workaround to the problem to shut off mono as follows:
export WINEDLLOVERRIDES="mscoree="
This workaround seems OK since I don't think steam client itself relies on mono
but I am not sure some of the apps it launches wont.
Any tips or ideas what might be happening here would be appreciated. No issues
with the older wine versions up to 8.18 ran steam with mono enabled fine so I
am pretty sure some update in mono 8.10 is triggering the problem. There is a
good chance this is related to Slackware 15.0 distribution and has nothing to
do with wine or mono issue but I don't know where to start looking for the
breakage.export WINEDLLOVERRIDES="mscoree="

Combobox - list shall not close when a key is pressed. It should put selection
to the first entry of the list starting by this letter (then moving to the
next, etc...) but NOT automatically close the list
Fix : in COMBO_WindowProc, if list is dropped (CBF_DROPPED) and a key is
pressed, then the "no roll up" (CBF_NOROLLUP) shall be set
case WM_CHAR:
case WM_IME_CHAR:
{
HWND hwndTarget;
/* This is the fix */
if (lphc->wState & CBF_DROPPED)
lphc->wState |= CBF_NOROLLUP;
/* End of the fix */
if ( lphc->wState & CBF_EDIT )
hwndTarget = lphc->hWndEdit;
else
hwndTarget = lphc->hWndLBox;
return SendMessageW(hwndTarget, message, wParam, lParam);

Video
The game in question is Halo: Reach and is part of The Master Chief Collection
installed via Steam.
Weapons fire often has unusual boxes around it. Sometimes they're transparent
(but visible) and sometimes they're all black. I've only noticed it on Covenant
weapons fire (lasers, etc) but haven't played for long.
I haven't found a PC demo of the game, but I'll test it if I do.
I note Bug 55320 but have no idea if it's related.
Same issue on Proton (with PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 because it doesn't work with
dxvk).
To get Steam working needs arial (Bug 32342).

Screenshot
Halo: The Master Chief Collection from Steam will not launch if Easy Anti Cheat
is enabled and reports "Launcher Error" and "Unexpected Error (#1)". The game
has an option to launch without it and it works fine.
With EAC disabled online multiplayer is not possible.
The game launches correctly with Proton Experimental and Hotfix (I've not
tested others).
I doubt there's a demo available for this anywhere, though I think it is
available directly through the Microsoft Store, so maybe.
