He found in /var/lib/binfmts a file named "wine". Its content was (for me) the following (without -------):
----------------------- wine1.0 magic 0 MZ
/usr/bin/wine ----------------------- I moved the file elsewhere and a new wine 1.2 installation worked smoothly.
