It was added by c594bca17. That's not particularly helpful, but I suspect it's
not about gzip specifically as about avoiding BSD in general.

If the script works on BSD (with Damjan's patches) there's probably no reason
to worry about it. Although, frankly, I kind of would rather get rid of that
script entirely and just require git.
