yes this did it. under ubuntu hardy setting System->Preferences->Appearance->Visual Effects->None caused two compiz processes to stop (a third one still runs, 'compiz-decorator' but no harm) and What Watch to start and run proper.
Then it's a cpmiz bug. It conflicts with Wine. This bug is a wontfix.
