Well, no. The proprietary NVIDIA driver generally has better performance than Mesa, but for many things Nouveau is perfectly adequate
As a person with NVidia hardware and a need to regularly run 'make test' for the whole Wine tree including ddraw/d3d* directories I'd say that Nouveau is very far from being adequate even with latest Linux kernels. Disabling a bunch of directories just to avoid constant crashes inside of Nouveau can't be adequate, not mentioning that running a moderate, not d3d centric application with some translucency/layered windows makes the whole system sluggish and forces the video card fun constantly rotate. Nouveau may be adequate for a simple set of office applications, but that's it.
Sorry for off-topic, but that's really a pain to work with such a PoS.
