minor partial revert

That is unfortunate, I can always reproduce with Intel graphics and "Gallium
0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 3.5, 128 bits)".

After trying to revert parts of the commit I found that the attached minor
revert fixes the issue for me, if someone can test on OSX it would be good. I
double checked it in Linux.
