Ok, my problem with the fresh installs was that i was updating them all to
version 1.2 before testing, i just redid a fresh install testing every step of
the way.

Version 1.0 works with our without a no-cd patch.

Version 1.2 does not work with or without a no-cd patch.

thats probably what was causing all the confusion.
