[Bug 9983] Half-Life 2, Counter Strike Source and other games crash at startup

I've recently tried compiling versions 0.9.46, 0.9.48, 0.9.50, 0.9.55, and
latest git head and had crashes on all these versions.

For me the crash seems to come just as the 3d menu is being drawn; if I start
with -console, the console will begin to be drawn, but the crashes.

I'm running x86_64 arch; nvidia Quadro NVS 130M video card w/ nvidia
proprietary drivers.

If you need someone to help test patches or debug, let me know.
