The symptoms sound like bug 23442, which was eventually closed as a duplicate of bug 17273. That bug only affects Firefox 3.6.6 and later, and would explain why you thought it used to work in older Wine.
Firefox 3.5.6 in Wine 1.3.9 has no problem with the Adobe web page cited.
