The problem is in the sound, possibly by the pulsesound sound drivers. In the configuration deactivate the sound and the game runs well, I never had a problem again.
The crashes are probably caused by the game running out of virtual memory. Pulseaudio is known to use a lot of memory by default, see bug 39477 comment 12 for a possible workaround.
