I've had the same problem. I've gone to this site ( https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RadeonDriver ) and followed the instructions to remove fglrx and install the open source driver.
Guild wars starts to 'work' again, unfortunately my card is only marginally supported by it so is unplayable. So its definitely fglrx related :-)
I know it's fglrx related, probably the same issue as this bug (posted by me) http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12929 but it seems that no one's too much interested in fixing it because nVidia users don't have any problem and they think that preventing all ATI/fglrx users to use D3D is not a so big problem... or at least this has been my impression...
