Furthermore, the arrow issue only happens if, after selecting the arrow tool, you hover the mouse over a text box. In a blank slide it works fine.

I have tested this 1.1.24 both with and without the mentioned patch. The patch does remove the fixme: notice, but does not solve the issue.
Possibly of note: when the document goes black, there is a blue title bar at the top of it, as if the entire black area is actually a window (or a subwindow) that is supposed to be transparent but is not. Supporting this theory is the fact that, if you use KDE and have compositing and transparency enabled, the bug still occurs, but the black (sub)window is partially transparent, allowing you to still see the document underneath.
