--- Comment #2 from Fred f.v.j@hotmail.fr 2010-02-09 04:19:59 --- For those who don't want (or can't) use a no-cd patch (as I was not able to find a german Pharaoh + Kleopatra + 2.1 Patch working for me), you have to know a few things:
- Find what kind of copy protection is used: the tool ProtectionID is very good at it and works even with Wine... Here there's a mix of SecuROM and SafeDisc, and that the last which causes problems!
- Once you know that, find how it works: this Wine SafeDisc FAQs (http://www.winehq.org/pipermail/wine-users/2002-April/007910.html) was very useful, especially the 4th part of "How does SafeDisc 1 work ?". It explains why you have to choose a NT mode to play those games...
- So NEVER chose w95, 98 or ME or you will get this annoying "CD not found" pop-up window!!! Use instead w2k, it's working good for me...
- MOUNT the CD or it will not be found, but without warning this time!
- Start the game from ~/.wine/drive_c/SIERRA/Pharaoh/ directly and be ready to try until it start! Sometimes you need to do it 2 or 3 times, sometimes even more, but it's always starting in my case, sooner or later =;)
That's it, enjoy the game!
A last thing: there's a bug with some of this old games when you got a 24 bit color default depth with X (which is standard today) so you have to go 16 bit or stick to Wine 1.1.30, which is the last one not affected by it... Or you can offer your help to the Wine devs if you're able to, 'cause they're working on it (http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=20380).
