As a follow-up, I've tried again with PlayOnLinux with Wine 1.9.4-staging and
followed Daniel Joyce's steps exactly.

Having an emulated desktop _really_ helps! The startup time of 64-bit ZBrush is
now about the same as Windows, maybe slightly slower but not by much! I've not
dared to try 2.1 quite yet as it is working fine now but I will try eventually.
My Intuos works well with pressure sensitivity also.

I've been running (K)Ubuntu 16.04 64-bit as well this time around.
