I do allow the window manager to control the windows - as I recall, I was having problems with keyboard focus until I turned that on, ages ago.
The corruption consists of a kind of green-and-blue checkerboard effect in the background, sometimes with the Graphics Settings window in TF2 displayed on top of it.
In addition, I managed to crash X just now by trying wine-1.1.6-255-g9898d43 with -dxlevel 95 (it seemed to be working - screen resolution change was successful - but alt-tabbing out of TF2 and back again resulted in an X crash. Since I never have keyboard focus (this has always been a problem with TF2 in wine for me, back as far as I've played it) in TF2 until I alt-tab out and in again, this is sort of a problem.).
