I'm told there are a bunch of patches for hardware cursor lying around.  I could
only find this one made by Andrew Riedi:

Is this any closer to acceptable?

Btw, I'll test both patches (the good one and the hackish one) and report. 
Also, a friend of mine can do much better betatesting (i.e. actual gameplay) of
them against Conquista
