There is no real reason to do so but as presence of the font links is easy to check and gives assurance that complex script rendering should work some programs might choose to read the registry rather than looking up font glyphs.
I am not sure any software actually does that but it kind of makes sense if the application cares about rendering correctly. Most actually don't, though.
