As I recall it, the installer didn't copy the directory on Windows either so to increase performance (and remove the need for having the CD in the drive) you had to do it yourself. But if the directory was copied without removing the read-only attribute on both directory and files, this behavior was also seen.
Maybe this should be marked as an original misfeature and just included in an installation FAQ?
Well, it's been forever since the last time I tried installing this game on a Windows machine, so I may be losing my memory, but I don't recall ever having this sort of problem back then. (And the game does still hit the CD on Wine, even after copying over the map files.) Something odd must be going on somewhere.
But yeah, I agree that it's a minor enough hurdle that pretty much any user should be able to deal with it. (I've already put a note in the Crossover Tips&Tricks file for the game...)
