Under no circumstances shall an encapsulated application (via an emulator) damage or modify its host. This is what Wine does all the time. An excessively annoying behaviour.
Wine Is Not an Emulator. It's not a virtual machine either - it's a translation layer for Win32 API.
IMO this bug should be resolved this way: upon discovering new associations, Wine should show a configuration window where you can selectively propagate these associations to your Linux host. If I'm not mistaken CrossOver Office already behaves this way.
