Further tests with Wine 1.7. No changes, program goes on line to activate OK and activation is acknowledged, but then it crashes.

I think perhaps you misunderstood Mr. Cooper, or missed his typo correction in Comment #3. This is not a regression in Wine. Previous versions of the Electric Quilt application (EQ5 and EQ6) work with both Wine 1.6 and Wine 1.7, but the most recent version of the application (EQ7) does not work with any version of Wine. Thus, I don't think a regression test would reveal anything.
My wife is also a quilter, and this application is the only thing preventing me from completely expunging Windows from my home. Electric Quilt's licensing/activation/phoning home policies and implementations irritate me even more than Microsoft, but unfortunately, their product does not appear to have any real competition.
