I don't know if "hard lock" is the right term. The hard drive was running constantly and the mouse behaving poorly, but the 2nd time it responded to killing X. I suspect it just ran up the memory through the roof, started swapping, and never stopped.
I'm using an nvidia card using the nvidia drivers.
