Another workaround (besides virtual desktop) is to simply start X in 16 bit per pixel mode, then it looks pretty good, only a few cosmetic problems (e.g. some buttons partially obscured).
Responsiveness is much better.
The two remaining problems are not X driver problems, so I'm marking this bug closed and opening up two new ones:
