I was about to test this, but the problem
seems to have vanished on my system.

(Actually, I did test it, found the problem gone,
then reverted your two patches just to be sure--
and found the problem still gone.)

So, utter mystery.  Can you confirm that reverting
your patches makes the problem reappear on your system?
