For the time being I have found that wine 1.4.1 doesn't exhibit the problem and appears to play ok. All versions of 1.5.x and 1.6 seem to give me the r2d2 effect on my Lenovo X1 Carbon even though everything else works perfectly.
If there is anything I can do to help debug the issue I would be happy to help.
