That is why this bug depends on it--you have to get past that bug to get to this one. As to whether the workaround could be what's causing the problem you reported, that I don't know, which is why I haven't actually marked this as invalid, but merely raised the question. Someone with greater knowledge than I needs to make that call.
As for PlayOnLinux, while I understand they are trying to clean up their act, they have a history of using patched versions of Wine without letting the user know. Users of distro packages with unapproved patches are also told to retest in plain Wine. The best practice is to test in plain Wine compiled from current git, as that will also confirm that the problem hasn't already been fixed.
