In case this is useful to anyone running into this, it looks like the application stores the depth-buffer format in %windir%\d3dx.dat. Deleting/moving that file allows the application to start again, after which d3dx.dat is recreated.
Oh! Very useful indeed (I still never got to tracking it down). I think I'll add a note about that in the AppDB entry.
