Yes, the patch works.
So:
1) there are other Arphic kai derivatives out there (and filtering by name is probably not effective); and also the Arphic kai font was the first commercial quality chinese font released under an open license, so it is extremely popular and most linux boxes comes with it optional.
2) might worth telling the Xorg people? (I believe they are the one who created it?) apparently http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/CJKUnifonts is the official URL.
1) the font issue wiki page needs to be updated for non-unbuntu and a different ukai releases - it looks like I have the latest already, and the wiki page never explained which direction one should go (it seems to suggest that it is a ubuntu customization which broke the font, rather than whatever); whereas I have a redhat variant of the latest ukai release.
