It appears that 0eb19126e5c0efe7e5e0cbd4811c19523601973a is the first bad commit. I would like to add that rectangle selection sometimes works(like 20% of the time).
I also have this problem. It seems to only show the rectangle when one moves the mouse in the opposite direction from which it was moving.
