complete the mission, and it seems that if I don't have a sufficient delay between loading the game and WC3 trying to load a movie, I get the crash.
Trying to load a movie? I thought this happened at the end of the first human mission right after you kill the boss raider? No cinematic movies play after that.
After my units kill the slave master (the orc boss), there's a quick cut-scene with the villagers and Prince Fabio (I mean Arthas).
I don't know if movie playback is now supported in Warcraft III, you should rename the movie directory to disable the cut scenes.
mv Movies Movies.bak
When you want to watch the cut scenes, you might use mplayer or xine. see also http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=3126&iT... "After installing the game, its highly recommended that you browse to your Warcraft III folder..."

I forgot to add: because my screen res is 1280x800, I need to emulate a virtual desktop in wine to run WC3, otherwise the image is garbled. (Incidentally, if anyone knows a way around this, I'd love to hear it.)
Do you have the game set up to use exactly that resolution and nothing else?
There is no 1280x800 resolution available in WC3, so I use 1024x768, and that's the size my virtual desktop is set to.
You should use -opengl. Is the check box 'fullscreen' is ticked into Warcraft III video options ?
About your garbled image, I have experienced a bug with the textures each time I minimize/switch (alt-tab) the Warcraft III game. There is a workaround fix to prevent the window to be minimized. http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13547
