winetricks is a tool to install applications and Windows components inside a wine prefix. If no wine prefix is selected while installing components it will install to the default prefix, which is located inside your home folder at ~/.wine
PlayOnLinux is a tool to help run different versions of Wine and simplify managing different wine prefixes.
So you say you updated Wine, you mean you used a package from your GNU/Linux distribution to upgrade wine, or you mean you used PlayOnLinux to install new Wine versions inside POL?
When you say "separate wine" I guess you are talking about a wine prefix from inside POL and your standard prefix at ~/.wine, right?
winetricks alone can't do anything, so the part where "winetricks took over" makes no sense until now.
