I just tried using 'pasuspender' to no avail. I am using PulseAudio on Mandriva 2010. (Kernel 2.6.31.6 Wine 1.1.36 fglrx 8.68.2/9.12) And since 2009, it copes well with Wine set to OSS.
Other games like 'Homeworld: Cataclysm' and 'F.E.A.R.' don't seem to have this problem at all. (Wine+OSS -> PulseAudio)
Steam games maybe expect lower-level access for sound???
