I'm sorry, I can select DirectDraw HAL with Wine D3D7 HAL/RGB/T&L HAL only. With this I get many rendering problems (black figures, a black square behind the mouse, white grassland, etc..). I think I open a own bug for this. But I cannot test the bug since this problem holds.
The transparency problem is known: http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=201 Apparently some people see it, some don't and there has been a patch but obviously it didn't fix the problem completely.
The z-order problem is much worse IMO. I will download and try the demo.
